Ian Thorpe and Leisel Jones join Seven

Channel Seven today announced five-time Olympic gold medallist, Ian Thorpe and three-time gold medal winner Leisel Jones will be part of the commentary team for the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary this month.
Thorpe is Australia’s greatest Olympian, having won the most gold medals of any Aussie athlete. At age 15, he became the youngest male world champion when he won gold in the 400-metre freestyle at the World Championships – an event he went on to win 10 more gold medals at, the third highest of any swimmer.

Leisel Jones is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest breaststrokers. Jones boasts a successful swimming career as the first Australian swimmer to compete at four Summer Olympic games where she has won a total of nine medals.
Seven will broadcast The World Swimming Championships live and exclusive on 7TWO and PLUS7 from July 23 when the country’s top

Basil Zempilas will not fly to Budapest as his wife, Amy has recently given birth to his third child last Monday. I think he will have to spend extra time to look after his family in Perth.

Strange that baz said on Twitter the other day he would still be covering the world Swimming Championship

As long as somebody does

Or, god forbid, the Masterchef kitchen isn’t in the building used for exterior shots :scream:

Isn’t it?

According to TV Week, the swimming competition of FINA World Championships starts on 7TWO this Sunday (July 23) at 5.30pm AEST with the heats. The evening session will be shown live at around 1.30am AEST. It will then be repeated at 3.30pm AEST leading into the next day’s heats. On Friday in Melbourne and Adelaide, the heats coverage will start on 7TWO but finish on 7mate due to Better Homes and Gardens.

It is one and the same building: the Centenary Hall at Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

Heck, you can even go inside and check out the set during the Royal Melbourne Show.

I’ve been enjoying some live FINA World Championship diving via the IOC’s Olympic Channel during the past half hour. I’m wondering if Seven has any plans to introduce a localised version of the service to their suite of channels to maintain interest in Olympic events between the Summer and Winter games? NBC launched the USA’s version of the channel this month. Considering Seven has stitched up the rights to all Summer and Winter games until Tokyo 2020, it could be in their interests to launch the channel here.

###World Swimming Championships

From Sunday 23 July

The big names of Australian swimming, including Mack Horton, Cameron McEvoy, Mitch Larkin, Bronte Campbell and Emily Seebohm line up behind the blocks to compete for gold against the world’s top competitors in the FINA World Swimming Championships.

Mack Horton, Olympic gold medallist and World Championship medallist faces rival Sun Yang for the first time since their controversial Olympic showdown on day one of the Worlds in the 400m freestyle. Earlier this year, Horton had a stunning run at Australian Swimming Championships, taking out the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle – following in the footsteps of Grant Hackett’s success from 2008.

Our top ranked 100m freestyler Cameron McEvoy is in search of his first world title in Budapest after he snatched his fourth national title in April. Our resident backstroke legend, Mitch Larkin will be aiming to defend his 100m and 200m titles from the last worlds meet.

Veteran backstoker Emily Seebohm is representing Australia for the sixth time at the World Championships following her 21st national title claim in April. Seebohm won three golds at the Worlds in Kazan two years ago and will this year battle to again bring home the gold. Bronte Campbell earned her first national title in the 50m and 100m freestyle and is the reigning World Champion in the same events and will compete to defend her titles.

Jason Richardson hosts Seven’s coverage with Basil Zempilas leading the call alongside three- time Olympic gold medallist Leisel Jones and Australia’s greatest Olympian Ian Thorpe with guest expert Cate Campbell. Alex Hart will be reporting poolside bringing viewers the latest insights and interviews from the competition.
