Operation Philae.

At the end of the 1970s, one of the largest Pharaonic sites in Egypt risked being swallowed up by the sea.

It was thus ‘moved’ to an artificial island made to resemble the original - Philae.

This film was made for the 40th anniversary of this rescue led by UNESCO.

It will attempt to show how the ruins looked before the waters’ rise by precisely reconstructing them in 3D and 4K.

Discover the sanctuary in all its ancient glory.

Thanks to comparative archaeology - using images of monuments’ remains from the same period - it is now possible to imagine how even heavily damaged buildings looked like at the time down to the most minute of details – such as the colours and pigments of the bas-reliefs.

The battle for heaven starts on Earth

New SBS documentary The Kingdom premieres Thursday 8 June on SBS On Demand and airs 7.30pm Sunday 11 June on SBS

Walkley award-winning journalist Marc Fennell returns to the world of Pentecostal religion after running away 17 years ago. In a deeply personal documentary, Marc investigates how Australia produced one of the world’s most successful and scandal plagued megachurches Hillsong…and asks if this kingdom is crumbling then who will take its place?

Premiering Thursday 8 June on SBS on Demand and 7.30pm Sunday 11 June on SBS, feature-length documentary, The Kingdom, sees Walkley award-winning journalist Marc Fennell (Framed, Stuff the British Stole, Mastermind) step back into the Pentecostal world he ran away from 17 years ago, to uncover the seismic shift driving Hillsong’s decline, and to confront his own raw and complex childhood within the church.

Marc meets current and fellow former believers who expose the human cost of the Pentecostal juggernaut and explores how allegations of bullying, sexual assault and financial mismanagement have eroded Hillsong’s once mighty empire.

He confronts his own past spent in these churches, where he witnessed adults speaking in tongues, falling to the ground, and demons being thrown out of people. He explains why he escaped and why he’s remained largely silent about it until now.

Presenter and Producer Marc Fennell said, “The moment the rest of the world knows that you have this in your past, they don’t pay attention to whether you liked it, hated it or if you left. You get tarred with it. Many people have had their lives positively transformed by Pentecostalism. But there are also volunteers, staff, victims, and others who have been completely chewed up and spat out by modern megachurches."

Spanning a wild journey around Australia and into the USA, The Kingdom takes cameras inside the up and coming Pentecostal megachurches making the bold move into Hillsong’s home turf and asks: is this the competition for souls it seems to be and can they succeed where Hillsong has failed its followers?

The Kingdom will be subtitled in two languages, streaming on SBS On Demand in Simplified Chinese and Arabic.

Putin And The West

Thursday 1 June 8:30 PM

From the 2014 seizure of Crimea to the invasion of Ukraine, this is the inside story of a decade of clashes - as told by the Western leaders who traded blows with Putin’s Russia.

Featuring interviews from key players like David Cameron, Francois Hollande, Jose Manuel Barroso, and Petro Poroshenko, we hear how arguments broke out over whether to impose sanctions on Russia or send weapons to Ukraine. Ultimately, the West’s indecision sees Putin take control of Crimea. And even after all-night negotiations in Minsk to agree a ceasefire, Russian forces remain in Donbas. Putin, meanwhile, appears more confident than ever.

The episode tells the story of how, when Putin first attacked Ukraine in 2014, Europe’s leaders were bitterly divided over how to stop him.

After massive protests erupt in Kyiv and Ukraine’s president Victor Yanukovych flees to Russia, Putin makes the most audacious move of his presidency to date - sending troops into Crimea.

We go behind the scenes for the critical summits and fraught phone calls that follow, as the West tries to find some way to push back - particularly after the fighting spreads to Donbas and Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 is shot down.

Nothing Compares: Sinead O’Connor

image

Friday 9 June 8:35 PM

This documentary examines Sinéad O’Connor’s phenomenal rise to worldwide fame and how she used her voice at the height of her stardom, before her iconoclastic personality led to her exile from the pop mainstream.

Focusing on Sinead’s prophetic words and deeds from 1987 to 1993, the film presents an authored, richly cinematic portrait of this fearless trailblazer through a contemporary feminist lens.

The archive-led documentary features era-defining music videos and concert performances alongside previously unseen footage from this period.

The film is underpinned by a new interview with Sinead herself, in which she reflects on events in her own words, and from a present-day perspective.

Intimate first-hand contributor interviews add to the tapestry with additional insights from contemporary artists, musicians and social commentators introducing broader themes of Irish history, politics, and global activism, all the while reflecting on Sinead’s artistry, impact, and legacy.

The Mystery Of The Nazca Lines

image

Sunday 18 June 7:30 PM

It is one of the biggest enigmas of modern archaeology - a discovery which gave place to all kinds of theories, and which has not revealed all its secrets yet.

In Peru, 350km south of the capital, Lima, in the valley of Nazca, one can see from the sky gigantic figures representing stylised animals - a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider, a whale, as well as spirals and lines that are several kilometres long.

These figures were nicknamed the ‘lines of Nazca’, and much of its history is yet to be discovered.

Who drew these lines? How, and why? What is represented by these drawings and what is their meaning? From the first explorations to the most recent discoveries by archaeologists, this documentary aims to lift the veil on the mystery of the Nazca lines.

The Real Spies Among Friends

Monday 19 June 8:30 PM

The real story behind the hit drama series A Spy Among Friends starring Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce - this stand-alone documentary on Kim Philby and his fellow traitors who met at Cambridge reveals the worst spy ring in British history.

From Cold War Washington to contemporary Moscow, Beirut backstreets to the salons of Buckingham Palace, the story is as gripping as any thriller.

Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean, and Anthony Blunt were born to privilege, recruited as sleeper spies for Moscow at Cambridge University in the 1930s, and then insinuated themselves into almost every arm of the British secret state where they were able, without suspicion, to leak secrets to Soviet Russia on an industrial scale - their old school ties effectively blinding the British and US establishments to the traitors in their midst.

The film shows how from D-Day to the atomic bomb, they kept their masters in Moscow informed.

How despite finally being unmasked they never faced justice - instead slipping the closing net and escaping to Moscow or in Blunt’s case being allowed, to avoid a scandal, to carry on as a top adviser to the Queen herself! And how Philby had ‘no regrets’ for the victims he sent to their deaths.

Devil’s Confession: Lost Eichmann Tapes

Thursday 22nd June 8:30 PM

A few weeks before the opening of the Eichmann trial, transcripts of recorded conversations that Adolf Eichmann had had with a Dutch Nazi journalist, Willem Sassen, were mysteriously handed over to prosecutor Gideon Hausner.

The conversations were held a few years before Eichmann was brought to Israel by the Mossad.

During the trial, Eichmann tried to convince the judges that he was only a bureaucrat who carried out orders, but in the transcripts, Eichmann was found boasting and proud of his significant role in planning and executing the Final Solution.

For the first time, we will confront Eichmann with himself in full colour, revealing the hidden factors and motives that succeeded in hiding these recordings.
