Brisbane’s iconic Caxton Hotel sold to Sydney Roosters billionaire owner Nick Politis in $50m deal

Billionaire Nick Politis has sparked a rugby league pub war after splurging $50 million to buy Brisbane’s famous Caxton Hotel, just doors away from the NRL-owned Beetson.

His latest purchase, the Caxton, puts the Roosters chairman in opposition to the NRL, which owns the Beetson Hotel (formerly the Gambaro Hotel) just a few doors away.

The NRL is spending more than $1 million to build a new sports bar at The Beetson, promising a ‘rugby league IMAX experience.’

New Zealand Rugby is considering legal action to protect the “Chiefs” name after the decision to call the new PNG NRL franchise by the same moniker.

Not only did the use of the name stir up officials from NZ Rugby, the black, red, and yellow colours associated with PNG are already in use at the Super Rugby club (Waikato Chiefs), The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Different country, different competition, different code. I think that’s a bit rich of them.

They didn’t seem to complain about the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL when Super Rugby have the Wellington Hurricanes.

The NRL play in NZ - so if they would promote matches as “Warriors v Chiefs” that’s a lot less clear of a distinction.

It was announced last weekend that Perth Bears would initially be based at WACA Ground in Perth.

Not sure if that means home games will be played at the WACA, or if it’s just a training base. Had always thought they’d play at HBF Park because that’s a rectangular stadium.

No it’s just their high performance centre. They’ll train on a new field over the road and then play at HBF. Unlike say AAMI Park, HBF is just a stadium, it doesn’t have facilities for a team year round.

NRL draw sends Rabbitohs, Sharks to Perth in 2026 for double-header as Bears warm-up

The Rabbitohs and Sharks are preparing to Perth for a double-header next season, as further details of the NRL’s 2026 season draw emerge.

In a massive opportunity for the NRL to win over Western Australian hearts and minds ahead of the arrival of the Perth Bears in 2027, the Bunnies and Sharks have been pencilled in to host back-to-back games on April 11.

With AI technology formulating the much-anticipated NRL season draw for the first time, the NRL are in the final stages of completing every crucial fixture.

At this stage, the Rabbitohs are preparing to play the Raiders, while the Sharks are expecting to play the Roosters.

The draw development has emerged in the wake of News Corp breaking the news surrounding the NRL’s lack of stadium availability in Sydney across the opening month of the season due to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

It is likely to force the Rabbitohs, Eels, Panthers and Bulldogs on the road to commence the season.

In the case of the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs, they face the opening three weeks of the season on the road because Accor Stadium is out of action until the Asian Cup final is played on March 21.

The NRL is expected to announce the 2026 fixture later this week, around the same time period as the AFL fixture.
