As previously noted, 5th highest rated grand final and highest since 2016, the number one show of 2020 so far.
Highest commercial share since Sydney 2000 and highest ever OzTAM share.
Shares for the other networks were obviously much lower than usual - not necessarily because fewer were watching, just as a share of the total audience.
Seven News Brisbane was affected by its 5pm start.
Sunrise and Today within 6,000 of each other with Sunrise live to all markets.

It was also the highest-rating non-Swans Grand Final in Sydney in 20 years.
ABC News’ coverage of the Daniel Andrews morning press conference (coded as The World This Week) did very well, especially in Melbourne.

As Knoxy at TVT said… no words. Out of this world!

Weekend Today had a rare win over Weekend Sunrise in Perth (given that wS was live nationally)
A 2.98 million metro viewers watching richmond v Geelong. This was highest since 2012 gf between Hawthorn-Sydney. I noticed channel 7 recorded a whopping 65.8% share. Wowee. This was the highest prime time audience share since OzTAM began in 2001.

And this is the reason why Seven wants a night GF so badly and rightly so. The ratings are astronomical and is practically every advertiser’s dream.

Even with Melbourne still in lockdown, a night GF would still do pretty well in normal times so it’s not surprising Seven have pushed for the GF to be held at night every year.

Personally for me I’m not sure if I would watch a night Grand Final on a Saturday normally (unless it was a team that I support). I watched it on Saturday as I was home but I’m not otherwise huge on AFL. I usually watch a day final but any normal Saturday outside of lockdown I’d probably make other plans and be out somewhere.

I’m interested to see how other states compared. Was the increase due to an increase in audience in Melbourne or did cities like Sydney/Adelaide/Perth have a increase as well on previous years?

AFL Grand Final audiences were also up in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth on 2019. The smallest increase was Sydney with 11%.

Well given there was a Sydney-based team participating in 2019 this is still an amazing increase.

Not sure that comparisons to last year are a good indicator though since it was the lowest rated audience since 1993 - probably because of the blow out score.

Here is a table showing the 5 most recent matches finals.

Year Result 5-city Sydney Melb Brisb Adel Perth
2016 Sydney (67) v Western Bulldogs (89) 3,039,000 534,000 1,446,000 370,000 318,000 372,000

Awesome numbers for the AFL Grand Final. Those shares are just amazing. No wonder why Seven has been pushing for a night final for so long now. Will see what happens in 2021.

Seven = hight shares since oztam began in 2001.

Ten’s lowest shares since 2001?

No - rated lower on a Saturday in May 2018 when the Royal Wedding was on.

2016 during day time got over 3m metro though?

Similar to this year’s, this was also a thriller, with the Bulldogs only kicking away with a few goals in the last ~10min of the game.

With this year only doing a smidge less than 2016 and actually rating higher than 2016 (even though that year was famously the Dogs’ 62-year drought although I guess only one Vic team), you could say it was thanks to the Sydney Swans - Sydney audience that year (although Adelaide was higher that year too).

Agreed. While the 2020 AFL Grand Final was the first ever to be played at night, going by Saturday’s ratings it’s likely that Seven, the AFL and advertisers will want a nighttime decider to become a permanent fixture of the nation’s sporting calendar.

Let’s be honest: The AFL Grand Final would probably be the #1 show of the year even if it was played at 3am on Christmas Day (not that I’m suggesting that should ever happen, of course)!

Maybe not the right thread to discuss this but I wouldn’t be surprised if they go for a more happy medium approach next time with a twilight match. So it starts late afternoon (when it’s still daylight to keep the traditionalists happy) but have it go into the evening. If it’s dark by half time they can then do a decent halftime show too. I thought the mid-game entertainment at night with Sheppard was really well done.

I note that Seven News Melbourne was only for a half hour, but still started at regular time and beat Nine News Melbourne by a great margin. The hype of the final really helped.

Those numbers are awesome. Great for all segments of the night and good to see almost all rating metrics in the report just flooded with AFL.

Yes, it was the Ten Network lowest share at 6.0% on that royal wedding night, but it was Ten’s Primary channel lowest on this Saturday, just.

Purely for the purpose of recording/discussing OzTam highs, lows, etc…

Are any of these all time lows (even channels I haven’t quoted)? I didn’t quote Network 10 as it was already noted that share has been lower, but not the main channel I believe.
