I know this has been discussed before, but is there any particular reason why Sydney’s 6pm bulletin has one presenter on weeknights, but two at the weekend? Seems like it should be the other way round.

It’s not just Sydney. Melbourne and Adelaide also do this.

Why, though? If anything, surely you’d have two presenters on during the week, when there is more news happening?

Probably to have multiple options ready at hand to eventually replace the weekday anchor when the time comes?

Well why have the two present together? I don’t think it’s law that the 6pm weekday anchor has to have been a weekend anchor previously, is it?

So one can move to weekdays and the other stay on weekends. Therefore no major changes for the audience.

Do the audience really care, though?

What about less news on weekends so two readers take up more time and can read more short little stories.

In Brisbane, Paul Burt reading weather in a black suit. Wow.
He was very proper and solemn reading as well.

I don’t understand why the weekend presenters couldn’t have just done it - they’re more than qualified

The capability of the weekend anchors isn’t in question. This is a strategic decision. The networks want their main personalities front and centre for this news. It’ll be part of promos for years to come and is an incredible career highlight.

Getting your main anchors in not only shows your audience how committed to the story you are, but also the magnitude of the story.
