On the way he visits a trailblazing Native American restaurant, sees a spectacular display of water-skiing, a sport invented on this very waterway, and briefly joins a motorbike gang for a whizz on a Harley. Both following the students’ hike, day by day, hour by hour, and later the investigation lead by KGB agent Oleg Kostin, Dead Mountain: The Dyatlov Pass Incident is based on the de-classified files of the real-life case, that had people spinning wild theories all over the world for more than 60 years.

Major Kostin, a war hero who lost his wife and son, has an almost supernatural intuition – an ability to see and feel unexpected, concealed things. One question haunts his investigation: what could frighten the students so much that they left the safety of their tent, in the dead of a cold Siberian night, leaving their clothes and provisions behind? Oleg is hell-bent on finding the truth. But the more he learns, the more it becomes clear: The reason the students died will never see the light of day. No one can ever know what really happened. No one. Except him.

The Great Stink of 1858

Sunday 8 December 07:30 PM

In 1858 thousands of gallons of raw sewage from across London were being dumped into the Thames River every day. When an extraordinary summer heatwave hit the city, it turned the river into a festering, noxious cesspool of filth. Soon enough, The Great Stink overwhelmed the capital.

Xand van Tulleken reveals how the stench overwhelmed London, spreading sickness and fear, forcing the government to undertake one of the greatest civil engineering projects in history: Joseph Bazalgette’s sewer system. Then, Raksha Dave investigates the source of the stink and the dangers Londoners faced, while JJ Chalmers explores the lives of Londoners living in a city swimming in excrement.

Episode 1 Dr Xand van Tulleken tells how an extraordinary heatwave struck London in the summer in 1858 and a terrible stench began to rise from the River Thames. The city was then the biggest on earth, but despite rapid industrialisation the sanitation was still medieval.

Episode 2 Xand van Tulleken traces the story of the Great Stink as it enters its second month. The excrement of nearly 3 million Londoners continued to flow into the Thames, where it was festering under the blazing sun.
