Melb sunset was 6:25pm today & it was a sunny 24-25°c day. So kinda makes sense
They probably decided to do pre-recorded video loops instead in order to cut costs. Makes Nine stand out way more than Seven in terms of a city backdrop, because they have a LIVE camera. Seven used to have the LIVE camera shots in Melbourne and Adelaide but not anymore.
Makes me wonder if 7NEWS Sydney, Brisbane and Perth will soon get pre-recorded city backdrop loops?
The news update had the old night background to show night time

I would suggest it might just be down to the news director at the time. The director for 7 Melbourne was the director for 7 in Adelaide. They too went from a live backdrop to a pre-recorded or generic “7NEWS” backdrop, and then in Melbourne.
