Outside of a media place like this board, would 7 having different PBP commentators for each match they cover each round really be a selling point for viewers and encourage them to stick with 7 over going to Fox? I just don’t see it personally.
If you look on socials people don’t want to listen to BT. Currently he does 2 matches a round. If he’s limited to 1 in a typical 3 match round people will be happy
Haha fair enough about that!
Brian Taylor has been criticised for his commentary in last night’s game.
Though there were mixed reactions over whether his interpretation of the Patrick Dangerfield tackle on Carlton’s Sam Walsh showed a lack of understanding of the rules or not.
When is he not every time he commentates on tv he is criticised
This is one of three Power matches to be shown on three hour delay on FTA in South Australia.
With Head of sport now gone, will be interesting to see if there are any changes to 7’s broadcasting next season, given there are lots of cuts
What’s 7’s long term game?
Save money, be more profitable to be able to bid more competitively when sports rights come up again?
Live sport is about the only thing that rates well on free to air.
Surprised that there is no roaming Brian tonight
The same article says Brian Taylor’s future at Seven is now under cloud after Lewis Martin’s departure, as Martin was BT’s biggest supporter. It also says the contracts of most commentators are linked to the AFL broadcast rights deal which means a number of big names would be out at the end of 2024.
The article adds that who replaces Martin as the network’s head of sport is expected to be a race in three: Gary O’Keeffe (football), Andrew Hore-Lacy (racing) and Chris Jones (cricket).
This isn’t terrible news, although nobody likes to see job losses, probably a welcome and overdue occurrence. You’d expect some of the newer, younger faces of recent years to remain and continue or gain more prominence, while some older, longer-serving ones such as yes BT, 30 year vet Watson and 15 years for Richardson, as well as some production staff could be sent packing, maybe Foxtel or radio might pick them up. You’d think JB would be safe, cricket too. Social media has been calling for this on a nightly basis!
There could be admin/HQ candidates from Sydney too, AFAIK sport sales bosses are or at least always were based there? Or poach a rival broadcaster’s HoS or senior sport manager/EP? Or bring in someone brand new?
Why would a business executive be put in charge of a tv production department?
If this is the case, 7 should 1000% keep Jason Bennett and promote him to their main caller status. He can still do AFLW & VFL while calling Friday Nights & other big games.
7 should keep Nicholson & Brayshaw since they are part of both afl & cricket. But should try to get some better play by play callers for AFL.
No Jason Bennett tonight, maybe 7’s swapped him to Sunday afternoon with Al Nicholson now doing Saturday nights because there are no Thursday’s
Edit: looks like it’s not a permanent change
Whoever gets the role, if Lewis Martin is replaced, will be on a lot less money than what Lewis was on for sure.
Well, he was also GM>MD of HSV-7 (Seven Melbourne) and for 16 years, so a fair chuck if not more would’ve come out of that position.
The new HoS surely won’t also have that position as well, as some have suggested, it might not even (for now at least) be replaced.

Today:
Joel Selwood comments on Carlton’s use of foot skills on the deck & Brian Taylor searching asks him ‘you think they’re getting ahead of themselves!?’ to which Selwood clarifies they are playing the conditions.
i think sometimes BT doesn’t actually listen to or pay attention to his fellow commentators
Only sometimes?
Getting criticism for his commentary again today (not surprised) for bias against Carlton (by Carlton fans)
E.g:
- 6 goals up, bemoaning a non touched call when we were 11pts up 7min left in the third
- paper bag joke about deals on Lygon St
- Selwood makes a soccer/Euros comment and BT asks excitedly if he’s insinuating Carlton are getting ahead of themselves
- Brian Taylor’s latest claim against Carlton after the Brodie Kemp & Sam Walsh comments, that Carlton players were statpadding while running in transition.
