This is a single episode documentary produced for French channel RMC Découverte. SBS is showing the English language version.
Season 1 finished its first screening in October 2020 so it’s been a long wait for the sequel. This season will cover mainly the construction and the opening of the Chatswood to Sydenham section, but is also expected to touch on works on other Sydney Metro projects, such as the Western Sydney Airport route and the Metro West route.
Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra - these rulers of Greek, Roman and Egyptian empires are three of the most iconic, powerful and brilliant leaders in ancient history. Their names are well known, but their stories have never been told like this before. To survive and succeed they had to be unique - strategic, ruthless and charming. Their lives reveal just what it takes to rule over an ancient empire.
Episode One: Alexander The Great
The greatest conqueror and general in history, Alexander the Great of Macedon built one of the largest empires ever seen in just 13 years. But as he continues to push east, Alexander not only has to contend with an increasingly powerful enemy, but also the loyalty of his men, and his own growing dark side.
Could climate change and pollution be responsible for the decline of the Mayan empire around the year 1000? The Mayan civilisation, which lasted for 20 centuries, experienced a golden age between 250 and 950 AD. In a hostile environment, deep in the Mexican and Guatemalan jungles, the Maya invented a complex solar calendar, built monumental pyramids, implemented an ingenious hydraulic system, and were also pioneers of permaculture. Yet the Mayan cities were abandoned at the height of their power.
Thanks to the work of archaeologists, Mexican, American, and French paleoclimatologists, as well as tools deployed by NASA, scientists now know that the true cause of the Mayan decline was a major drought. This discovery raises questions about our own society, and its future.
In 1943, a troop transport ship operated by the Italian Royal Navy called the Francesco Crispi, was attacked by an enemy submarine of the cost of Corsica. The Crispi sank within 16 minutes, taking 945 of the 1300 men with it. More than 70 years after the tragic event, researchers surveyed the wreck at a depth of over 100 metres in Corsican waters. Using a wire-guided underwater robot that can descend to a depth of 1000 metres, investigations have brought new information to light and provide answers to the families of the men who were lost.

Two crown princes, two empires and two completely different dramas at the end of the 19th century, fatefully linked to each other: Rudolf of Austria and Wilhelm of Prussia. Both princes suffer extremely from the role they have been assigned to: maintaining a world that is crumbling.
Directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes, this powerful documentary tells the story of two British soldier-camera operators who filmed the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II.
In April 1945, Sgt. Mike Lewis and Sgt. Bill Lawrie, from the British Army’s Film and Photographic Unit stumbled upon what they were told is a typhus hospital, about 25km from a small town called Celle in Northern Germany, by the name of Bergen-Belsen. Alongside the British Army’s liberating forces, the full horrors of what was going on inside the camp were revealed to them - and through their footage to the world - for the first time.
By immersing audiences in their eyewitness accounts through the footage they shot, married with audio interviews (recorded by the Imperial War Museum in the 1980s) describing their experiences in detail the film becomes an intimate and personal record of two ordinary men’s defining experience of the war - and, through them, of the profound trauma and tragedy of the Holocaust.
How did it come to a Prince of the realm wanting to leave the UK with his new wife and decide to live in America, and vow not to return? Harry’s recent relationship with the British press is now well known, his and William’s uncomfortable existence with the British tabloid newspapers is usually seen as starting with the death of their mother, Lady Diana Spencer. This series reveals the brother’s strained relationship with the tabloids started much earlier.
Drawing on hundreds of unseen press photos, eye-witness interviews and expert analysis, this documentary reveals how the seeds for Prince Harry’s exit from royal life - and the rift with his brother the future King William - were sown when their late mother Diana joined the family more than 40 years ago.
Venice, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, was born of a peculiar idea: the desire to build a city in the middle of the water.
Emerging 1,500 years ago out of the mud of a marshy lagoon, Venice has managed to rise above the sea’s challenges ever since. The city’s founders knew what they were doing: the water’s relentless threat is also the source of the city’s fortune and worldwide influence.
But it takes constant vigilance. Over the centuries, Venice has had to invent and innovate, finding new technical solutions to keep the city vital, vibrant, and dry without sacrificing its soul. How did such an unlikely architectural masterpiece as Venice happen in the first place? What pioneering techniques did the Venetians develop to make it work? And how will the centuries-old city keep up with changing times and a changing climate? More than ever, Venetians will need to deploy some exceptional solutions against the rising sea.
