SBS documentary series ‘Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley’ greenlit for production

Australia’s Sleep Revolution’s Dr Michael Mosley is back, collaborating once more with Artemis Media on a new series for SBS designed to wake up Australia to the dangers of bad sleep.

Screenwest is pleased to announce that Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley, a three-part WA documentary series about the dangers of bad sleep has been greenlit for production by SBS, Screen Australia, Screenwest and Lotterywest and the South Australian Film Corporation.

Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley follows renowned doctor, trusted medical journalist and serial insomniac Dr. Michael Mosley, who, together with some of the nation’s poorest sleepers will put their bodies on the line to trial Australian-led, world first sleep treatments. Teaming up with expert Australian sleep physicians, Dr Mosley will wake up the nation to the dangers of bad slumber and inspire a sleep revolution.

Produced by Artemis Media (Ningaloo, Every Family Has a Secret), the series is Dr Mosley’s second collaboration with the WA production company after the 2021 SBS documentary series Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley. The series proved to be a ratings smash, with SBS naming it as one of top four titles for the year across the whole network schedule and across all genres.

The creative team includes series producer Katherine Barrett, alongside returning series director Russell Vines, development producer Nia Pericles and executive producer Celia Tait who previously collaborated on Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley.

“It’s really exciting to be working with Dr Michael Mosley again and to be collaborating with the Flinders University Sleep team. We’re all looking forward to learning how to sleep better!” said Celia Tait, Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley Executive Producer.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Michael Mosley back to Australia after the success of Australia’s Health Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley. We hope this new series educates, inspires and, most of all, makes a positive impact on people’s lives.” said Bernadine Lim, SBS Commissioning Editor for Documentaries.

“First diet, now sleep – it’s fantastic to see Artemis continuing their relationship with Dr Mosley on a second documentary series. Australia’s Sleep Revolution is set to arm Australians with empowering knowledge about how to feel and live better.” said Paul Williams, Screenwest Documentary Executive.

Production credit: Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley is an Artemis Media production for SBS. Principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with SBS. Financed with support from Screenwest and Lotterywest and the South Australian Film Corporation.

Jerusalem: Builders Of The Holy City

Friday 11 November 7:35 PM

For over three thousand years, Jerusalem has been the stage of the foundation of many a myth. These founding tales have forged the great civilizations of the past, starting with the Judaic civilization.

From Antiquity on, the most prestigious architects of the Mediterranean Basin applied themselves to turning this isolated city into one of the jewels of the Middle East.

At the heart of the city, the Romans raised an entire mountain with a view to building the Temple Mount, an immense religious complex drawing from the heritage of the famed Temple of David so sacred in Jewish religion. In order to transport the enormous blocks of stone that make up this architectural feat - the heaviest weighing 400 tons - they had to resort to incredible levels of ingenuity. Centuries later, one of the first great Christian churches would be erected in the center of the city: The Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This monumental edifice was built by Emperor Constantine around the tomb of Christ. A central focus of Christianity for nearly three centuries, Jerusalem never ceased to reinvent itself with each conquest. Years later, it would give rise to one of the wonders of Muslim architecture: The Dome of the Rock, the Islamic Empire’s response to the Constantinian Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

From the Temple’s esplanade to the Dome of the Rock, how were these structures built back in the day? What techniques have allowed them to cross the ages and withstand every earthquake, war, and conquest?

From one hill to the other and from civilization to civilization, this documentary takes an inside look inside the heart of Jerusalem’s iconic monuments that have witnessed 3,000 years of history and mystery, as we reveal the secrets of the Eternal City and its holy builders.

Making Sense Of Cancer With Hannah Fry

Monday 14 November 9:25 PM

Hannah Fry is a professor of maths and is used to investigating the world around her through numbers.

When she’s diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 36 she starts to interrogate the way we diagnose and treat cancer by digging into the statistics, to ask whether we are making the right choices in how we treat this disease.

Are we sometimes too quick to screen and treat cancer? Do doctors always speak to us honestly about the subject? It may seem like a dangerous question to ask, but are we at risk of overmedicalising cancer?

Miscarriage And Me

Tuesday 15 November 9:30 PM

This powerful and moving one-off documentary with broadcaster and musician Myleene Klass shows her opening up about the trauma of her miscarriages, with the aim of breaking the taboo which often surrounds this type of pregnancy loss.

It’s estimated that around 250,000 miscarriages happen every year in the UK.

As part of her journey, Myleene sits down for a heart to heart with her fiancé Simon, as they talk candidly for the first time about what they went through. In a moving encounter, Myleene also discusses miscarriage with her aunt, who she discovers kept her own miscarriage a secret from many of those around her for nearly 40 years.

Elsewhere, Myleene follows a major campaign urging the government to improve miscarriage care for the women and families who have been through it.

Wuthering Harlots

Thursday 17 November 9:30 PM

In the Eighteenth Century, London was the biggest city in the world - a global centre for trade, manufacturing and industry.

Bigger and richer than ever before there was money to spend - and much of that money was spent on sex.

The capital was a hotbed of prostitution and promiscuity upon which tens of thousands of women and girls worked.

This docudrama offers a scholarly yet sensational romp through the brothels, bordellos, bath-houses, and baronial bed chambers of the capital, with eye-opening accounts, from the time, anecdotes, rich and vivid illustrations and rousing dramatic reconstructions with a narrative featuring recurring characters.

We unveil a world in which tens of thousands of women (and men) were used for sexual pleasure.

