‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season 5 is on the way

The countdown is on until the new season premieres exclusively in Australia on SBS and On Demand.

Praise be: we don’t have long to wait until the premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale 's fifth season. Hulu has announced the hit series will debut its much anticipated new season in the United States on 14 September.

As the exclusive Australian broadcaster, SBS fast-track the premiere episodes across both SBS and SBS On Demand. We’ll have more details on the Australian premiere date and local times closer to launch.

The Emmy award-winning star and executive producer, Elisabeth Moss, shared the news on her Instagram that the season will debut with two episodes that she has directed. Moss made her directing debut with episodes in the show’s fourth season.

Also returning is SBS Australia’s award-winning Handmaid’s Tale companion podcast, Eyes on Gilead. Each episode of the podcast offers entertaining and engrossing analysis of The Handmaid’s Tale, along with exclusive interviews with the stars and creators of the show. You can subscribe to Eyes On Gilead on your preferred podcast platform now, to relive the events of season 4.

The season 5 synopsis picks up from the shock events that closed out season 4: “June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is produced by MGM Television and executive produced by Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Eric Tuchman, Yahlin Chang, Rachel Skukert, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Steve Stark and Kim Todd. The series is internationally distributed by MGM.

Yvonne Strahovski is nominated for a 2022 Logie Award for Most Popular Australian Actor Or Actress In An International Program, for her performance as the complicated Serena Waterford.

Pompeii: The Origins

image

Sunday 26 Jun 7:30pm

For the first time, and thanks to new archaeological excavations, this documentary reveals how Pompeii, the pride of its builders, developed, from its origins at the end of the seventh century BC until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The use of CGI and 3D mapping provides a very clear view of this ancient superstructure and eight centuries of urban evolution.

We will revive this great historical fresco through accounts by international archaeologists and historians.

Pompeii: The Origins is a journey to the heart of an ancient ‘motion designed’ city.

Elvis And The Uss Arizona

Sunday 3 July 5:30 PM

Elvis And The USS Arizona tells the surprising story of how one of music’s biggest icons helped to establish a USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbour. In the late 1950s, the USS Arizona Memorial Commission was struggling to raise money for a permanent memorial to honor the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives aboard the battleship on December 7, 1941. After a successful fundraising push, momentum had slowed, and though construction on the approved design was underway, only half of the necessary funds had been raised.

Recently honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and headed to Hawaii to begin filming Blue Hawaii, Elvis was presented by his manager to the idea of a benefit concert to support the memorial fund. He agreed without hesitation and on March 25, 1961, performed to a sold-out crowd at the Bloch arena on the naval base. Elvis’ concert would draw public attention to the plight and help galvanize efforts to finish the USS Arizona Memorial as it still stands today.

Napoleon: In The Name Of Art

Sunday 3 July 7:30 PM

While suffering the anguish of exile on the remote island of St. Helena, before his death, we read in his memoirs that Napoleon thought posterity would admire him not only for his battles, but for bringing culture and beauty to the people, for creating the state school system and the modern idea of a universal museum, owned by everyone, open to the common people.

It’s from this aspect of his life that NAPOLEON: IN THE NAME OF ART was born, a documentary featuring the Oscar® winner Jeremy Irons as a very special guide, produced by 3D Produzioni and Nexo Digital with the support of Intesa Sanpaolo Bank and Gallerie d’Italia. Based on a subject by Didi Gnocchi, who signed the screenplay with Matteo Moneta, NAPOLEON: IN THE NAME OF ART is directed by Giovanni Piscaglia with the original soundtrack of the composer and pianist Remo Anzovino.

Gone Fishing With Mortimer & Whitehouse

Saturday 23 July 8:30 PM 2 episodes

Lifelong friends and comedic royalty Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer have more in common than just their love of laughter - on a more serious note, they have both suffered complex heart disease. Paul is an experienced fisherman, Bob a complete novice. Paul thought a tour of the country’s finest fishing spots might help Bob’s recovery, and along the way maybe they would learn something about each other. In this funny and poignant six-part series, we eavesdrop on their expedition as they reconnect with each other and share their personal experiences of life, while testing the parameters of true friendship. They also fish, and talk nonsense. A lot.\n\nOn soggy riverbanks, they candidly discuss everything from show business to solitude, relationships and romance, while trying to catch some of the most significant species of fish in the country. This is as much an insight into the hearts and minds of two of the UK’s best-loved comics as it is about capturing the extreme exhilaration and occasional monotony of one of the most popular pastimes in the UK.

Ep1 : While in Norfolk fishing for tench, Bob tries to impress Paul with his childhood fishing rod - and fails. They share nostalgia for their younger years and reveal how they recently came face to face with their own mortality. After a brief respite in a local brewery, they reluctantly camp down in yurts before fishing again the next day where the elusive tench seems to evade them until the very last minute.

Ep 2: Paul and Bob fish for the mighty barbel in Hay-on-Wye. Passing a graveyard, they muse about the future and chat to a local vicar about death, and their own funerals.

New York: The City That Never Sleeps

Wednesday 27 July 7:30 pm

The three-part documentary sheds a highly entertaining light on the colourful array of people, places and events that make up the Big Apple. In three episodes, the series maps the richest, busiest and biggest that the city has to offer.

In Richest, we go from the realtors hustling to sell multi-million-dollar apartments in Manhattan to the immigrant jeweller, now designing bespoke diamond rings for the mega-wealthy. In Busiest we meet the people that make the city tick, from the staff running Grand Central – the busiest railway station in the USA – to the garbage collectors battling rats as they clean up the streets. And in Biggest, we go from Donato, whose job is to maintain the lights in Times Square, some of them 22 stories high, to Daniel, manager of the biggest rooftop bar in Manhattan where 1,200 guests nightly are served with around 8,000 cocktails per shift.

But the star of the show is the city itself, its legendary skyline, vast grid of glitzy avenues and fascinating cross streets and above all, its larger-than-life characters.

Too Close

Wednesday 27 July 9:30 pm

Three part drama based on the novel of the same title under the pseudonym Natalie Daniels. The miniseries is the powerful story of how two women become dangerously close when fate forces them together. Dedicated forensic psychiatrist, Dr Emma Robinson is not easily shocked. Then she’s sent to assess Connie who is facing trial for a terrible crime. Can Emma find out what happened on the night of the crime? Or what happened to turn Connie into a monster? As Emma tries to make sense of it all, Connie starts to show a searing insight into Emma’s deepest insecurities and begins to brutally exploit them. Their sessions become a complex psychological game with confusing and emotional undercurrents. As Emma tries to uncover the truth and learn what triggered Connie’s despicable behaviour, it seems that her attempts to see justice done may destroy her instead.

In August 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe died under mysterious circumstances.
Official cause of death: ‘probable suicide’.

The role of James Bond brings Sean Connery fame and fortune.
It also becomes his burden.
For a long time, the actor seeks to break away from his image of 007, to play more cerebral characters.
A slow and difficult emancipation, which he lives as a real quest for himself.

Yorkshire Ripper: The Secret Murders

Saturday 30 July 10:25 PM

The first episode explores the missed chances of Peter Sutcliffe’s early offending and presents evidence to show that his campaign of murder and mutilation may have started at least six years before his first acknowledged victim, with the killing of Mary Judge in Leeds in 1968. It also reveals how the attitudes of the time led the police to build a narrative for the killer as a man who hated sex workers, and by doing so, to discount victims that didn’t fit into this profile.
