Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre

Sunday 14 November at 8:30 PM

From multi-Emmy and Peabody Award-winning directors Stanley Nelson and Marco Williams comes the story of what has been called “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history” and a current-day look at its lasting legacy. In the early part of the 20th century, the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a thriving centre of African-American business and culture. Black families flocked there, leaving behind the oppression and violence of the American South. Together, they built a self-reliant economy and a vibrant, peaceful community. On May 31, 1921, a white mob rampaged through Greenwood, murdering men, women, and children, looting property and burning 40-square blocks to the ground. Nearly 10,000 people were left homeless. More than 300 were killed.

New York Super Airport

Tuesday 16 November at 08:40 PM

Designers push the limits of a tight site at LaGuardia Airport and the team build a world-first - twin 450-foot-long pedestrian bridges that allow aircraft to pass beneath.

LaGuardia Airport is hemmed in by river and roads, so designers must push the limits of a tight site by building as tall as possible. This means a vast 120-foot-long escalator is needed to move passengers between floors. But the install hangs precariously in the balance. Below ground the team battles to prevent devastating floods, while above, they build a world-first; twin 450-foot-long pedestrian bridges that allow aircraft to pass beneath.

Hitler’s Countdown to War

Friday 19 November at 7:30pm

What historical events led Hitler to declare war and why?

In this history series, we take an intriguing look at the countdown to World War 2 through the eyes of Adolf Hitler himself. The countdown started on 12th March 1938, when Hitler and his Nazi troops crossed the German border and invaded Austria and ended on the 3rd of September 1939, when both Britain and France declared war on Germany following the invasion of Poland.

The war wouldn’t have happened without the decisions and actions taken by Hitler in this crucial period. So, to understand how it happened, we need to understand him. In this series, we’re telling the story of these 18 months, from March 1938 to September 1939, in a radical new way. A team of leading young historians explores what Hitler was doing day-by-day, week-by-week, revealing how this bully, gambler and arch manipulator brought the world to the edge of destruction.

Inside Balmoral

From Friday 26 November at 7:30pm, 3 episodes

Balmoral has been the ideal retreat for Queen Elizabeth throughout her life. She loves the outdoor life and embraces many of the traditions that have survived since Queen Victoria’s time. One of these longstanding events is the annual ‘Ghilie Ball’ where staff and Royals dance together in the grand Ballroom at Balmoral Castle. But not all Royals have enjoyed their time at this royal home. In September 1936 Edward VIII had invited American divorcee, Mrs Simpsons to Balmoral for an ill-advised visit.

Considering a fair chunk of SBS and SBS Viceland’s schedules are currently taken up by airing the international bulletins, it’ll be interesting to see how both channels will fill the gap left when the bulletins move to the new news channel next year.

More 8 of 10 Cats does Countdown?

Would be cool but that would probably only be possible between 12-3pm because of its M clasification. Maybe they might get regular Countdown to complete their set.

Could be shows like Repeats of Railways Journeys, ships, Simon Reeve, Tony Robinson, Who Do You Think You Are? and maybe some international shows like Jeopardy, Hunting Hitler, Mythbusters, If You Are the One (:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) etc.

Yeah it was a joke, they run it on repeats often and it does well on multi’s but probably not the right fit to replace slots where they’ve moved news bulletins from.
