> No other stations have got it right including 4BH

I agree. I don’t understand why even Smooth and Gold/WS can’t do that. But yes 4BH should be doing it, they used to in the late 90s and early 2000s at their peak. And so did 4KQ in the early to mid 90s, although they didn’t really play the very latest stuff, but did play current hits after they had been out a few months.

But at least we have Breeze. I can listen all day because they do play 60s to the latest hits that fit the format (eg. Ed Sheeran, The Wkend, Harry Styles), and it just works.

Rebel is the same, they play 60s to current rock, although probably more 70s to current really.

Triple J 107.5 over-modulating to the absolute shithouse. Who’s in control there…

(I don’ think that’s going to improve the ratings 😛)

107.5 FM Melbourne. Overdeviation (some receivers may be more forgiving than others). First 30 seconds of the recording is Triple J, followed by Fox FM, to compare.

Waveform tells it all.

Whoever purchased my previous car(someone in Mackay ),my 2016 Mazda 2 that I traded for my CX-3,It still would have had local radio stations in the presets from Brisbane and the Gold Coast areas. My CX-3 had stations like Triple M Mackay/Whitsundays,Star 101.9 and 4MK on the presets until I changed them .Of course it has DAB radio too ,(My Mazda 2 didn’t )no good up there as no DAB there yet

I once bought a car that had Adelaide stations on the AM and FM presets.

Even though the car was purchased in Sydney and still had the original NSW plates on it!

The previous owner must have been in Adelaide for a while or something.

It’s good now (had been bad for a while, I just never bothered to mention it). They still love their treble overload, but Triple J’s sounded like that for a long time, so that’s nothing new.

Yes power outages up there, the DAB & WSFM was off most of the night, came back early this morning then went off again a few hours later.
Because the DAB Microwave link to Mt Badgally goes via this site, it’s off as well.

Kurrajong DTV site has been on backup generator since about 7pm last night & don’t know when it’ll have mains power again, there’s plenty of diesel up there in the tank, so have about a weeks worth of generator running, so it should be okay & stay on air.

There’s lots of power outages due to the strong winds across Sydney, but so far these 3 sites are the only ones that have been affected, with full normal operation times not know at this stage.

Yes I remember driving Brisbane to Sydney a lot in the mid 90s and loving the variety of local stations. But not since 2000 or so when networking really made it so boring.

Yes that’s the same for me ,it’s in the last 10-15 years that networking really took over and radio stations lost their individuality 😕

Same for me, except I also include Rebel. But if it wasn’t for Breeze, Rebel and 99.7 I doubt I’d listen to any terrestrial radio at all.

Ok, I have a weird question for the technical guys here familiar with radio playout software.

Can the pitch and speed of songs you’re playing be altered at broadcast?

I ask only because channel surfing this evening, Bay FM Redlands sounded like they were playing their music slower than normal. Two songs - Queen’s I Want To Break Free, then Fleetwood Mac’s Sara both played, and both sounded slow and of a lower pitch than normal.

It was clearly different enough to be audible to the ‘naked ear’. To test it, I even cued the latter track up on Spotify and played it just a touch behind the radio broadcast. Sure enough, within about 10-15 seconds, it caught the radio up then got ahead of it, and the notes were clearly higher. Even Shazam on my phone couldn’t pick the track from the radio broadcast.

Not saying a digital source like Spotify would necessarily be perfect either, but it sounded much truer than the radio broadcast did, and Shazam worked fine on that.

In the olden days, I’d have blamed a slow turntable or tape deck, but I wouldn’t have thought that to be an issue in the digital era. So, how would that have happened? Surely they wouldn’t be deliberately done, right?

Commercial radio often gets accused of speeding up songs so they can fit more songs in to stake a claim that they play “more music”.

There are apps you can get that will let you do this.
