Good to see “Classic Hits” 2MC taking the top spot overall in the market, including being the dominant station in the 40+, whilst Star FM is dominant in the under-40s. In breakfast, 2MC’s Mark “Strawny” Strachan is #1 with 28.6%, followed by Star’s Nic & Jack at 25.5%. In mornings, Ray Hadley on 2MC dominates the timeslot with 36.7%, whilst John Laws on Radio 531/93.5 could only manage a 5.5% share. Star is #1 in afternoons & drive, whilst ABC Mid North Coast is #1 in evenings, followed closely by “The Greatest Years In Music” on 2MC.

##sca claim’s #1 and #2 stations in Port Macquarie

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) continues to be at the heart of the Mid North Coast with 2MCFM (#1) and Star FM (#2), the two most listened to stations in the region, according to Xtra Research’s regional survey results for Port Macquarie today.

80,100 people tune in to SCA owned stations in Port Macquarie weekly. Star FM is the #1 station listened to most by 24-54 year olds (35.2%) and by the under 40’s (55.7%). 2MC is the #1 station listened to most by the over 40’s (37.2%).

With 25 years behind the mic it’s no wonder 2MC’s Strawny is #1 in breakfast, claiming 28.6% station listened to most and Hamish & Andy are the favourite for the drive home with their #1 show picking up 35.1% station listened to most on Star FM.

Mid North Coast General Manager Mike Crowhurst said, “This is the first radio ratings to be undertaken in Port Macquarie area in more than 15 years. These fantastic results reinforce the strength of radio and that we are continuing to attract listeners with a good mixture of content that has a strong focus on local.”

So 2MC a Classic Hits station takes out the top spot in the Port Macquarie ratings ratings, yet in the Mt Gambier survey last week 5SE also a Classic Hits station could only take out 3rd place, beaten by Star & the ABC. It shows the Classic Hits format working very well in a area like Port Macquarie, not so well in Mt Gambier.

In Griffith, 2RG, which is also a Classic Hits station, also does well, in which it was a fairly close #2 behind Star, with just over 3% separating the two, as opposed to the 20% gap between Star & 5SE in Mt Gambier. In 2MC’s case, it broadcasts on FM, which is a bonus over both 2RG & 5SE, who are both broadcasting on AM.

Looking at the Port Macquarie ratings in general, it’s worth noting that RN does very well in the 55-64s, in which it was getting double-digit figures, resulting in 3rd place in that demographic behind 2MC & ABC Mid North Coast.

Hi Paul, what will the Super Radio Network do to be more competitive next survey?

It wouldn’t surprise me if Bill does a 2SM and pulls out of the Port Macquarie surveys after those numbers. He may as well not be in it.

judging by those ratings it seems turning the transmitter on might help? :grinning:

What station(s) come under the BOG group there?

Radio 531/93.5 FM: callsign 2PM, out of Kempsey (but with a Port Macquarie repeater) if I’m not mistaken

I don’t expect anything less from you as you are always highly critical of SCA’s assets in most places, most commonly for Mount Gambier…but: 1 survey after a 10+ year break and less than 12 months into the new format is not enough time to make judgement like that.

The underlying problems I see which provide the lower results in Mount Gambier is the fact the survey is conducted via telephone response (how many people do you know these days that actively use landlines and how many people do you know who avoid answering numbers they are not sure of due to telemarketers)…the other one surrounds the age group the station has attracted during it’s time as a GH station to then be flipped to CH, it’s going to shed audience figures that way.

You’ve got to remember in Mount Gambier that Jase the breakfast host jumped across from StarFM after a fairly long tenure on the other station, so he would have brought along some listeners who would now be now back on Star following the format change.

All in all, it needs some more time and another survey period to actually prove itself.

Will or should? No comment.

Fair enough points you make especially in regards to 5SE needing more time to prove itself as a classic hits station. I for one is just disappointed that 5SE changed formats because I liked the music variety backwhen 5SE was a Greatest hits station.

It’s Coffs Harbour’s turn to have its radio ratings released: http://www.radioitsalovething.com.au/RIALT/media/RIALT/Images/COFFS-HARBOUR-XTRA-RESEARCH-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT-WITH-CUME.pdf

Star FM is the #1 station with 23.5% share, followed by 2CS with 20.1%, ABC Coffs Coast with 13.6% & JJJ with 13.5%. RN rates very strongly with 8.6%, whilst BOG-owned 2HC can only manage a 4.4% share.
In the demographics, Star is #1 in the under-40s, 2CS is #1 in the 40-64s, whilst ABC Coffs Coast is #1 in the 65+. In breakfast, Star is #1, whilst in the mornings slot, Ray Hadley on 2CS attracts 27.5% whilst John Laws on 2HC could only manage 5.4%. Star is #1 in afternoons & drive, whilst ABC Coffs Coast is #1 in evenings. Interestingly, Grahame Gilbert on 2HC tied with “Greatest Years In Music” on 2CS, which both got a 9.5% share.

It’s interesting that 2CS is not as successful as 2MC is just down the road, considering that the latter is the #1 station down there. The main difference is that 2CS has the “Greatest Hits” format whilst 2MC has the “Classic Hits” format.

Déjà vu

It would be interesting to see the ratings for a BOG only market.

I completely agree, although there aren’t any SRN/BOG-only markets being surveyed this year…right?

Ummmm Dubbo & 2DU was #1 beating SCA’s Star 93.5 remember

Dubbo also has STAR, so it’s not a BOG solus market.

Seeing ratings for such a market like Tamworth would be interesting.
