Data © OzTAM Pty Limited 2022. The Data may not be reproduced, published or communicated (electronically or in hard copy) in whole or in part, without the prior written consent of OzTAM. “Overnight” figures include “Live” (programs broadcast during the 2am-2am broadcast day) and “As Live” (programs recorded and then watched within the same broadcast day). “Consolidated” figures include Live, As Live and “Time Shift” (programs recorded and then watched within seven days of the initial broadcast).

The Australia Unites telethon last night failed to make much of an impact on commercial FTA viewing. Nine’s coverage up just made the top 10 with 233,000; Seven’s landed in 15th place with just 189k while 10’s missed the top 20 with just on half the audience of Nine’s coverage.

Nine’s coverage won in Sydney and Brisbane. Seven won in Melbourne and Adelaide. It was close in Perth with Nine’s coverage that switched to 9Go at 6pm just edging out Seven’s that was seen on 7Two.

Overall a disappointing performance with the 3-channel combined audience less than that for ABC’s Death in Paradise.

Seven had its first win of the week thanks to a better multichannel performance than second-placed Nine. 10’s network share was little changed though the main channel had its highest Saturday share of the year while the A League’s switch to 10Bold dragged that channel’s share down to less than half of the previous week’s.

ABC got a boost, with its best main channel share for any day of 2022 with two dramas in the top 5 shows of the night.

I definitely did not expect that.

The telethon was not the huge ratings success that many predicted.

All three networks will be disappointed with the ratings of Australia Unites.

NRL and the second cricket test between Pakistan and Australia dominated pay TV viewing.

Isn’t this 10s best Saturday performance for the year?

Nine News won in Sydney and Melbourne, with Seven News winning the other cities.

Interesting to see that “Death in Paradise” came third in the top 20 shows after the news bulletins.

Nine’s coverage of the telethon rated the best out of all three networks, but only won in Sydney and Brisbane where Seven won the others. I wonder if the coverage of the telethon on 7TWO outrated the ones on Nine and Ten’s main channel. Speaking of Ten, they didn’t make the top 20 at all in coverage.

Turner and Hooch did very well on 7flix, beating Bluey and many other ABC Kids shows. It was only outrated by Peppa Pig on ABC Kids in the multichannel top 20.

This really underscores Ten’s troubles - with the same thing on the three commercials, hardly anybody wanted to watch it on Ten, they’re clearly not in front of anyone’s mind for channel selection.

Why is this a surprise to anyone? Who wants to watch tv personalities answer phones and straight men kiss each other for money?

A lot of us - myself included - predicted very wrong for the Australia Unites. 233k for Nine, and 189k for Seven are low. Ten’s numbers did crack triple digits.

This will probably be the last time in a while that all three commercial networks will team up together.

Wowee. I thought that there will be many Aussies tuning into watch the coverage, but the Australia Unites Flood appeal failed to fire ratings. How could this happen? :hushed:

Obviously the money being raised is the main point - but this should really be a wake up call to all three networks.
Their personalities and networks don’t have the pulling power they once did to “unite” a nation.

This can’t be such a big surprise to everyone can it? This is what happens when the networks take their audiences for granted, they simply evaporate. It’s certainly not helped by the fact that we are exiting the most difficult period (across the board) in modern history

I’d rather watch paint dry then watch one of these telethons - the fact that it was then on three networks at the same time made the decision to watch literally anything else easy.

By the sound of it, it was an opportunity for Corporate Australia to pat themselves of the back at a job well done more then anything.

The numbers are also preliminary. The numbers we see are for the 7.30-10.30pm slot, isn’t it?

When consolidated numbers are in, will be interesting to see if it will be coded as one (7.30pm-12.30am), or it will come with two numbers - the ones we see above, and one for “late”?

The stars of Australian TV these days don’t have the people power they once did. Television habits have changed.

Long weekend across a lot of Australia and after being locked up for a large portion of the last 2 years people are not going to stay home to watch this (or anything for that matter) on a Saturday night. Should have been next Sunday night…or a week night maybe this week.

I hope not in that it means we don’t see another natural disaster like this one.

But I loved how all 3 networks came together for the broadcast

Yep… and this is largely the result of not having premium news or sports programming on the main channel. It will always be an up hill battle for 10.

It was a charity event to raise money for flood victims which was the main success for the night… not ratings or profit.

I swear some people have no idea what this is all about.

I didn’t say it will be the last time forever. I didn’t say the networks did it for profits. I said last time in a while. We don’t know when a big natural disaster will happen. It could be a while the networks join forces again, as the last time was 10 years ago (from memory?)

Yes, the night was to raise money and awareness, which they did a great job of. Raising over $25 million is awesome. But also, at the same time like what every other person said in here - that the ratings were on the low side.

Some people have no idea what this is about? I aint one of them. Nice dig though.

Agree - reckon there’s going to be a fair bit of soul searching and retrospecting being done not just at commercial networks but across the wider Australian TV industry about the state of it.

For a variety of reasons (some self-inflicted, some not), networks are now viewed by many viewers as vessels for content in that they’ll watch a given network for a particular show/s they like or because they have the rights to a particular sport/competition rather than out of a sense of loyalty to said network. Since viewers don’t have an attachment to network personalities like they used to, them being the drawcard of a telethon (as they were promoted for Australia Unites) isn’t the drawcard they used to be.

While big corporate donations are obviously important for any fundraising initiative, last night’s telethon focused too heavily on promoting those donations.

Perhaps the telethon would have benefited from the networks having more time to organise and promote it. However, I doubt after seeing the number it pulled that it would have done much better if it aired on another day.
