The promise of a potential record-breaking AFL Grand Final audience wasn’t realised yesterday as the one-sided nature of the result was obvious from early on. The five-city metro audience of 2,179,000 compared to the 2021 final that drew 3,006,000 and the 2020 final with 2,979,000. The result was just below with the 2019 final on 2,197,000 when Richmond beat GWS 114-25. It is the smallest metro audience for a grand final since 1993 in preliminary numbers.

Melbourne had the biggest audience of just over 1 million down from 1.6m last year while the Sydney, Adelaide and Perth numbers were also down. Brisbane posted a small increase year-on-year.

The post-match program was notably low at 251,000 while the pre-match entertainment was well down on the last two prime-time finals.

Seven still managed to hold onto 544,000 for Seven News in Melbourne a record high for a 2022 bulletin.

Otherwise, with the game outside of prime time, Nine had a 6-point win. The NRL Second Preliminary Final delivered 748,000 with over 400k in Sydney and almost 200k in Brisbane. That compared to 810,000 in 2021. The Bledisloe Cup game on 9Gem also made the top 20 for the night.

ABC was third up slightly from the previous week as Death in Paradise was the top entertainment show of the day. 10 and SBS were both up 1 point week-on-week.

2021 GF numbers (held in prime-time):
SEVEN’S AFL: GRAND FINAL: MELBOURNE V WESTERN BULLD 3,006,000
SEVEN’S AFL: GRAND FINAL: PRESENTATIONS 2,667,000
SEVEN’S AFL: GRAND FINAL: ON THE GROUND 2,266,000
SEVEN’S AFL: GRAND FINAL: PRE MATCH ENTERTAINMENT 1,464,000
SEVEN’S AFL: GRAND FINAL: POST MATCH 1,186,000

The AFL Grand Final was about 27% down from last year’s Grand Final. I was astonished that The AFL Grand Final (which involved the Sydney Swans) was beaten by the NRL Preliminary Final in the Sydney market. How could this happen? Had Sydney Swans been more competitive, then the Sydney ratings would have been much higher.

The lopsided result and the four day long weekend in Victoria meant the ratings were well down. Could this be the last time the AFL grand final is held entirely in the afternoon? We will have to wait and see.

The post-match audience was so low as most of it was shown on 7mate, against the 6pm news in most states.

Think you’ve just answered your own question.

No surprises that the AFL Grand Final would win the day. The numbers aren’t as good as previous years, due to the one-sided score-line in the game. The numbers for the post-match segment are low because it only aired on 7Mate in 4 cities (only aired on the main channel in Perth).

No shock that Nine News won in Sydney over Seven News.

The various pre-match segments did well enough in their timeslots (Brunch, Countdown, Pre-match Entertainment and On the Bounce) all make the top 20.

NRL on Nine did well overall. While 10’s News failed to make the top 20.

Can’t really compare last year and this year since the time slots were different.

This years was slightly below 2019’s 2.2mill and that was also a blow out. I think 2018 drew 2.6mill in a close game.

So well down on 2018 but only slightly down on 2019 (the last day grand final)

Comparing 2022 vs 2020 and 2021 isn’t really valid since 20 and 21 were lockdown affected, so with more people forced to watch from home then, naturally those numbers would have been higher.

They were also different time slots too

I know this forum is heavily bias to Melbourne / AFL - and you guys think everyone in the universe loves AFL - which is soooo not the case…

could it just be the fact the NSW don’t like ball fumbles to begin with??
who cares if the swans are in the final… they don’t like it - period…

‪So when does Seven start suing the AFL, like they are doing with Cricket Australia? :joy:‬

They’ll move the grand final back to a night game next year given the low ratings this year

Yes and no, even though I prefer watching the NRL too, I can appreciate the occasion and the skills shown by the Geelong players even though it was a one sided contest.

And that there was only one NSW team, if you don’t like the Swans, you had to cheer for a team you didn’t know much about. Had it been Sydney vs GWS, it would have rated higher in Sydney. 375k is still not bad though.

That’s the AFL’s decision to make, not Channel Seven.

That’s AFL decision, but I think twilight would be the compromise

Last night’s ratings demonstrate the importance of a primetime final. From blasting the competition to losing primetime, I’m sure Seven would be fuming that the biggest event of the year couldn’t event win them the night/week.

The AFL Grand Final did worse this year, with the Geelong Cats smashing the competition from Sydney and the timeslot moved to 2:30pm. The AFL only had 2.1 million metro viewers compared to 3 million from last year, making it a 11 year low.

Unlike 2021 and 2020, Seven’s shares were way down, and even Nine won main channel/network. However, a good result for the AFL in all markets, outrating the NRL in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and even Brisbane. Ironically Sydney was the only market the AFL lost to NRL even know the Sydney Swans played. However they got a good 375k in Sydney, so pretty good in all markets.

During Seven News most markets shed a lot of viewers, with others (mainly Sydney/Brisbane) switching to Nine. Melbourne sticked with Seven most of the night with Border Security getting 320k, very high from its usual result. This could be mainly due to the NRL on the main channel in Melbourne, which is not helping Nine’s woes in Melbourne.

I agree. Getting a 60% share last year to losing to Nine this year should be worrying for Seven. If they could move the game I reckon that they would want another night time game like 2021 and 2020.

Wow, is this the first time 7 has lost to 9 on a grand final day?
