Which Monday (tee hee)
I don’t think I can get excited for another relaunch after preparing and putting away all the lights each time. I can’t handle this emotional rollercoaster they have put me on. Just bring back “Southern Cross Nightly News. First at Six.”
Why not Tas TV News? Or TNT 9 News? ![]()
Or just TNT News with the tagline - for news that’s explosive.
7 Nightly Southern Cross News at 6 on TNT9 on LCN6
Where have the OSGs gone from 7Tas News? They haven’t had any for days, if not weeks!
Not sure if this news has been posted before.
Peter’s last day presenting weather is next Monday, September 22.
Surely longest serving weather presenter in the country? Or even longest serving presenter on any bulletin?
I think he may be. Outlasted Ray Dinneen at NBN.
He’s nothing more than a true Tasmanian TV icon. He will be missed by the many Tasmanians who tune in to watch his weather forecasts.
I wish him all the very best for his retirement, he’s definitely earned it. ![]()
I knew this day was going to be coming soon but I didn’t know this soon!
It’s a big loss for Tasmania, I know it sounds ridiculous but he was more than the weather presenter as he was also the voice of Southern Cross for a long time as well and just the way he always managed to inject that extra humour into the bulletins or the jabs he’d have with Jo and Kim etc… was great.
I’ve loved that he’s also had a bit of time being the newsreader and being in the big chair the last couple of years too. A pretty impressive career and hopefully now that Tas is part of the 7 News empire there might be a little nod to the career if he is indeed longest serving at a national level.
I do think, with 7 taking control, they’d have been better to use a journo as weather presenter who can get out on location a bit more. Kiah is just a bit generic. They’ll never match Murph’s character, but someone could really put their stamp on it.
Peter Murphy to retire as Australia’s longest-serving commercial TV weather presenter
Departing 7NEWS Tasmania after a four-decade run
Tasmanians will farewell a familiar and much-loved face on Monday, 22 September, when Peter “Murph” Murphy presents his final weather report on 7NEWS Tasmania, marking the close of an extraordinary career in Australian television.
Murph’s calm presence and warm personality have made him a nightly fixture for Tasmanian audiences for more than 41 years, giving him the record as the longest-serving commercial TV weather presenter in Australia.
Respected for his clear and reliable forecasts, Murph has also brought humour and heart to the role – from his cheeky one-liners to the unmistakable warmth of his on-air partnership with news anchor Kim Millar.
Murph began his broadcasting career in radio in his hometown of Moree before moving to Tasmania in 1982 to join 7EX. Two years later, he was fronting the weather on TNT9. Around the same time, he met Donna Howard. They married in 1992 and welcomed two sons, Jack and Lewis, and so far, two granddaughters.
Beyond the studio, Murph has been deeply involved in the Tasmanian community. As a master of ceremonies, he has hosted countless major community events from New Year’s Eve gatherings to festivals, Cup days around the state and many awards nights, sporting lunches and dinners.
A lifelong Sydney Swans fan and former nightclub DJ, Murph has always found ways to connect with people from all walks of life.
Reflecting on his career, Murph said: “It’s been an incredible privilege to be part of Tasmanians’ lives every night. Weather is such a big part of this community, and I’ve always tried to respect that while sneaking in a little fun along the way. Tasmania’s weather is unpredictable, the job has been unforgettable and the people have made it all worthwhile.
“Being part of such a strong performing news team over so many years has been especially rewarding. An award of some sort should also be bestowed upon Kim Millar and Jo Palmer for their ability to have withstood so much over the years.
“My wife Donna, of course, has been along for the entire period as well and no doubt is looking forward to spending every waking moment of every day with me from now on,” he said.
Seven’s Director of News in Tasmania, Gavin McDougall, said Murph’s contribution to the state’s news and broadcasting is immeasurable.
“Peter Murphy is more than a weather presenter – he’s part of the fabric of Tasmanian life. His commitment, professionalism and connection with viewers have set an extremely high standard,” he said.
“His departure marks the end of an incredible chapter in our television history. Peter leaves behind a remarkable legacy in regional television – one of consistency, credibility, and community connection.”
Continuing Murph’s legacy of trusted forecasting for Tasmanian viewers will be current weekend weather presenter Kiah Wicks, who’ll be stepping into the weekday role.
Kiah said: “This has been a dream of mine since I was a girl. I am so excited to be joining Kim Millar and the rest of the weekday team. It’s hard to replace the legend that is Murph, but I’ll be bringing my own brand of weather smarts to the job.”
Murph’s farewell will be broadcast Monday, 22 September at 6.00pm on 7NEWS Tasmania, featuring a special tribute to his remarkable contribution to Tasmanian television.
7NEWS Tasmania Nightly at 6.00pm on Seven and 7plus
Peter Hitchener has been presenting on either weeknights or weekends at GTV for 46 years - 5 more than Murph.
Brain Henderson was also in the chair for 46 years
Either way, 41 years at the same station, especially in what is technically a regional market, is still a great achievement
If only @Techster was still in Tassie ![]()
Maybe Murph can claim longest in one role! haha
I’d say this sort of spells the end of wacky weathermen in the evening too?
I think that title may go to Brian Henderson, but Murph can probably claim the title for longest serving weather presenter.
Unless they go out of their way to find someone to fill that role, probably easier to get one of the jurno’s to do it.
Hopefully despite leaving the station, Murph may appear back in the newsreader’s chair from time to time if he wants to come back every now and then.
He went from weekends to weeknights too I understand, not sure how long he was in the main chair for, he also retired over 20 years ago and then subsequently died, so he’s certainly not working anymore.

A bit strange to see it referred to as “7NEWS Tasmania” in TV guides, social media, 7plus, and even in a Sunrise report… except for actually on the air during the news!

100% agree - don’t need to see me in the weather role. ![]()
Didn’t realise he’s a fellow New South Welshman.
