SEN (Radio)

That’s a blight on Hutchy. He’s a journo, he should know better. You’d think that in the sports news department they could have a solid 5 minute sports news bulletin at the TOTH with sports scores and a bit more depth in the stories. Actual news, you could get away with maybe 2-3 1 line headlines. given there are other places they could get news.

Hutchy is the one man AM version of ARN - running a sinking ship and he’s not realising it. For a sporting nation, we could use a better sports radio station network.

I agree - but that takes resources, more than you think to just extend out a bulletin from a headlines package to a 5 minute news bulletin with audio grabs, stories etc.

Well, sorry to say, but Hutchy has once again failed. How hard is it to employ one, maybe two people to do exactly that in shifts. Get the existing news readers to do that. You can do this on a national basis, and can be pre-recorded at certain times.

Also, in something that is related to that, they need to fix their website. I wanna know what’s on their schedules ahead of time, and they shouldn’t be using a Google Doc. That’s piss poor public high school level - and I should know, we do this. Hutchy’s at our level - and that’s fucking sad.

Hutchy needs to sell up and fuck off. He went too hard, too fast, and failed miserably.

Certainly appears you do.

SEN will have live commentary of LIV Golf Adelaide from The Grange this Friday to Sunday.

Also, Tim Watson returned to breakfast radio this week, three months after retiring from Seven.

i can’t imagine golf being an exciting radio sport to be honest.

I’d actually love to hear SEN do hourly sports news at length, with news headlines to follow in a brief format. Ie- the reverse of what other stations are doing.

News on SEN is a little pointless. You’d never see ESPN/Fox Sports run nor mention any general news items.

I’d have hourly sport stories at length, followed by news headlines only, followed by weather & traffic.

That’s what I’ve suggested. Unless it’s 9/11-eque significant, then a quick 1 line headline for the 3 biggest stories would suffice.

You’d think a sports radio station owned by a sports journalist would prioritise proper sports news reporting.

I’m not certain he actually cares about the quality of any of the programming output aired on SEN.

For him, it’s not about the listener—it’s all about cost-cutting and delivering the cheapest product possible to ensure the “best result” for the people who really matter: the SEG stakeholders.

Simply adding ‘1 or 2 resources’ is expensive. All newsrooms around the country are reducing staffing. I actually think it’s good they have their own people reading it, and every half hour. The newsroom puts out bulletins for all network stations. It was Hutchy who brought these bulletins back inhouse, rather than taking feeds from 3AW. t

Maybe the best way to manage it would be to have a general news component only during the breakfast shift on weekdays; the rest just sport updates. Emergency alerts are a different matter, they can just be mentioned and listeners in affected areas pointed to local information sources.

Stiff shit for Hurchy.

Maybe he should concentrate on the core business and invest in that, rather than NZ and sports teams. Id be killing off the netball team judt quietly.

I never said having newsroom around the country. They only need one, and can be pre recorded if needed. They may not need additonal staff if they do it right.

SEN could be a great station. But Hutchy’s business acumen, or lack thereof, is holding them back.

not sure that is accurate…core business ins audio reach and sports teams
buy a sports team for $7.1 million and sell it $40. million 2 years later.

Mostly to settle debt. Plus it was the Wildcats. Perth is so inbred for them in the same way Newcastle is for the Knights.

SEN is still in the same camp as ARN. In need of better management that isn’t some fat bald guy who thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips.

getting personal … methinks you don’t have much of an arguement

Unless your name is Craig Hutchinson, then no I wasn’t. And if you are, A - I don’t apologise, B - do your job properly and C - fuck off.

SEN used to be great when it started 20 odd years ago. Now so much of it is sports that very few people are interested in. Their weekend racing segments are terrible and many people I know in the racing industry do not listen to this on SEN, with RSN already the main racing channel.

Another great point. Why are they even bothering with racing? Yes, I know there’s gambling money to be had, but still. Professional sports in general need to be told to fuck right off with their dependence on gambling.

Some of their sports choices at times are bewildering. Late last year, there was a Swans AFLW match from Henson Park that they could have covered on 1170 at least. Instead, they had a NZ vs a country that wasn’t Australia cricket match on. Are you fucking kidding me?

Sorry, you can’t run a station on the smell of an oily rag. The amatuer hour will eventually become noticeable.

Bharat Sundaresan, who is part of SEN’s cricket coverage, features on the ABC’s Australian Story next Monday night.

EDIT:

18 years ago I got a 2nd innings in life & have never stopped smiling or stopped trying to bring as many smiles around me as possible.
