The first night of 10’s A League coverage got off to a bad start with the coverage missing the top 20. While the game had some of the A League’s highest ratings it just made six figures and 10’s main channel share was stuck on 5%. Half of the game’s metro audience was in Sydney.

Elsewhere Nine took out a narrow win. Nine News just beat Seven at 6pm, ACA then had a very rare win at 7pm over ABC News while Nine’s line up had the preferred movies of the night.

For Seven, the Harry Potter franchise finished another productive run while Sunrise was 40k clear of Today at breakfast.

Grantchester on ABC was the top entertainment show on offer with a 5-week high seeing it make the top 5. Supercars were again the dominant feature of Foxtel’s line-up. Letters and Numbers was steady for SBS.

Bad start for A-League on 10, but its network share went up from last Saturday thanks to 10Bold.

Surely ACA Saturday has to be Nines best programming move in recent years.

It’s doing really well on Saturdays.

10 overestimating the popularity of Football for main channel coverage on a Saturday night?

It might be a slow build, but under 150k is very poor, but I also think they need a better lead-in for Syd/Mel and somewhat Adelaide viewers between the news finishing and coverage starting.

Running Jamie Oliver and Bondi Rescue repeats before hand probably didn’t help.

The lead in needs reworking for 10’s saturday night.

They should extend the news to 6:30 on Saturday (they do it every other bloody night). Then they can run Bondi rescue if they want. That way there’s better chance the viewer will stick around.

It’s still rating more than it did on FOX/ABC which was around 50k.

Disappointing start for the A-League, but the result isn’t all bad though. It performed better in the ratings than it had on Fox Sports and the ABC. For it to see an increase in viewers, on a Saturday night on Ten towards the end of the ratings season, isn’t a completely dire scenario and it’s something that Ten can build-on in the months ahead.

Paramount+ was actually one of the biggest trending topics on Twitter during the match last night (not for the right reasons, unfortunately), but the fact that it was shows that many people were tuning-in to watch the A-League last night.

It’ll take time. It’ll bounce back this coming weekend with 10’s soccer double header. The Matilda’s game in the afternoon followed by the prime time a-league game.

Not a good start for Ten’s first match of the A-League. I wasn’t expect huge numbers for it - but was expecting the match to at least make the top 20. Getting the numbers it got (under 150k) isn’t a good start. At least it got better than what ABC was getting for their 5pm game in previous seasons.

The 6-7pm slots for Ten wasn’t a good lead-in for the Game too. I do hope that the numbers for the A-League do improve in coming weeks.

Nine did well. Central Intelligence did well to come in at 16th place for a movie that started at 9.55pm and finished at midnight.

Football was always going to be a flop. It’s a niche sport. It was always a slow build for free to air. It’s more for subscribers to P+

Great results for 7’s multi channels. All performed extremely well.

Football isn’t exactly a niche sport in this country - it consistently has some of the highest participation rates of organised sport, but for whatever reason, it has never converted to support at a professional level.

10 have backed a dud - they might as well show a test pattern

How many multi channels does Ten’s main channel need to be beaten by before ViacomCBS realises Ten’s management is useless? Goes to show how out of touch management is with audiences when they overpay for a sport that has never rated on Australian television.

I half agree with you. They need new blood to run the place.
They didn’t really pay for it for free to air. It’s for P+ to drive subscriptions. I think they always knew that it would only rate 100k. They would’ve budgeted for it.

And almost made up for Seven’s easy loss in main channel (even though Seven News was neck and neck and Harry Potter was very close), guessing 7-7:30 when ACA was on and later night with “Venom” cost them (which is surprising as the sequel is about to be released and had an earlier 9:30 start compared to recent Saturdays).

Other networks’ m/c were also strong, as Cynic noted about Saturdays a few weeks ago.

Football isn’t a niche sport. Soccer is though.

Really…

If only 7 had persisted with The Latest on Saturday nights at 7.00 they may also have enjoyed the same success.

The soccer numbers are terrible for Ten.

They played the biggest shot in the locker in round 1 and barely got into 6 figures. They have two weeks and then its the BBL and the Ashes…the AFLW starting in January and then the tennis and almost half the season up against the AFL and NRL.

Realistically, the norm will be half of that.

Anyone who thinks this is what channel 10 signed up to is free to provide an expression of interest for a charming bridge I am selling.

The problem is it could only really air for half the year due to their AFL commitments.
