A big night of footy finals where Seven’s share of the audience was over 40% for the second consecutive Saturday.

Overall, Seven’s share was lower than the previous week with Seven News down 140k and the AFL number down 50k. Seven’s parallel coverage of the Royal Proclamation, however, did comparatively well to manage a top 10 ranking.

Nine’s double-header final saw the network up 6 points week-on-week, though Nine News suffered with its 4pm start. NRL in Melbourne managed 66,000 for the elimination final that saw Melbourne Storm exit the comp. That following Qualifying Final was the number one program in Sydney and Brisbane but could only manage 16k in Melbourne.

Without any sport, ABC, 10 and SBS couldn’t compete. It was familiar territory for 10 on a Saturday but for ABC one of its lowest especially the main channel share that was the lowest Saturday result of the survey.

ABC’s royal coverage made the top 20 but was uncompetitive at just 200k while for 10 a rare 6pm extension of the 5pm news managed to sneak into the top 20. ABC News 7pm recorded it slowest rated bulletin of the year.

Earlier in the day, breakfast TV numbers were well up on the usual Saturday but have fallen back from Friday’s massive +300k numbers.

Some of Seven’s royal daytime coverage just made the top 20 with an average 136,000 tuning in. ABC News channel also up to a 3.5% share in prime time.

On Foxtel, some big results for finals football as well.

The Storm-Raiders elimination final was outrated by Seven News in Sydney and Brisbane.

The AFL semi-final between Collingwood and Fremantle did well, but the Perth audience was lower than last week. Overall the five-city numbers were well down on last year’s semi-final (856,000, when Melbourne defeated Brisbane).

Nine News did crap last night, especially in Melbourne where it came behind Seven, Ten and ABC. Nine was tied in Brisbane with 10 while in Sydney was also 4th. Nationally Nine didn’t even get 250k viewers.

Got shunted on to 7 mate in Perth…pretty sure last week it was on the main channel and they moved the news to accommodate it

Give the timing of the NRL final, I assume that channel 9 moved their news forward?

Not surprising seeing it was on at 4.30pm.

Seven had a very strong win thanks to the AFL, News nd the rolling coverage of the Queen ELizabeth II passing. In Perth, 7mate was the number 1 channel for the night thanks to the AFL between COllingwood and Fremantle. The Perth figure would have been much higher had Fremantle became more competitive.

Ratings in the respective finals so far confirm why the AFL gets the big bucks in terms of TV rights compared to the NRL

16,000 for the Sharks v Cowboys NRL final would have to be a record low for a primetime show on GTV9.
It will be interesting to see if Nine persist with NRL finals on the main channel, especially now the Storm has been eliminated.

Sports dominated the list.

As for the Royal Coverage. Relatively on the low side as a whole.

Low numbers making out the top 20 (from 16th to 20th), with the Day coverage on Seven only having 136k viewers.

Geepers, that was on the main channel?

It was actually on at 4-5pm.

They would be nuts to continue to do that (aside from obviously the Grand Final).

Big mistake last night by Nine in Melbourne. The final should have been pushed to 9Gem.

Nine bumping the news for NRL in Melbourne was stupid beyond belief. Will also do long term damage to their reputation for covering major world news events.

They also have the NRL as a lead in to the 6pm News today. If the game happens to run past 6pm 90% of viewers in Melbourne will switch straight to 7 News.

The ABC actually didn’t even have a 7pm bulletin last night due to the Privy Council meeting.

Given the interest levels haven’t really been there in extended coverage, I’m not sure this will be accurate. Probably something MediaSpy might remember but not the general public.

As loved and admired as the Queen was, many don’t want to wallow in the sadness of her passing for hours on end and are content to catch up on events through the nightly news services. I’d agree it was a mis-step for the ABC and Nine not to run their main bulletins in their traditional slots last night. The ABC has a news channel for those interested in the Privy Council meeting at 7pm and Nine thought it more worthwhile to run an ancient B grade movie on a multi they regularly utilise when news and sport clash at 6pm.
