They’re pretty lucky as it is with the amount of live games they get for their home teams per season (this applies equally to SA and WA).
It’s not like they need to ‘grow the game’ there like they do in NSW and QLD.
Take round eight (next week) for example, where we have three intrastate Derbies.
If the 2025-31 broadcasting rights rules took effect for this round, the Sydney Derby on Saturday would be required to be delayed by two hours on Channel Seven in Sydney, but the Showdown and QClash (on Thursday and Sunday respectively) would still be allowed to be shown live on Seven in Adelaide and Brisbane respectively.
I think this is something that Seven and/or the AFL would be keen to avoid, not having an intrastate derby on a Saturday in the first eight rounds of the season. But it’ll be what it is.
I don’t think the new deal says that all NSW & QLD games must be shown on delay, only three for each team.
Also no way AFL and Seven would allow Fox to tell Seven to delay a local derby. There would be riots on the streets here in Adelaide if Seven was forced to show next weeks showdown on delay.
To my understanding any Saturday matches involving the Swans/Giants/Lions/Suns in the first eight rounds must be on a two-hour delay in those markets, but who knows how many matches those teams will play on that day - this’ll only be known once the 2025 fixture is released towards the end of this year.
If I remember correctly, the last time a Derby was delayed on FTA in their state was a Friday night Western Derby in 2005, which Channel Nine televised live in Melbourne but I think may’ve been delayed by two hours in Perth. I also cannot recall if a Showdown has ever been delayed on FTA in Adelaide.
It’s because the broadcast deal mentions super Saturday Fox exclusive in the first 8 rounds. And then mentions that’s 7 gets Saturday night from R16.
So it’s an assumption that Saturday R1-8 will be live on Fox and delayed on 7 in local markets. While R9-15 will be live on Fox and live on local markets for 7. And then from R16 there will be a 7 produced Saturday night match.
But there were also articles mentioning the delayed broadcasts
Okay thanks. Tried looking for some info but could only find what was in the broadcast deal thread. Everything else had limited information or needed a paid subscription.
Doesn’t Darcy serve as “host” (main caller) usually on Saturdays anyway? Although this week was an exception in bringing in Nicolson due to the Bulldogs playing.
I’m guessing, due to seniority, BT is “host” on FNF and Bennett is for his games (not sure about JB does he serve as “host” for some games too?)
• Brayshaw the host & a caller on Friday night with BT
• Darcy the host & a caller on Saturday night with Bennett
• don’t remember who the host is Thursday night, maybe Abbey?
Hamish McLachlan was the FNF host until a few years ago, where BT was the main caller after Bruce McAvaney stepped down and JB (only joining in 2018 replacing Basil Zempilas on SNF due to replacing AOK on WS and replaced BT in 2017 after he replaced Dennis Cometti after 2016 on FNF). Then JB joined BT in 2021 on FNF. And Luke Darcy became solo caller on SNF and became a caller a few years into the 2012 deal when BT used to call solo. But that all since changed with Jason Bennett and Alister Nicholson plus Thursday nights and less Sundays and BT and JB radio commitments as well.
LOL since when does ‘kids commitments’ dictate media contract obligations, let alone major commercial TV. Unless it was a special birthday or something. Usually this stuff is sorted weeks/months in advance isn’t it. Lingy has definitely reduced his role in recent years, once one of 7AFL’s most prolific and goes back to the previous deal since day dot with Luke Darcy from Ten and Hamish McLachlan in 2012 (only Richo 2010 and Tim Watson early 90s remain longer).
Tonight is usually their highest-rating program on TV for a year outside the GF (and any local teams making finals) and Olympics, IIRC. Used to do 200k there, probably mid-100k for 2024. Should be at least, given it’s a ‘premier’ Thursday night and standalone timeslot with FTA national exposure, contest permitting.
Usually we get the same eastern state promos, however, sometimes we get a different version that includes the matches with local teams that are a Fox production (generally if there isn’t a Seven match here on Saturday Night), and occasionally SANFL matches.
