If Nine axes their Gold Coast bulletin next, the Gold Coast could be just like Geelong and become part of the Brisbane TV license area, with the Gold Coast transmitters to instead be used to extend their coverage range of the Brisbane stations.
Then they’ll shut down the regional transmitters of PRIME, NBN and WIN-10, and no more local advertising on the Gold Coast. Simple as that.
The bad news is that without any local competition, I doubt we’ll see Nine improve the bulletin much further (ie: the dreadful set will be here to stay!)
Silver lining… It’s good news for the Brisbane news bulletin if both Steve and Amanda return to the reporting rounds. 2 very strong journalists to boost the ranks.
Max mentioned in an article recently that the team was quite young - so Steve and Amanda would bring some great and much needed experience to the team.
With the benefit of hindsight, seems obvious now with Seven not extending Burt’s contract and being willing to share Cantor with 10 while she stayed on for the lifestyle shows.
Am guessing this decision would’ve been a while in the making.
Will Sally Pearson lose her job as sports presenter as the result of the axing of GC News? (The announcement came the morning after she was formally inducted into Sport Australia Hall of Fame)
This actually makes sense, can just as easily slot the content into the 6pm Brisbane bulletin with the hour they have to fill, a return the network schedule reduces costs and they are reduce headcount from presenting team while reallocating others.
Don’t 7 and 9 in Queensland already save the bigger Gold Coast stories for their main 6pm bulletins anyway? When I was up there a few months ago I recall seeing GC reporters filing GC content for the Brisbane 6pm bulletins.
Yes lots of Gold Coast stories appear in the 6pm bulletins - often semi duplicated from the 5.30 story. The ones that will go missing will be all the units for sale stories and fender benders both of which get a lot of local attention. The fishing, beach and surf reports are already covered enough by Brisbane.
Steve on Brisbane sport would be a good idea. But, he was really missed from regional Qld when he moved to the GC. Depending on the length of Rob Brough’s absence, I’d be shipping Steve up there ASAP.
If they are retaining Sally (unsure why), you’d imagine they would have to slot her on presenting sport. Not much use anywhere else.
Seven and Prime did a joint bulletin, presented by Melissa Downes. IIRC it aired first on Seven, then on Prime. Lasted for a few years before it went back to Prime doing their own bulletin.
Newsflash, Gold Coast has been part of the Brisbane TV licence area since TV started back in 1959. Before the mid 1980s, all Gold Coast viewers received their TV direct from the Mt Coot-ha and or Mt Warning transmitters direct.
