Yes you can. Yes it might. And many prelims over the years have been bigger or better than the GF. Take 11 years ago for example, hilarious comparison.
Richmond vs. Collingwood is as big as it gets for Melbourne (outside them playing in a GF I guess) and with NRL and shit all else against it, 90% (and I did say or at least in later stages if close).
You obviously haven’t spent any time in Melbourne this week. The hype around this game is at absolute fever pitch. It’s the biggest game in several years including Grand Finals.
While a grand final might reach 90% share, and there are lots of elements that factor into to that, the big difference to other games is that Seven has exclusive rights to GFs. So, while the number of people watching tonight’s game on the telly in Melbourne might be huge, a big percentage will be watching on Fox Footy.
Nadia Bartel (wife of Brownlow medallist and Geelong premiership player Jimmy Bartel) will co-host next Monday’s red carpet coverage, according to today’s Herald Sun. Nadia is three weeks away from giving birth to her second son.
People watching Foxtel don’t impact FTA network percentage shares. Yes, the overall audience will be lower but Seven will still dominate the percentage of people watching FTA.
The more people that watch the Foxtel coverage the fewer will watch Seven and the lower Seven’s share.
An earlier post was trying to compare the share Seven receives for a Grand Final that is exclusive to Seven and the share for tonight’s game; tonight’s game will not achieve the same share as a GF because it isn’t exclusive.
Think about this logically. If they are watching Foxtel instead of Seven how can that lower Seven’s share? The only way to lower Seven’s share is to tune in to Nine, Ten or another FTA channel instead.
If they are watching the AFL on Foxtel there are fewer people watching AFL on Seven; the fewer that watch Seven the lower the share. If the game was exclusive to Seven, Seven share would be higher.
Using your scenario of 90 out of 100 (90%), if there’s another 20 watching on FOX Footy and the game becomes a Seven exclusive, the scenario then becomes 110 out of 120 (92%)
