Thanx; this was from my logs after the show was recorded. As far as Ottowan, 2SM gave it a few spins at the time, but by June 1982 it was gone, never to be heard again, until it was played on Steve Parsons Lunchtime Countdown on Wave FM during 2001.

Can’t do 1982 this year on my show as we air ‘The Timezone Top 40’ which does 1982 every week…

My second last show for starter FM this week, thought I would put on my Rod Muir hair due, his Reebok shoes, and pretend I’m running Triple M in the early 80s, for at least an hour anyway, here is a throw back to how Triple M sounded back in 1982 1983. My friend will be doing my slot from 10am to midday tomorrow, and then my Rock of Ages starts at Midday.

That 2MMM 80s style log is amazing. So they did actually play Journey in the early 80s? Unfortunately I wasn’t around to enjoy it.

The Rock of ages actually started at 11am . Listened to it now. Great stuff.

Thanks for asking, I’ve replied in the Starter Free Media thread mindful of not side railing this thread.

So with my final show recorded, this is the playlist for my program this week, celebrating 30 years in broadcasting, I’ve basically played my favourite song from each year, from 1992 to the present. A surprise given your penchant for dance pop but I am fond of this one too. A forgotten Triple J hit. Might give it a spin on the Conga this week.

Also like the Puff Johnson tune. I associate it with Eagle FM as I recorded them playing it back in 1997 or 1998. Wish I kept the (rare) recordings of my DX from back then.

Got sick to death of commercial radio by 1998, and thus tuned to the local ABC and ABC Newsradio from about 1998 onwards. So heard a lot of interesting stuff on ABC 97.3 Illawarra and ABC 702 Sydney, including this Badly Drawn Boy song, alongside other artists like Jimmy Little, Lior, Five for FIghting, KT Tunstall, that fantastic version of Mad World from Gary Jules, and so forth. Heard the Lions share of this on the old ABC when there was Angela Catterns for Breakfast, Sally Lone for Mornings, Tony Delroy in the evenings, and Shamus Hall overnights.

At one of the Glenbrook record fares, I picked up a hand full of the old ABC Airplay discs from about 1999 to 2006, about five volumes. Still have to clean them up, It’ll be interesting to see what’s on there. Around 2004 to 2005, ABC went through a regime change, probably an effect of the Jonathan Shire system shock, and the stations program material seemed somewhat watered down, the ABC has really suffered since the wrecking ball of michelle guthrie so the local ABCs no longer have a line of staple artists in their playlists.

I find ABC Tasmania and ABC Northern Territory play more music than the other states; might be worth tuning in. As others have said on here, it would be great if the ABC set up an adult music station like BBC Radio 2.

I’m up on the Central Coast for a few days & have been listening to Coast FM, a local community radio station that carries a “Classic Hits” format during its regular programming at 6am-6pm weekdays, as well as at 6am-12pm Sundays.

Here’s a typical hour of them from early this afternoon. Since their playlist is not on Lava, I’ve sourced it via an old fashioned way: by listening to it for a whole hour.

Coast FM 96.3 - Central Coast, NSW
“Classic Hits”
Friday 3rd June 2022 - 12-1pm AEST

“The Heat Is On” Glenn Frey
“Sundown” Gordon Lightfoot
“Tobacco Road” The Nashville Teens
“Seasons In The Sun” Terry Jacks
“Jet” Paul McCartney & Wings
“Wild Wild Life” Talking Heads
“Kodachrome” Paul Simon
“I’m A Boy” The Who
“Do You Know The Way To San Jose” Dionne Warwick (part of this month’s music feature, ‘Around The World In 30 Days’)
“Life Is A Highway” Tom Cochrane
“Neutron Dance” Pointer Sisters
“All By Myself” Eric Carmen

As you can see, it’s a pretty decent “Classic Hits” station that would have a strong following on among the older radio listening audience in the region. Naturally, it is musically very different from the local commercial radio stations, and is therefore a good local alternative.

Some of the community stations are excellent. Sydney is spoilt for choice with some great stations, such as Eastside (on DAB it sounds brilliant), Northside, FBI, Koori, 2SER, SWR and others.

Melbourne too has some excellent community stations such as PBS and RRR, Kool n Deadly.

The sub-metros in Melbourne are probably better than Sydney’s overall (apart from SWR). Plenty Valley FM, Yarra Valley FM and 3MDR are my favourites. And 3RRR and 3PBS wipe the floor with FBI and 2SER. Sydney is the capital of electronic music and Melbourne does rock and roll; since I am a rock fan I’m more than a little biased.

One place that needs a decent generalist community radio station is Canberra. Valley FM are pretty much limited to the Tuggeranong bowl, since they transmit from a studio near Wanniassa. As for 2QBN, too much country music for my liking! And 2BRW of course does not penetrate into Canberra except on the peaks.

@TV-Expert: I know you love doing logs the old fashioned (nerdy) way

03 - Ashford and SImpson - Solid (single edit) (Capitol)
04 - The Commodores - Nightshift (Motown)
05 - Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F (MCA)
06 - Vitabeats - Boombox (Hot)
07 - Boy Rocking - The house is shaking (CBS)
08 - Simple Minds - Don’t you forget about me (Virgin)
09 - Eurogliders - We will together (CBS)
10 - Paul Young - Everytime you go away (original single mix) (CBS)
11 - Madonna - Crazy for you (Warner)
