Seven Sport

Only watched the last 4 today but it looks like no presentation was shown and only a brief mounting yard preview with the exception of the Cup itself. No sponsor on the clock either.

VRC chairwoman Amanda Elliott (is that 3AW radio’s Tom Elliott’s mother btw?) said to Bruce this morning that a new major sponsor will be announced for next year and beyond, as well as potential for 24 horses in the Cup (negotiating with TABCorp) and the brand new grand stand.

So things are changing at Seven and VRC for Melbourne Cup it seems.

2018 will be huge.

Hopefully you get a job in sevens Melbourne based publicity department. Your posts read like media releases for seven.

  1. I was talking about changes to the Melbourne Cup, both with the VRC and Seven.

  2. I don’t work or every want to work in media, it’s a hobby and joy to follow. Thanks.

No, Tom’s mother is the late state MP Lorraine Elliot, although Amanda is another former wife of Tom’s dad John.

Australian Open

Australia’s top ranked golfer and former world no. 1 Jason Day, along with reigning title holder Jordan Spieth, lead a star-studded Australian Open field vying for the prestigious Stonehaven Cup at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney next Thursday.

Former winners including Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Chalmers, Robert Allenby, 2015 winner Matt Jones and crowd favourite Craig Parry headline eight past champions set to light up the fairways.

The Australian Open is also a chance for players to secure a place in golf’s most international championships, the British Open. The leading three players, who finish in the top 10 and ties who are not already exempt, will qualify for the 2018 British Open.

Seven’s golf coverage will be streamed on the 7Live app, with coverage of the Australian Open and Australian PGA on mobile giving Australians access anywhere, anytime on any device.

In addition to the all-day coverage on the 7Live app, 7Sport will be following the action throughout the day @7Golf and @7Sport on Twitter.

The Australian Open will be hosted by Pat Welsh, with expert commentary from Wayne Grady, Grant Dodd and Ewan Porter. Todd Woodbridge and Alison Whitaker will bring fairway commentary, and Bree Laughlin will report on all the colour and post round interviews.

So clearly Peter Donegan has fallen out with Seven or they’ve decided on a new direction?

That’s bad. “Whispering” Pat Welsh needs to be on the fairways and greens with the big headphones doing the super quiet commentary. That is his expertise.

Seven Secures Magic Millions

The Seven Network has today announced that it will extend live coverage of the $10 million Magic Millions Raceday for a further three years, taking it through to January 2020 (inclusive).

Seven Group Holdings Executive Chairman, Kerry Stokes AO and Chief Executive Ryan Stokes, in conjunction with Seven West Media Managing Director, Tim Worner made the joint announcement with Magic Millions
co-owners Gerry Harvey and Katie Page-Harvey at the official launch of the 2018 Magic Millions Carnival on the Gold Coast today.

“Gerry and Katie have built something special with Magic Millions that has a unique offering on the Australian and international horse-racing calendars,” said Kurt Burnette, Chief Revenue Officer, Seven West Media.

“The Magic Millions Raceday is an enormously popular fixture on Seven’s racing schedule and this long-term partnership demonstrates our commitment to Katie and Gerry’s vision to grow and evolve the event every year. There is nothing else quite like it in Australia - if not the world. What happens on the Gold Coast in January sets the tone for racing in Australia for the rest of the year,” Mr Burnette said.

Commenting, Saul Shtein, Seven’s Head of Sport, said: “Showing their extraordinary flair for innovation,
Katie and Gerry have created 10 days of events that are a must attend for everybody in the racing industry and,
as importantly, the broader public – this includes first time racegoers all the way through to established international connections. Magic Millions Raceday always caps off a remarkable Carnival and we are pleased to announce the Seven Network’s commitment to broadcast the day in full for the next three years.”

Ms Page-Harvey said Seven’s live coverage of Raceday, which began in 2015, has been instrumental to the growth in popularity and presence of the Magic Millions.

“Our turnover from Magic Millions January Yearling Sales has more than doubled over the past five years – growing from $70 million in 2013 to $145 million at last year’s sales. Winx, Redzel, Capitalist and Buffering are all Magic Millions graduates. In many instances these future superstars are revealed at the Magic Millions Raceday in January. It is where those who love racing go to witness or purchase the next big names in racing,”
Ms Page-Harvey said.

"Magic Millions was the first raceday in Australia to offer $10 Million in prizemoney on a single raceday. Our aim is to continually set the bar higher and the partnership with Seven ensures the standard of the Raceday broadcast is world-class.

"The line-up of racing talent that Seven brings to the Gold Coast is extraordinary - with Richard Freedman and
Jason Richardson set to join our Magic Millions Ambassadors Francesca Cumani, Hamish McLachlan and Amanda Abate we know that Magic Millions Raceday will be showcased at its absolute best.”

Chief Executive of Tourism & Events Queensland, Leanne Coddington, says Seven’s commitment to Magic Millions Race Day presents a great opportunity for the national spotlight to shine on the Gold Coast.

“The Magic Millions Raceday is the highlight of the annual Magic Millions Carnival and one of Queensland’s premier racing event experiences,” Ms Coddington said.

“Seven’s announcement means the event experience and vision of the beautiful Gold Coast will be shared with racegoers as well as viewers nationwide.

“The Magic Millions Carnival is just one of many stellar Gold Coast events featured on the It’s Live in Queensland events calendar for 2018, which is forecast to generate more than $780 million for the state’s economy next year.”

Bruce McAvaney was recognised with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the South Australia Press Club Media Awards last Friday night.

Is that for work in/for South Australia specifically? Or in general?

Because majority of telecasts Bruce is involved in, are outside of South Australia.

Though the state would like everyone to know he is from and lives there

Would that be in Victoria?

What I was getting at was, I thought such awards ceremonies were to recognise a media person from that state?

Though seems to be less and less the way these days.

Considering it’s a lifetime achievement award I’d consider his body of work was recognised. Anyhow, he’s a national figure, so still seen in SA regardless of where he is broadcasting .

I know that Melbourne/Adelaide probably would’ve been able to see HD coverage last year. But unless there were any 1080i broadcasts back in 2007-09, this year’s Australian Open golf telecast is probably the first that Sydney (home of where the tournament is being held, no less!), Brisbane and Perth viewers have ever been able to watch in native HD?

Anyway…for what they’re worth, some screencaptures from the start of the broadcast to give people an idea of the commentators/presenters/graphics and the HD for the benefit of those in areas which still can’t watch main channel content from Seven in 1080i:

And as a bonus, caps of the Sponsor Billboard:

At least they have a simulcast of it this year. Couldn’t imagine a worse situation (i.e. 7Bogan in HD)

Those golf graphics are horrific.

Alos, Helvetica really needs to be banned from all forms of graphic design.
