Seven News (Regional Vic/NSW/ACT/WA)

Does anyone know if Seven have started news updates for Midura?

It should have been a requirement of the Seven takeover of Prime - as it was a trigger event in that market for an obligation to actually produce local content for the market.

Be interesting to hear from someone in Mildura.

I was in Mildura early in the year. They currently produce local weather updates. Not sure about news.

the Shepparton transmitter at Mt Major is on the opposite side of Bendigo, Mt Major is 90km as the crow flies from Albury’s transmitter at Mt Baranduda. That is why SCA retransmits its GLV8 Albury signal on UHF at Mt Major, and that is why Shepp got lumped in to their Border North East bulletin.

I understand that but Mt Major(was up at Mt Major Last week and lived in the Shepparton Area) has got an advantage to line of sight to Mt Alexander(I tested it on other Radio bands as well as Mount Baranduda and got fantastic reach to the Western Area. however More people in Shepparton catchment area go to Bendigo for any major services(Health and other Logistics) needs than Albury/Wodonga.

Win or GLV8 made a big mistake regarding the Border North East News. I know companies in Shepparton and West of Shepparton that have pulled Adverisiting from the Channel because of this.

Even the Bendigo Weather Update on Prime has Tatura on them but not Shepparton but Shepparton or Albury Feed does not have Tatura but has Shepparton even thou have 15-km apart.

I think that if Seven doesn’t launch new local news services in the next 12 months, they never will unless forced to do so.

However, given the likelihood of another trigger event, it will be left to Seven to decide if they are willing to invest in the regions.

Personally, I think that regional affiliates in the long term will do one of 3 things combined with local news noodle updates:

  1. local news bulletins will end up as a 10 to 15 minute window inserted into a national bulletin (probably the afternoon edition);

  2. a half hour multi region local news bulletin on a secondary channel (similar to what happens over Summer in WIN when sport is on the main Nine channel); or

  3. Local news will move to strictly online streaming.

I don’t think there is too much money in producing local news as advertisers generally look at viewer numbers and not what show it is.

Meaning SCA’s TV stations changing hands? Right?

I don’t think a trigger event like that will happen in the foreseeable future as SCA have already indicated that an offer they received for the Television stations were undervalued l, I doubt they will get a similar deal to the Prime deal there.

One. Seven is unlikely to introduce / reintroduce local news for regional Victoria, Canberra, Newcastle and Wollongong

Two. SCA is likely to stay focused on TV and it’s unlikely to change hands anytime soon.

Those are the bold predictions I’m making right now

They said they would look to expand investment in local news before they brought Prime Media Group. Plus James Wurburton said in January last year that they’re planning to launch a bulletin for Newcastle.

Promises from almost 2 years ago. If they were going to launch something don’t you think they would’ve done it by now?

2 years have passed gone by. Nothing has happened and let’s not forget that nine also said last year that a Tasmania based nine news bulletin would be up and running by now. The true reality? It truly does not exist yet.

So I do not believe that a Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra or regional Victorian (apart from Albury) 7 news bulletin will get off the ground anytime soon

Pip Waller has left 7 Canberra, and will now be working at 7NEWS Regional WA, according to her Twitter account.

Seven Regional have hired Joanne Griffiths as their Mildura/Sunraysia journalist, according to her Linkedin page - but not sure if the updates have started in Mildura/Sunraysia yet. My guess is they’ll begin in the new year when the updates return from their Christmas & New Year break.

I recall they mentioned they would commence around mid-January.

So they’ll have Dani Sharp present the updates from Canberra and Joanne Griffiths will shoot footage?

Is that all the local news Mildura is going to get? Off topic don’t Mildura already get the western or north central, victorian edition of WIN News or not?

Yes they do but there’s no local stories in the bulletin. Only the weather is local so it’s pointless that they broadcast WIN News in the Sunraysia region.
