The Crusaders: Fortresses Of Faith
Sunday 21 January 7:30 PM
At the end of the 11th century, the armies of the First Crusade descended on the Middle East. After the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, they controlled a Christian territory with shifting borders that they defended until 1291. There they built the largest and strongest fortresses ever constructed at the time. Each new weapon deployed in battle was systematically countered by an architectural innovation, considerably changing the form and structure of their castles.
Through the history of these five fortresses, and thanks to interviews with the greatest international experts and spectacular three-dimensional reconstructions, we will discover the secrets of these impregnable megastructures.
Her Name Is Nanny Nellie
Sunday 21 January 8:30 PM
In 1925 Australia’s Census declared Aboriginal people a ‘dying race’. The Australian Museum commissioned > three statues of ‘full blood’ Aboriginal people: a child, a man and a woman, exhibited as nameless objects to be studied. The woman was Nellie Walker, Irene Ridgeway’s great grandmother and director Daniel King’s great, great grandmother.
Now Irene is on a journey to retrace Nellie’s life and understand her times. But first she must find the other statue’s descendants and tell them of their ancestors’ statues. In this way Irene will honour these ancestors. This is a timely story by one of Australia’s most exciting directors; Daniel King, documenting his mother’s search. This is a profound personal window on a national story, with global consequences for colonial museum collections everywhere.
