> The best thing about Star is that - apart from the breakfast show - they’re always playing music (or ads!) every time you turn them on. Yes, it’s quite a repetitive playlist, but it’s much preferable to the talkfest on other stations.

I think that’s it. Star benefits from being an actual full time music station, without the talk shows which turn a lot of people off. Honestly Triple M’s rush hour is the biggest load of mind-numbing garbage on the radio.

Also on that same day, the Sunshine Coast ratings are out:

Triple J does very well in Gympie despite not having a local signal.

Interesting that ABC Wide Bay is listed in the Sunshine Coast survey but not the Gympie one.

It’s worth noting that since last year’s survey, all three Sunshine Coast commercial stations had changed owners, with Mix & Sea now owned by GSL Media Group (previously EON Broadcasting), whilst Hot 91 is now owned by ARN (previously Grant Broadcasters).

Been a while since I’ve been to Gympie but from memory the Wide Bay signals are fringe at best there too, so you’re right that’s quite the feat.

Poor old 4GY struggles, beaten by everything including even RN. And I can’t imagine Hot 91 would be too thrilled being beaten by Triple J either.

4GY has no hope in the Gympie market. Zinc targets older (music) listeners on FM with a great signal and mostly good music. 4GY has a pathetically weak AM signal with a mish-mash of super network talkback and some classic hits. It has no chance. Such a shame as the station used to really be something great back in the 80s.

Can anyone tell us why they’re not doing as well?

The playlist. With the popularity of Triple J they should go after this audience rather than mimic the well established Sea and Mix.

Problem is Grant / ARN are so rigid when it comes to their playlist for their Hot AC stations. One playlist fits all !!!

If they properly researched their competitive markets, Wollongong and Sunshine Coast their stations may perform better.

They win Gold Coast thanks to the weak offerings put up by SCA.

I would definitely break away from the network playlist on the Sunshine Coast and Wollongong, and go with a format closer to the original Nova on the Sunshine Coast to block Triple J and Sea.

If they do need a one size fits all, the Mix Adelaide or KIIS Sydney playlists, per which direction they would go - would both be an improvement over their ‘regional’ log.

I think the other challenge for Hot91 is that’s main competitors, Seafm/Mix are now more local than they were previously under SCA. This use to be Hot’s point of difference.

What’s interesting is Hot91 is the hub for some of the network shows and they’re not even eating there, so what chance would they have at rating elsewhere?

To be fair, the “Random 20” countdown is #1 among the commercial stations in its evening timeslot, outrating Mix & Sea. JJJ is #1 overall in that timeslot.

Interestingly, JJJ is #1 overall on weekends!! 😮

I checked the Commercial Radio’s Regional Surveys page at around 11am AEDT, and there was no new survey posted. I also checked Radioinfo sometime after during that hour & there was nothing there as well.

Anyway, to Townsville ratings, and aside from Hit & Triple M claiming the top 2 positions (24.8 & 20.3 respectively), Star slid 1.2 to 14.1%, whilst Power 100 went up 0.8 to 10.8%. JJJ went down 2.1 to 7.2%, whilst ABC North QLD went down 1.2 to 5.3%.

In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-55s, whilst Triple M wins in the 55+ (including taking top spot in the 65+ from ABC).

In breakfast, Hit’s _Cliffo & Gabi_ is #1 with 25.9% (+4.9), followed by Triple M’s _Pricey_ with 20.7% (+2.4), Star’s _Crystal & Anthony_ with 14.6% (-0.1), and Power 100’s _Archie & Bretz_ with 10.3% (+0.1). In drive, Hit’s _Carrie & Tommy_ dominates with 26.7% (+4.7), Triple M’s _Rush Hour_ with 19.1% (+1.6), _Will & Woody_ on Star with 13.2% (-0.5), and Power 100’s _Wildy_ with 11.5% (+0.6).

The “Other Stations” ratings is at 13.6%, down from 15.6% last year.

Next stop, Dubbo: [https://www.commercialradio.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/DUBBO-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT\_1.pdf?ext=.pdf](https://www.commercialradio.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/DUBBO-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT_1.pdf?ext=.pdf)

Zoo FM took out the top spot with 22.2% (+4.9 from 2019), followed by Triple M (formerly Hit 93.5) with 20.1% (-3.8 from Hit), 2DU with 14.2% (-8.0) & JJJ with 6.8% (+4.2). ABC Western Plains fell from 9.9% in 2019 to just 3.7% this year.

In the demos, Zoo is #1 in the under-55s, with Triple M topping the 55-64s & 2DU dominating in the 65+.

In breakfast, Zoo is #1 with 21.8% (+4.6) (unsure who does breakfast on that station at the moment, as they don’t have a website (😳)), followed by Triple M’s Alo Baker with 19.2% & 2DU with 15.2% (-7.0). In mornings, Steve Price on Triple M was #1 with 19.3%, just ahead of Zoo with 18.9% (+1.4) & John Laws on 2DU with 16.5% (-8.1). Triple M also won afternoons, as well as drive & evenings, with _The Rush Hour_ just 0.1% ahead of _Kate, Tim & Joel_ on Zoo on the drive slot.

The “Other Stations” ratings is at 31.3%, up from 21.8% in 2019. A fair chunk of that would be towards the community station DCFM 88.9, as well as towards Hit 105.9 from Orange & 2WEB from Bourke on 585AM.

Probably one of the only places where SCA can flip formats from Hit to Triple M and get away with it.
TBH I was expecting the figures for Triple M Dubbo to be a lot worse than that considering the dismal failure of the Perth switch over.

Bill’s first and only #1 against a major player!!!

Yes agree, Hit 105.9 Orange would make up a fair amount of the other, as it provides a reasonable fortuitous signal into Dubbo.
Original listeners of Hit 93.5 who don’t like Zoo or Triple M would have gone over to there.

2DU had been #1 against Star FM in the past, even as recently as 2016 (the 1st Xtra survey for Dubbo).

Here is the AC Nielsen survey for Dubbo from 20 years ago (2002):

#1: 2DU: 42.8
#2: Star: 18.1
#3: Zoo: 15.2
#4: ABC Western Plains: 9.4
#5: 2JJJ: 3.4
#6: Star Orange: 1.4
#7: 2GZ FM: 1.3
#8: Other Local ABC: 1.0
#9: 2RN: 0.7
=#10: ABC Classic FM: 0.5
=#10: Easy 1089: 0.5
=#12: 2PK: 0.2

Excellent, appreciate your analysis @TV-Expert in both Dubbo posts.

Should also be remembered that DMG would send an Albury staffer to surveyed markets to run a local workday 10-2 shift with a local tactic during then in a desperate attempt to distort the survey.

Before survey results were published, the staffer would be back in Albury and network programming from the Albury hub would be back on.

In 2022, current 93.5 owner SCA go from 9am with no local staff after breakfast.
