Historic ANZAC Day clash headlines mega weekend of sport on Seven
AFL, Racing and World Surf League on Seven and 7plus
Australians will be treated to a mega weekend of sport action on the Seven Network, headlined by the annual ANZAC Day AFL match between Essendon and Collingwood live from the hallowed MCG. Kicking off from 2pm AEST on Monday, Seven will broadcast a full pre-game ceremony live and free, including the traditional ANZAC Day moment of silence in front of a packed MCG crowd.
The footy action kicks off tonight when Andy, Mick and Sam assume their usual positions at The Front Bar , alongside special guests Richmond Football Club President, Peggy O’Neal and former Port Adelaide and Melbourne player, Jack Watts, from 8.30pm AEST on Seven and 7plus.
Football’s #1 commentary team will deliver all the action live from stadia around the country this weekend, kicking off with Friday Night Footy in Canberra between the GWS Giants and St Kilda from 7.30pm AEST on Seven. Fans can tune into 7mate and 7plus, for the Friday Night Countdown pre-game show with Matthew Richardson from 7.00pm AEST, and post-match for the Armchair Experts with Adam Cooney, Georgie Parker and Campbell Brown from 11.00pm AEST.
Rounding out this week’s AFL matches on Seven are:
- Fremantle v Carlton at Optus Stadium on Saturday from 7.00pm AEST on Channel 7 and 7mate
- Richmond v Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday from 7.00pm on Channel 7 and 7mate
Winter Racing begins on Seven on Saturday, with five hours of thoroughbred racing live from Royal Randwick, Morphettville and Caulfield from 12.00pm AEST. Then, Seven will bring fans all the action live from Optus Stadium when Fremantle take on Carlton, from 7.00pm AEST.
Following on from last week’s excitement at Bells Beach, the World Surf League Championship Tour arrives at Margaret River from Sunday afternoon, with all events streamed live and free on 7plus. With men’s and women’s events expected to continue until Wednesday, fans can catch every wave of the Margaret River Pro as it happens on 7plus.
State league footy is back on Seven this Sunday, kicking off with Richmond v Casey for Round Five of the VFL from 12.00pm AEST. South Australian fans can watch Norwood take on West Adelaide in Round Four of the SANFL from 2.00pm ACST, before Peel Thunder host West Perth in the WAFL from 2.00pm AWST. State league footy fans can watch their dedicated home-state match live on Channel 7, while all the VFL, SANFL and WAFL action is available live and free on 7plus, nationally.

Seven gets behind the Australian Dolphins
2022 Para Swimming Championships live on 7plus

The Seven Network is giving para-sport fans the chance to get behind the Australian Dolphins when the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships in Portugal is broadcast live and free from this weekend on 7plus.
Seven has extended its valued partnership with Paralympics Australia in a deal that will see the Dolphins – including Tokyo 2020 gold medalists Rowan Crothers, Lakeisha Patterson, Will Martin and Rachael Watson – compete against the global elite of para-swimming over seven days in Madeira.
It will be the second time Seven has shown the World Para Swimming Championships after it became the first Australian commercial network to screen the event when it was held in London in 2019.
Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin said: “Ahead of the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games, we know that Australians are counting down the days to watch our beloved Aussies in the pool. There is no better way to gear up for the Commonwealth Games than the World Para Swimming Championships.
“Australians embraced our incredible Paralympians during Tokyo 2020 and now we can unashamedly get behind them yet again as they take on the rest of the world in Portugal.
“The best place to witness all the action of the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships is right here on Seven, Your Home of Sport,” he said.
The World Para Swimming Championships will be streamed live on 7plus, including a daily highlights show re-capping the best moments of the day, from 9.00am AEST each morning. Competition runs from June 12 to 18. Australia’s squad of 21 includes 19 swimmers who competed at Tokyo 2020.

It was announced today that the women’s Tour Down Under has secured UCI WorldTour status for the first time, and would open the 2023 Tour in January 14 next year.
The 2021 and 2022 editions were replaced by the Santos Festival of Cycling due to border closures caused by COVID.

Legendary broadcaster joins TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame
Seven West Media is proud to congratulate Bruce McAvaney OAM on his induction into the TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame last night.
The most recognised, respected and loved sport commentator in Australia, Bruce started his television career at Seven News in Adelaide in 1978 and went on to present many high-profile sports throughout his career, including AFL, horse racing, athletics, motor racing, tennis, golf, and Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
The legendary broadcaster is synonymous with major sporting events, including the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup, Australian Open tennis, Test cricket and the Summer Olympic Games, covering every Olympiad from Moscow 1980 through to Tokyo 2020, with the exception of the 2012 Games.
Seven West Media Chairman, Kerry Stokes AC, said: “For generations, the Logies have honoured the best in our business – people who have entertained and informed Australians their entire lives.
“Bruce McAvaney is one of those. His sense of timing, combined with the right words and expert knowledge, are impeccable.
“His call of Cathy Freeman in Sydney 2000 is already immortalised. And yet in 2005, when Makybe Diva came back to scale after winning her third Melbourne Cup, he simply said nothing and let the pictures speak for themselves. That’s what makes him stand out. It’s not about him.
“But for all the things he’s done, there is one quality I cherish more than anything. Bruce McAvaney is a great bloke. Always has been, always will be,” added Mr Stokes.
Bruce said: “We don’t get many chances to reflect on our working life. It’s always a matter of planning for the next big sporting event, always looking forward. But something like this makes you look back. And the overwhelming emotion is feeling you’re not worthy. You’ve been the recipient of incredible opportunities which have taken you into people’s lounge rooms. And supported by teams of specialists whose job is to make you look and sound good. I’m a passionate sports lover, of stats and stories, and so are many other people and I think it’s a measure of what sport means to Australians to have been awarded this honour.”
Seven West Media Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton, said: “The TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame award is a richly deserved honour for Bruce, and we couldn’t be happier for him.
“Bruce has been part of the fabric of Australian sport – and of Seven – for more than four decades. His extraordinary knowledge, passion, dedication and professionalism are legendary and inspiring, and he has been a wonderful mentor for many people at Seven. Congratulations Bruce. What a moment, what a legend!”

He is a great colleague and a great mate. We’ve had a lot of fun and laughs together and shared some incredible successes. The TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame achievement joins a long list of honours Bruce has received over the years, including the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2002 for service to sports broadcasting and to the community through charitable and sporting organisations; induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame (also in 2002); the International Olympic Committee Media Award in 1989; the inaugural TV Week Logie Award for Most Outstanding Sport Broadcaster in 1999; and the Melbourne Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

The Australian reports Seven is suing Gravity Media in the Supreme Court, in order to access Olympic broadcast software developed for it. Seven is claiming it owns intellectual property rights to the software. Gravity Media assisted in production of Seven’s coverage of Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics last year, and Beijing Winter Olympics earlier this year. Sources say Gravity Media’s refusal to provide the requested system is in retaliation for Seven awarding the Commonwealth Games contract to competitor NEP, which produces AFL and cricket for Seven and Fox Sports.