Tutankhamun: The Last Exhibition

Friday 18 November 7:35 PM

To mark the occasion of the Centenary of this revolutionary discovery, Tutankhamun: The Last Exhibition for the very first time offers viewers an amazing opportunity to meet the pharaoh, relive those unique moments, and have the exclusive chance to see how 150 objects from the treasures of Tutankhamun were moved to the biggest international exhibition ever dedicated to the Golden Boy.

This documentary film retraces this incredible story and offers exclusive access to some of the places
which continue to pulsate with its history. This is how we discover the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and see
the objects from the treasures close-up, just a few centimetres away. We will accompany the experts
during restoration work and while the objects are being moved, as well as travel with them on the road to Los Angeles, Paris, and London.

Producers are now casting for Australia’s Sleep Revolution. Filming will be conducted in Adelaide and regional South Australia, between mid-December 2022 to mid-April 2023.

Saving Venice

Sunday 20 November 7:30 PM

Venice is one of the most iconic cities on the planet, its location driving its economic prosperity whilst leaving it vulnerable to floods.

The first settlers drove wood piles into the lagoon’s soft mud, making it strong enough to bear weight, a technique which supports the entire city.

Samples from 1000-year-old piles show how the mud slows down the water’s rotting of the wood, but increasingly frequent floods pose a new threat.

Faced with losing their city to climate change, Venetians are turning to revolutionary engineering, restoration of the natural environment and knowledge from their past.

Only by using multiple approaches can they hope to save Venice.

Qatar: A Dynasty With Global Ambitions

Monday 21 November 9:30 PM

Host of the 2022 next football World Cup, Qatar is as tiny as it is immensely rich.

Torn between Western modernism and Bedouin conservatism, ruled by the iron fist of a royal family, it sits on the planet gas field and is a major geopolitical Middle East player.

This World Cup will be a symbol of the success of the ‘Qatar start-up’ created by the House of Thani, a family saga with an almost romantic dimension.

With its billions spent on everything, its princes and princesses with glamorous photos worthy of Vanity Fair covers and its palace revolutions, the Al Thani dynasty - which could be described as the ‘Kennedys of the Middle East’ - will have succeeded in three generations in transforming a corner of inhospitable desert into a global capital.

This unauthorised portrait of the rulers at the head of the richest country per capita on the planet will contrast the nation’s extremely rapid success story with its darker side: a diplomacy of corruption, worrying investments across the planet, the exploitation of quasi-slaves from Asia; but above all, the financing of the Muslim Brotherhood and multiple armed Islamist groups, some of which are terrorist, throughout the Arab Spring.

David Attenborough and the Giant Elephant

Wednesday 23 November 7:30 PM

In this one hour special, Sir David Attenborough investigates the amazing life story of the most famous elephant to have ever lived - Jumbo.

With a team of scientists from around the world, Sir David Attenborough has unique access to Jumbo’s skeleton at the American Museum of Natural History. What clues lay in Jumbo’s bones? Can they tell us more about this giant, how he lived and how he died?

And we explore the emotional lives of African elephants to help tell us more about Jumbo. We’ll discover the efforts being made to rescue baby elephants and how these orphans are being transformed into wild living Jumbos of the future.

Arctic Sinkholes

Thursday 24 November 7:30 PM

Scientists investigate colossal explosions in Siberia and other evidence that rapidly melting soil in the Arctic is releasing vast amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

What are the implications for our climate future?

Engineering Reborn

From Friday 25 November 7:30 PM

Bankside dominated the southern shore of the River Thames.

After closing and falling into disrepair it was it was threatened with demolition for years, until Britain’s National Gallery - The Tate - stepped in.

In the 1960s TWA decided to build a new terminal at JFK as a statement of the jet age - designed with a giant concrete swooping roof like a bid’s wing in flight.

But within just a few years it was unable to cope with the number of passengers streaming through into New York, and was closed and fell dormant.Constructed in a former Soviet airship hangar, Tropical Islands Resort is a tropical theme park housed in the world’s biggest free-standing hall.

With a maximum daily capacity of 8,200, it’s the largest indoor waterpark in the world.

But installing enough sand to create a vast indoor beach, as well as an entire indoor tropical rainforest, had its challenges.

Above includes schedule across all day staring with the World Cup on Monday night. It is going to be a big few weeks for SBS with some overnight wins. It will drag down the ratings of the other networks in weekly shares as well somewhat depending on Australia’s results.

In 2018 Australia’s first game averaged +1.65 million on a Saturday night up against AFL with SBS winning the night on 30.7%.

SBS’ shares will be up for that first week of the World Cup. Thanks to the games starting at a friendly 9pm aedt (with the pre-match coverage starting at 8.30pm).

Note that Australia’s second match on Saturday (26 Nov) is in that early timeslot too, and the pre-match coverage starts at 7.30pm. I expect even big numbers and shares for that night.

As for Australia’s first match on the Wednesday (23rd of Nov), id expect Sunrise, Today and ABC Breakfast numbers to be down, as kick-off is 6am.

Daylight savings and time differences mean the SBS schedule will vary a lot from state to state for the duration of the World Cup.

For example, in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, live coverage of the day’s first match from November 22 to 26 will immediately follow SBS World News, so shows including Arctic Sinkholes and Engineering Reborn won’t be shown on linear TV, however those episodes will be available on SBS on Demand.

Also, Celebrity Letters and Numbers S03 E05 won’t be shown in Perth on November 21, but it will also be available on SBS on Demand.

What a pity SBS doesn’t use the “Seven Billion Stories and Counting” slogan anymore. We would’ve been seeing another slogan update later today.
