Rugby Union Rights 2025(?)-?

Nine screened a promo during the United Cup last night that mentioned both the Wallabies/Wallaroos and Super Rugby for their 2025 sport slate.

Yes, they have the rights for this year.

The British and Irish Lions tour will do well. Then the rights are up for grabs. Not sure nine has been a good fit. They do a half decent job but the priority is not there for them.

I think they’ve done very well - it’s never going to be a priority on FTA these days but when you look at the auxiliary content/shows they’ve created for Stan I think they’ve done much better than could be expected from Fox or anyone else.
It was always a Stan play first and foremost too which I think is worth remembering.

Its just a shame that the Stan Sports offering is not very compelling

Yeah that’s the major issue - needs a sport where the critical mass is there to come over.

Yes the problem with Stan is that the add on is so expensive. I got it for the Olympics but that’s it. Should just part of the overall package,

Based on the current offering, I agree - I’m not averse to paying more if they were to add more sports, but as it stands it’s very expensive for only a handful of events

They’ll make a play for all NRL rights - that’s their next big opportunity.

Rugby Australia closes in on new broadcast deal

What does the article say?

Sky NZ expected to downgrade their offer from $80m to $50m

Nine and Stan poised but not yet agreen for a new five year deal.

Not a surprise - Sky paid overs last time to deny Spark Sport which is now gone.

Herald Sun reported yesterday that senior officials from World Rugby are in Australia for the launch of 2027 Rugby World Cup at Darling Harbour on January 30.

That could mean an announcement on the renewal of Nine’s current deal with Rugby Australia won’t be too far away.

Can anyone summarize what the AFR article states?

Nine has offered $210m for the rights for the next 5 years, includes performance clauses (worth about $30m)

Deal excludes Rugby World Cups in the same period

The Australian-based rugby union teams have been put on notice by Nine. Hopefully this incentive will lead to them winning more matches (and eventually the Super Rugby trophy and - most importantly - Bledisloe Cup).

Going to call it early - wont make a lick of difference

Agreed - The problems in Australian rugby run deeper than Nine giving them a star chart.
