Medicine or Myth?

From Monday 20 May at 8:30pm (8 weeks)

Maggot Tea and Dried Seahorse Australians pitch their controversial health remedies to a panel of medical experts in Medicine or Myth?

Are alternative remedies simply a myth or do they have a place alongside modern medicine?

Renowned Australian Neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo leads a panel of medical experts aiming to discover if the diverse health remedies of everyday Australians can actually be viable treatments for a range of common ailments.

Hosted by journalist Jan Fran , Medicine or Myth? follows everyday Australians as they pitch their diverse and sometimes divisive health remedies to a panel of medical experts in the hope of being selected for a real-world trial.

Dr Charlie Teo is joined by Family & Women’s Health Expert Dr Ginni Mansberg and Associate Professor in Immunology, Ashraful Haque .

From the everyday to the extreme, cultural traditions to controversial discoveries, these experts explore the stories and claims behind each remedy before selecting the most compelling cases for further investigation in real-world Trials.

Over eight weeks, these medical experts will hear the passionate testimonies of people eager to spread the word about their alternative remedy.

The debut episode explores seven proposed home remedies, including ear wax as a cure for cold sores, seahorse for asthma, charcoal for stings and bites, menstrual blood for period pain, and a fever bath for colds and flu.

The episode features Chris , who proposes Miracle Fruit as a remedy for Dysgeusia. Chris witnessed how effective Miracle Fruit was when a friend with cancer, suffering the taste-altering effects of chemotherapy, was able to enjoy his food when he ate the berry first. He used the berries right up until his death. Originally from West Africa, Miracle Fruit contains a protein that makes anything sour taste incredibly sweet.

Viewers will also meet Beata , who was once badly affected by acne. It impacted on her confidence and she didn’t want to leave the house. After prescribed medications disagreed with her, she remembered a remedy her Polish grandmother had recommended and decided to try it. Her sauerkraut remedy proved effective and she decided to share it on Medicine or Myth?

From cultural traditions to family customs and controversial treatments, no remedy is too unconventional for consideration but only those with genuine potential for improving an ailment will be considered for further investigation in a Trial.

At the end of each episode, insights from the Trial and its ultimate findings will be revealed to the Contributor who presented the remedy. They will discover if it warrants a place alongside modern medicine or in fact proved little more than a myth.

Medicine or Myth? is produced by Warner Bros for SBS. This program provides general information only and does not recommend or endorse any particular treatment. It is not intended to replace the advice provided by your own doctor or medical or health professional.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways

New Series Premiere Thursday 16 May at 7.35pm (6 Parts)

image

From the 1960’s, the axe fell on 4,000 miles of Britain’s rail network. Now, decades later, Rob Bell is going on journey to uncover those lost railway lines. Every week, Rob will explore a different line, experiencing the hidden landscapes, lost infrastructure, and forgotten worlds that disappeared when the line closed.

He’ll experience how, once gone, the lost line affected the community, industry, and lifestyle of the area. But Rob will also be celebrating the new life that’s been created, from the old railway stations that are now beautiful homes, to restored signal boxes and the impressive heritage railways that have sprung up all over the country. Across the series, we’ll see Britain in a new and surprising way - whether it is in rural Wales, the Lake District, or the north of Scotland.

The Flying Scotsman

New Series Premiere Friday 17 May at 7.35pm (2 Parts)

In this series, we chart Flying Scotsman’s remarkable story - spanning 2.5 million miles over 94 years. Flying Scotsman heralded the golden age of steam - smashing records by reaching the 100mph mark, whilst at the same time, ushering in the trend for luxury rail travel. But as diesel trains emerged, the locomotive’s role was diminished, and the nationalised British Rail planned to ditch the relic steamer in the 60s.

SBS and SBS On Demand on Thursday 6 June.

Chimerica

Series Premiere Thursday 23 May at 8:30pm (Double episode)

Lee Berger is a dedicated American photojournalist and passionate idealist who has lost his way after years of working in war zones. He is constantly trying to live up to his early success, where an electrifying photograph he took as a young man nearly 30 years ago in Tiananmen Square skyrocketed him into fame. It was an image of a man in a white shirt, a carrier bag in each hand, standing up to the might of the Chinese military, referred to as the ‘Tank Man’.

