ABC absolutely blitzes the commercials with approx. 1.4 million viewing the combined ABC / ABC News coverage. ABC News ranks second - ahead of main channels of other networks.

Nine and Seven score below 400k with Nine well ahead for the early parts of the night in preliminary numbers. Split coding sees Seven’s late segment slightly ahead of Nine’s.

Seven’s network share gets a book from AFL while Seven News well ahead of Nine’s bulletin.

10 News makes the top 20 (unlike last election) but the coverage sees another low share for the main channel – down from last week’s 2.8 – at least ahead of SBS and 10’s own multis.

Wow 10 beat SBS! What an achievement!

ABC smashed it as expected. Is that the biggest share for the News Channel ever? That’s mightily impressive and well deserved. Seven and Nine were surprisingly close but the AFL really helped on Mate.

ABC just smashed the commercial networks with their coverage. Maybe Ten should have just stayed out of it and shown something else.

The numbers on ABC News are huge and weird that people prefer to watch things in SD.

Ten might as well broadcast a test pattern on Saturdays

Sky News probably not getting the numbers they would have liked as well

Easily the ABC’s biggest audience share this year.

SBS’s multichannels were slaughtered.

Sky’s election coverage did well in pay TV ratings, although live sport again dominated.

Without breaching the ratings agreement, how low was Ten’s election coverage audience/share @TV.Cynic ?

Would be interesting to see if 10 were competitive in any state? It was a much cleaner presentation than 7’s.

Ouch for Nine News Melbourne, I guess having Hitch present didn’t help. The gap was wider between Seven and Nine Melbourne than Perth.

Great result for ABC News, ABC TV and 7mate, with the former beating 7 and 9’s main channel, and 7mate beating 10 and SBS.

Not surprising. It was showing live AFL!

Ten just pipped SBS, talk about being in the middle of nowhere. May as well shown repeats for most of the night and saved their money, wonder if there was any significant demo gain for them?

Do we have any numbers on 10s election coverage?

It would’ve been lucky to get 20k viewers nationally. They probably had more viewers on YouTube.

I’m just guessing here.

It wasn’t about the numbers for them. Their news department deserve to try and do a coverage. They need to have some relevancy. They don’t produce output so 6 hours once every three years is good for their experience and credentials.

Outside of these circles, there are a lot of people who will still switch to Channel 2 on their remotes.

What a result for the ABC, absolutely killed the opposition.

It’s very likely more of an ingrained habit thing whereby because the ABC News Channel is well-established, a lot of people now instinctively turn to it when big news events happen.

Used to be that it was Nine that was the go to network for election coverage. It says a lot that they rate on par with Seven these days and the ABC is so far ahead. I reckon that debate debacle and Uhlmann’s defence of it may have cost them a few viewers. Uhlmann never did manage to fill the mighty big shoes of Laurie Oakes.

The last time Nine had the top rated election coverage was 2004. ABC started winning in 2007 - that year Nine was behind Seven.

Even more this year, it seems that viewers still trust the ABC news brand over commercials despite the numbers for the 6pm vs 7pm news. Also strengthens arguments that ABC should broadcast leaders’ debates.

Many people watch ABC due to no ads. Plus Antony Green gets straight to the point. I actually flicked over to 7 at one point and it was on a commercial break, I never flicked back again.

I asked a few people this and the reasons are much the same. We want numbers and results which is why we watch ABC. 7 and 9 is fluffy bullshit half the time.

When I flicked to 7 they had the LNP at like 69 seats. I mean seriously WTF.

Ha! I don’t know if it was a human deciding how many seats to give each party, or a computer program. But Seven’s analysis was a joke. One minute I saw 70. A minute later 66. Then a few minutes after that down to 50. You don’t call seats unless you’re certain of the outcome.
