Yep. The Perth numbers are truly extraordinary considering the very low numbers for the last two weeks. They obviously refuse to watch 9.
Nineâs PR department posted the regional audiences on its Twitter account this morning.
The national figures are incredible - and even more so for the doubles final. Unbelievable figures for a doubles final.

Perth people finally realised their TVâs go past 7. Big number for 9.
The last time I saw a prime ti e audience share greater than that was in the Sydney 2000 Games. That was pre-OzTam when Neilsen in the railings. I think the night of Cathy Freeman was a 70% or higher share.
Phenomenal ratings last night with Barty. Nothing more you can say really. The overnight metro is one metric. Thereâs all the BVOD to add and regionals as well.
This will be one of those once in a generation sort of results, AFL will never be able to outrate this, we are talking about a global event here.
The only thing that will beat this will be another Aussie in Ashâs position however they are probably it even born yet. Perhaps a Melbourne or Sydney future Olympics this century might have a chance also.
Not sure where the talk of not being likely to be beaten is coming from.
Reminder last yearâs AFL had a metro audience of 3,006,000; year before 2,979,000 - both night games. 2016 had 3,070,000 in the afternoon.
When was the last time Nine News Perth out-rated Seven Perth
âŠand yet it was less than last years Grand Final
And what does it being a âglobal eventâ have to do with Australian TV ratings?
If the AFL moves to a night / twilight grand finals permanently it will beat this nearly every year. Because the AFL grand final is easily the biggest event in Australia
Bear in mind, the last two AFL Grand Finals werenât meant to be at night, they were specially moved there due to coronavirus reasons. The first was also during a lockdown and the second a very long drought broken (Melbourne FC).
So Iâd argue extenuating circumstances, where theyâd otherwise have more likely than not been lower, if not much lower (look at 2017, 2018 and 2019 ratings - also NRL Grand Finals and SOO).
Echoing others, regardless of whether the AFL is back in day or night again, itâs highly doubtful to do 3m metro three years in a row, which has never happened before also.
So including regional and definitely the ceremony with the trophy, very hard to see Bartyâs Aus Open final being topped all year. Unbelievable result last night.
Somehow I can imagine a former member/infamous Seven fanboy crying his heart out over Nineâs astronomical share last night. He wanted the tennis so badly on Seven and never wouldâve seen this day to be so brutal
The AFL has had two grand finals at night time and they have both done 3 million metro. It has obviously been rare historically in an afternoon slot but if it goes 9 / twilight again then it is just as likely to get those sort of numbers again.
Even if it is back in the afternoon, the Swans or the Lions making the GF could push it passed 3 million metro again.
In regards to the AFL and last nightâs AO ratings comparison a few things worth noting.
AFL is very embedded in our culture so is pretty much always going to get 2M+.
The Womenâs AO final drew more than 3x that of last year with metro audiences. This truly makes it a huge event that got significantly more people watching than usual.
Also I think a big factor for the AFL ratings the last couple of years have a lot to do with 2 of the biggest states being in lockdown, including the AFLs biggest market. Thatâs many more people at home able to watch than a usual Saturday. Iâd be interested to compare how a night final does on a usual Saturday night when some people are likely to be out doing other things too.
Either way both will likely be the biggest television events this year.
Another way to look at this, is what was the last program to get 1.78m / 1.45m metro in just Sydney and Melbourne combined? Iâm guessing that Federer vs Nadal final in 2017? Before that probably many years. That is juicy stuff for Nine today from the two main commercial markets. (By comparison, AFL minimal in Sydney and NRL minimal in Melbourne).
edit
Okay, just realised that was a poor way of wording it, as of course Melbourneâs AFL numbers have been ridiculous, so immediately inflates the overall number by a long way. But I guess what I was trying to say is, when was the last time Sydney and Melbourne both had 700k+ audiences?
These figures are extraordinary either way you cut it, and this is only Barty vs Collins. Imagine if it was a Barty vs Osaka/Williams matchup, the ratings would shoot through the roof (could be well exceeding 70%+) share.
Nine well and truly have the tennis at the best time ever.
Absolutely smashing Channel Nine!
An interesting fine print from Nine (available on the 9 Ent Co website from their wrap release):
âWOMENâS FINAL: OzTAM Metro + Regional TAM data, 2001 â 2022, Seven Network + Seven Network Content Affiliates and Nine Network + Nine Network Content Affiliates, overnight data, please note Womenâs finals were not split out for 2001 â 2003â.
@TV.Cynic Does this mean in those years, Seven just coded it as âD13â or something (womenâs finals were played during day time until moving to prime time in 2009 - Maria Sharapovaâs victory in 2008 was the last and she was also the last not to drop a set all tournament like our Ash).