When accusations of fake news are levelled against him, his world falls apart. Desperate to reclaim his credibility, and remember the photographer he used to be, Lee sets out on a journey to find the Tank Man, convinced he is alive and well and living in New York City.

Chimerica premieres first on SBS with a double episode on Thursday, 23 May at 8.30pm, followed by its final double episode the following week. Each episode will be made available on SBS On Demand following its broadcast

With the French Open this week, testing the water whether there is any interest is the SBS schedule.

There is for me for this:

And this is reasonably funny. Two game shows merged into one.

Cats does Countdown is a great show. Prefer the newer ones on Viceland Tuesday night’s but the Saturday older ones are still good.

Where Are You Really From? - Season 2

Premieres Wednesday 19 June at 8pm (4 part documentary series)

Yes, but, where are you really from? Comedian Michael Hing returns with Season 2 of Where Are You Really From? to unpack that perennial question.

The 4-part series is produced by the team from The Feed , SBS VICELAND’s award-winning news and current affairs’ programme.

“In a time when Australia seems to be more divided than ever, telling these stories of incredible people overcoming hardship, changing their communities and often making new lives for themselves has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on. It’s an absolute privilege to bring these stories to Australians because in a way, they are representative of a lot of stories all migrant communities go through, and they shine a light on the bright and inclusive future we can be a part of.” – Michael Hing.

What does it mean to have your identity as an Australian constantly questioned? To be asked, not just where you’re from, but where you’re really from?

It’s a question that comedian Michael Hing still gets asked in 2019 – even though the Hing family migrated to Australia more than a hundred years and five generations ago.

In order to understand how other people respond to the question, season 2 of Where Are You Really From? follows Michael to four rural and suburban communities where he meets a diverse mix of Australians.

Playful but moving, the series explores the complex issues of cultural heritage and identity, and the way our assumptions around what an Australian looks like impact our understanding of what it means to be Australian. Where Are You Really From? connects wider Australia to a history and to communities many people would not be aware of.

Michael meets Italian families that overcame racism and World War II internment to become the beating heart of the Far North Queensland town of Ingham. He then travels to Katanning , a Western Australian community of 4,000 people and more than 40 different nationalities. He also heads to the Barossa Valley to learn about the forgotten history of the German-speaking refugees and their fight to save the Barossa-German dialect passed down for nearly 200 years. In the final episode, Michael joins the Assyrian community of Fairfield , many that fled warzones to make new home in Western Sydney.

Their stories test perceptions of Australian identity and highlight the ways in which cultural expectations and stereotypes can impact people.

…On multicultural Australia

“We are a nation, of so many colours, so many races that makes this country.” Alep Mydie, The Imam of Katanning, WA.

…On his Italian heritage

“I’m born in the lucky country Australia but the blood in my veins is from the greatest culture on earth and that’s Italian.” Andrew Lancini, Halifax, QLD.

…On the Barossa’s forgotten history

“Some of the first boat people came here and you know, look what’s happened since then.” Stephen Henschke, Winemaker, Barossa Valley, SA.

…On growing up in Australia

I fell in love with the country, because I could see so much that I could do that I couldn’t before. In other countries they could only dream of what we have and that’s what sad.” Albie Aldahawi, Wrestler, Fairfield, NSW

This third and final episode of the series won’t be shown in SA, NT and WA due to SBS’ live coverage of Women’s World Cup and French Open, but it will be available on SBS on Demand later that night.

SBS has published double page ad on page 2 and 3 of today’s Herald Sun and Daily Telegraph, plus a banner ad on the front page, to promote tonight’s premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale season 3. Here is the Herald Sun version.

The digital billboard equivalent of these ads are fantastic, visually very striking.

Does anyone know if the first 2 episodes are dropping on SBS on Demand earlier? I can’t find that info anywhere.

All I could find is that on SBS on Demand the first 3 episodes will be up today with only the first 2 airing on TV tonight.
