SEN (Radio)

This news seems to have slipped under the radar- SEN will no longer be broadcast the Supercars Championship going forward.

Because motoesport on radio doesnt work.

I’m at the V8s in Sydney now and you need visuals as well as audio. I am listening to the on track commentary on 89.5fm (Fox commentary) and you need both.

For once SEN makes a smart move. Just dont repace it with more fucking SENTrack.

It was mentioned here a few weeks back (not sure if this thread or the NRL coverage thread, and I haven’t seen it reported elsewhere so can’t verify it) that SEN plans to resume calling four NRL games per week this year, so perhaps the loss of V8 Supercars makes room for that.

It can work if done properly, and certain types of motorsport tend to lend themselves better to being compatible with radio commentary (Radio Le Mans being a good example in sportscar racing) than others.

The SEN coverage of the Supercars however always seemed a bit half hearted, while the commentators were fine, the coverage lacked atmosphere and felt like it was being called off a TV screen. It was also always hit and miss over what would be covered, e.g. Sunday races were often covered but not Saturdays.

If the reports that SEN are increasing their NRL commentary output are true, that would explain why they would want to free up more weekend afternoons. SEN really needs to make the most of what NRL rights they do have if they want to grow their audience in the northern states.

Well Supercars is not something that lends itself well to radio. We’re not as nuanced as the Le Mans folks. Let’s say @Radiohead was trying to get around @JBar as they turned into a corner, and then they rear end him. I want to see the rear ending and the ensuring punch-up those two are in.

Golf’s another one that does not lend itself well to radio, and funnily enough, SEN covered it. I want to see how hard someone can whack the ball. Words by themselves do nothing for me in that regard.

Not to mention the company who were covering it. As always, SEN went in half arsed and got a half arsed effort. You either commit to the sport in full, or forget it.

Good. Get SEN 1170 away from being a poor carbon copy of SEN 1116. Still a long way to go. Best thing they can do is tell Hutchy to join Bezos and Musk in a one way ticket to the sun, and get owners and management in who gets Sydney sports.

They are going to 4 games a week.

I have no idea why they went back to 2 games a week in the first place whether that was around rights issues or the fact they on-sell the games on to SRN.

I think I may have read somewhere that they leased the rights of Triple M to broadcast on their allocated slots but that’s not confirmed.

F1 radio coverage on BBC 5Live is excellent. SEN should try to access a syndicated feed of that.

this is the example i was going to bring up too. I will often listen to the European races via the F1 app streaming the radio in the car and its fantastic coverage

During weekdays, after Coz and Heals (Breakfast with Corey Parker and Ian Healy), SEN Gold Coast 1620am will then take Whateley (Mornings) and Dwayne’s World (Afternoons), followed by The Run Home with Joel and Fletch (Joel Caine and Bryan Fletcher) and Sportsday with Scott Sattler and Mat Rogers.

Makes sense.

How have SEN not managed to buy onto Gold Coast DAB - surely they can pay the equivalent of whatever SCA save in royalties from carrying “Fresh Folk Hits”…

Bad news for Simon Hill’s football show on SEN.

Some news for those who have asked…sadly, The Global Game won’t be returning to the airwaves, at least for now. I believe the show has been unable to secure sponsors.

This is where :soccer: is in Australia, unfortunately.

Thanks to all who listened & all our contributors :+1:

Sunday Herald Sun reports David Schward and Craig Hart began their new show Point of View this morning. It will air every Sunday from 8am to 10am.

Radio war erupts over NRL great

Fox Sports star Bryan Fletcher is at the centre of a big-money tug of war between radio networks Triple M and SEN.

We’re told Fletcher’s offer from the FM network is much bigger than just a rugby league role on the Triple M’s weekend footy coverage.

There’s been talk about even offering him a crack at breakfast radio or as the drive host to replace Marty Sheargold, the man who recently quit over his derogatory remarks towards the Matildas.

Where a breakfast gig would leave current hosts Beau Ryan and Aaron Woods is intriguing.

All three of them have rugby league backgrounds and couldn’t do the show together.

SEN boss Craig Hutchison will be doing everything to convince Fletch to stay.

His afternoon show with Joel Caine is their highest rating program.

There seems to be a problem with the 1629 SEN Mt Gambier’s transmitter at the moment. Firstly it was completely off air for a few hours last Thursday may 8th, after coming back on mid afternoon I don’t know if it was running at reduced power or something, but it was like listening to a long distance radio station, the kitchen radio could barely pick it up, it was a little better on the car radio, the signal was weak and lots background noise etc. Since Tuesday it seems to be running at the full 400 watts of power again, however the audio quality seems very muffled and it’s like it’s not tuned in properly, almost unlistenable. I know the audio quality on SEN isn’t the best compared with other AM stations, but it used to be better than what it is currently.

I was having a play around with the sen app last night during the Tigers v rabbitos game last night and noticed the app has different speed settings one called FTA and one called streaming then there’s is another streaming but the delay is 30 seconds, has anyone tried these out while watching a game? Do they work?

Are you talking SEN Sync?

Yep. Is it any good?
