This news seems to have slipped under the radar- SEN will no longer be broadcast the Supercars Championship going forward.
Because motoesport on radio doesnt work.
Iâm at the V8s in Sydney now and you need visuals as well as audio. I am listening to the on track commentary on 89.5fm (Fox commentary) and you need both.
For once SEN makes a smart move. Just dont repace it with more fucking SENTrack.
It was mentioned here a few weeks back (not sure if this thread or the NRL coverage thread, and I havenât seen it reported elsewhere so canât verify it) that SEN plans to resume calling four NRL games per week this year, so perhaps the loss of V8 Supercars makes room for that.
It can work if done properly, and certain types of motorsport tend to lend themselves better to being compatible with radio commentary (Radio Le Mans being a good example in sportscar racing) than others.
The SEN coverage of the Supercars however always seemed a bit half hearted, while the commentators were fine, the coverage lacked atmosphere and felt like it was being called off a TV screen. It was also always hit and miss over what would be covered, e.g. Sunday races were often covered but not Saturdays.
If the reports that SEN are increasing their NRL commentary output are true, that would explain why they would want to free up more weekend afternoons. SEN really needs to make the most of what NRL rights they do have if they want to grow their audience in the northern states.
Well Supercars is not something that lends itself well to radio. Weâre not as nuanced as the Le Mans folks. Letâs say @Radiohead was trying to get around @JBar as they turned into a corner, and then they rear end him. I want to see the rear ending and the ensuring punch-up those two are in.
Golfâs another one that does not lend itself well to radio, and funnily enough, SEN covered it. I want to see how hard someone can whack the ball. Words by themselves do nothing for me in that regard.
Not to mention the company who were covering it. As always, SEN went in half arsed and got a half arsed effort. You either commit to the sport in full, or forget it.
Good. Get SEN 1170 away from being a poor carbon copy of SEN 1116. Still a long way to go. Best thing they can do is tell Hutchy to join Bezos and Musk in a one way ticket to the sun, and get owners and management in who gets Sydney sports.
They are going to 4 games a week.
I have no idea why they went back to 2 games a week in the first place whether that was around rights issues or the fact they on-sell the games on to SRN.
I think I may have read somewhere that they leased the rights of Triple M to broadcast on their allocated slots but thatâs not confirmed.
F1 radio coverage on BBC 5Live is excellent. SEN should try to access a syndicated feed of that.
this is the example i was going to bring up too. I will often listen to the European races via the F1 app streaming the radio in the car and its fantastic coverage
During weekdays, after Coz and Heals (Breakfast with Corey Parker and Ian Healy), SEN Gold Coast 1620am will then take Whateley (Mornings) and Dwayneâs World (Afternoons), followed by The Run Home with Joel and Fletch (Joel Caine and Bryan Fletcher) and Sportsday with Scott Sattler and Mat Rogers.
Makes sense.
How have SEN not managed to buy onto Gold Coast DAB - surely they can pay the equivalent of whatever SCA save in royalties from carrying âFresh Folk HitsââŚ
Bad news for Simon Hillâs football show on SEN.
Some news for those who have askedâŚsadly, The Global Game wonât be returning to the airwaves, at least for now. I believe the show has been unable to secure sponsors.
This is where
is in Australia, unfortunately.
Thanks to all who listened & all our contributors
