The tennis gave Nine another massive win with its best network share since SOO Game 1 last year. Nine won all markets with Melbourne almost reaching 60% share. 9Go! was also the number one multi-channel.

Nine reports that NICK KYRGIOS v KAREN KHACHANOV had an average metro audience of 1.052 million

Chris Reason comfortably beating Georgie Gardner despite the tennis lead in and out.

7 were absolute fools to let go of the tennis.

And a very rare win for 9 News Brisbane over Kay McGrath on 7. Very unusual. Tennis lead-in doing well in Brisbane?

Without any BBL cricket, Nine smashed the entire night thanks to an epic Nick Kyrgios and Karen Khachanov match that ran past 11:30pm.

A huge share to Nine. Big numbers for the Tennis.

Would have liked to see the Australian of the Year Awards on the ABC to have rated slightly higher, but do understand it was against the tennis.

SBS World News made tbe top 20. Its numbers are on par to what it usually gets. But is this the first time it has made the top 20? If not, how many uears has it been?

Another huge night of Tennis. Look at Nine’s share! Nine would be over the moon to have a million viewers for 4 hours on a Saturday. I can only imagine how big Kyrgios vs Nadal is going to be.

It really has come back to bit them on the ass.

Surprised to see Georgie Gardiner lose her first night back to 7 in Sydney. Pete hasn’t been doing too well this week either.

Her first night back was Friday but your point remains true.

Sydney viewers not liking the new graphics, perhaps?

long comment warning

Live sport isn’t always the best lead-in, even though it’s made out that way. It depends how close the contest is.
If there’s not a good tennis match on, especially if it’s just studio babble right before 6pm, chances are The Chase on Seven might have more viewers, getting only the rusted-on Nine viewers for 6pm.

Isn’t this why during Rio 2016 Olympics (I think it was) Seven dropped coverage to 7mate at 5pm and aired The Chase which got series high ratings over 800k metro?

Although, compared to Seven’s tennis, when Seven News lost nearly every night in Sydney and even Melbourne, Nine News has done a lot better last year and this year, dominating Melbourne and winning some nights in Sydney (or losing just).

But with the ratings for Nine this week, I think small losses a few nights in Sydney for news is least of their concern!

The tennis feels a lot fresher on Nine as well.

I think I heard earlier in the week that attendance records have hit all time highs as well.

It’s the most attended Grand Slam in the world but there are a lot of factors for increased attendance that are far bigger than the tennis itself. E.g. the new Australian Open live stage that came in last year is like a music festival and gets a lot of younger people in for music. The beer gardens too are usually more packed than the tennis courts. They’ve done well to make it a must go to Melbourne event and not just a tennis event.

i flew down to attend play on monday and one thing they have done well is make it an event. Theres a lot going on thats not the actual tennis - from the live stage to the various bars and experiances - infosys is doing VR tennis where you can try to resturn a serve from rafa for example.

After seeing figures like that, Nine will be hoping the Kyrgios-Nadal clash will be a five-setter rather than a three-set fizzer.

So much better. It was really irritating on seven. They’re doing a great job. It makes it so special when it’s exclusive. It’s so premium. I don’t really watch much tennis but the big Aussie games I’m watching and some of my friends who don’t even know the rules or history of aus open are watching and they’ve never watched before as they are massive cricket fans but have disregarded the bbl due to the big match ups in tennis.

They surely have. I work at the tennis and on Saturday there were so many people there you could barely walk around the grounds. Most Rod Laver sessions have also been sold out.

I was at the tennis last Thursday and the line to see Kyrgios play was wayyyy out the door!
