Random Radio

Indeed. SCA is saddled with debt. ARN/HTE is too.

97.3 FM in Brisbane has recently started playing some “Australian Music” blocks early on Sunday mornings, Monday and Thursday late nights too - most likely to ensure they meet their quota.

If there’s lightning near an AM/SW radio, it crackles.

If the lightning is near the TX site of an AM/SW station but not near the receiver, is it audible in the radio?

If the storm is close enough or severe enough, you can even hear some faint crackle on FM too.

No, it’s only if the lightning is in the vicinity of the receiver.

However, some AM transmitters get upset if there is nearby lightning and briefly go into protective mode. So you may hear the station drop out for a moment or two if there’s a storm near the transmitter site. Mains power fluctuations during storms may also trigger drop outs.

Thanks, thought that was the case. Getting used to the characteristics of SW reception in practice rather than theory.

If say 2CH/2UE wanted to try to sound different by becoming a western Sydney station and move the transmitter location to Blacktown would it be possible without breaching the rules of the licence?

Is it something they could apply for now that 2WS has moved to a Sydney wide station? This is only a hypothetical. In reality can a station just pack up and “move” their transmitter to Blacktown with the same licence so long as not too much overspill and declare themselves a western Sydney station. Much like 2WS did the reverse of.

I think if we gave SWR the opportunity to became a commercial station, it may have some success. My view is if 2ue adopted this format in a years time, when they change again, it may have success. Of course it would be better on FM but they do have DAB. (Assuming 954 move to Blacktown or even Prestons). Today the ABC covers “Sydney” from here as well as 2RPH with a little help from the repeater in kings cross and DAB.

I’m no expert but these sound like good ideas, and things none of the big operators are doing :frowning:

Somehow I don’t think we’re going to see any existing city-wide commercial broadcasters limit their coverage area to just Western Sydney anytime soon.

Personally I’d prefer it to see (or more to the point, hear) SWR Triple 9 remain a community station for their listening area. Although SWR has a fairly mainstream “70s to now” format during peak weekday timeslots, looking at their schedule during the evening & weekend timeslots they also air more specialist programing aimed at parts of their listening area that the mainstream commercial stations aren’t interested in.

As for the ABC broadcasting it’s AM stations for Sydney out at Prestons, haven’t they been doing that for many years?

Brilliantly simply yet missed by so many.

The tips are essentially about understanding radio, what its qualities are and harnessing them.

Thanks very much for sharing this @Brianc68

Just wondering in terms of listening to internet radio using a browser is there website or something where you can listen with highest quality possible.

I know in Tunein radio you can select different streams.

They’re back on air now. Stuart Cranney taking calls from listeners advising to listen online. Problem at TX site.

Problem with under resourcing by WIN Corporation.

The latest Sydney radio music crossovers has been unveiled: https://radioinfo.com.au/news/sydney-radio-music-crossovers

This is the first one since 2Day went with a more Hot AC format, and rather appropriately, there’s a comparison between 2Day & WS, in which there’s a 11.8% crossover between the two, with the former playing far more unique tracks than the latter. As for between Smooth & WS, the former plays more unique tracks than the latter, whilst unsurprisingly, Nova (as well as KIIS) plays far far less unique tracks than 2Day. It would’ve been nice to see KIIS against Nova instead of against Triple M.

Good to see that 2Day are trying to be different, however, the other afternoon I was flicking stations and heard more same, same, same. I was trying to avoid that latest overplayed track from Bruno Mars on Nova, so flicked over to 2Day who were also playing it at the exact same time and then when I flicked to KIIS it was the same song again.

I scored a hat trick but in a bad way.

Road blocking.

They do it on purpose, for the record companies.

Finally. Someone in the media is noticing how commercial radio is killing local artists and the Australian music industry.

HOW AUSSIE RADIO IS KILLING LOCAL MUSIC
In the Australian music industry, no relationship is more of a dance than that between commercial radio stations and the record companies. In the local music industry, it takes outright begging to persuade popular networks to take a chance on an emerging singer or band. But why are stations so reluctant to play Aussie music?

I was having a fiddle earlier today with a cheap ($20) BeIN clock radio that I bought at Big W a while ago.

Reception is surprisingly good, I managed to get i98 Wollongong in a null of News Radio (there’s no tropo about), so I’ve now discovered another nook and cranny in my flat in which to get non local stations

Though I also discovered an unusual harmonic on it… Star 104.5 received on 90.1 despite being 62km from the Tx. I haven’t found any other weird foibles on it (yet).

Ah well, that’s cheap radios for you I suppose.
