Radio History

It was during the Coodabeen Champions sunday night program that was also broadcast in Perth and Townsville

I miss when Triple M was a music station.

Official Opening Broadcast from 8HA, Alice Springs, 1971. Including the Minister for the Interior, Ralph Hunt, in his opening speech referring to the station – twice – as “H8A” :grimacing:

And the station’s first commercial, for Coca-Cola.

And in 1978, guest star Denise Drysdale:

Great find. I always thought the HA callsign was odd, and didn’t flow well after the 8. The first letter needed to be a vowel. Even 8AL would have rolled off the tongue nicer. 8AS was probably out of the question. If it had launched a few years later in the “double letter” period of popularity 8AA or even 8CC (for centre) would have worked great. Come to think of it, 8HA is one of my least favourite callsigns.

I think 8HA was for Heart of the Alice

The ABC had 8AL.

Triple M should bring this ad back, Walk This Way still gets played today, it hasn’t aged at all.

Did some fiching at the WA State Library today.

This coverage from the “Geraldton Guardian” in July 1991 about the launch of 98FM against the incumbent 6GE was interesting.

Also interesting that there was a lot of 98FM ads, but none for 6GE / 6GGG (that I could find).

“Albany Advertiser” radio guide from April 1986 for ABC (6AL) and Rainbow Radio (6VA).

Only thing I could find from around the launch of HOT FM in October 1997 was this ad

96.5 hits the Triple G Spot.

Should’ve gone with that tagline.

I never knew there was a Triple G there. There’s still Triple G Gunnedah. Anywhere else?

92.5 Gold Coast started out as 4GGG, after converting from AM 1197 as 4GG in 1989.

That’s not the same 1197AM that Switch Brisbane now uses?

Just the same frequency. They moved it up from Gold Coast to Brisbane and reallocated it as a community licence after 4GG moved to FM.

July 1987 from the Bunbury “South West Times”.

This I did not know… prior to the Radio West era, 6TZ was known as “Golden West Radio” and owned by GWN.
