Radio Data System (RDS)

Who’s the other one? I can’t recall anyone else using it.

I’ve seen people from Europe say some Hyundai, Volkswagen and Skoda radios can decode LPS and even RDS2 images. Don’t think Australian versions of these radios can though.

It’s Radio Skid Row.

I suspect the images would be coming from a internet based source, I know people have got tripped up on this before.

I did an in depth AI research on this topic some months ago, digging deep & couldn’t find any manufacturer with a tuner to decode RDS2 & LPS or have it to market yet & don’t know of any broadcaster in Europe broadcasting with RDS2. That said info on the internet maybe lagging. Would be good to get a hard confirmation from this from the European dxers or vehicle manufacturers.

Last I checked there were no RDS2 decoder chips being manufactured. DTS AutoStage, on the other hand, is in a fair few high end cars. Same for RadioPlayer, RadioDNS, and Gracenote.

Hi Anthony. Awesome work. Thanks very much for writing this very informative, enlightening & I feel much needed article in terms of being timely in regards to the number of platforms now in the marketplace.

I appreciate your posting of the link here. :slightly_smiling_face:

4MBS has a log jam of older members and in their hierarchy that manage to keep the station almost frozen in time. They were there in the 90s and still in the 20s.

Doubtful the audio will improve until they die and cease being members or end up in care, listening to their own Silver Memories radio.

Finally! Thanks for the report @AustraliaRadio232 It is good news for Mitsubishi drivers.

But lets hope the new PI code doesn’t (possibly) cause a switching issue with a couple of the Melbourne DAB+ stations (as remote as it may be).

@ozbark Looks like ABC Classic Adelaide got rid of the scrolling PS:

A good move, but wish they (and every other Classic FM) would do what Sydney and Brisbane do and just go with a static PS of Classic

That would make far too much sense. I suspect some aspects of the ABC’s RDS programming pretty much determined by the regional BAI Chief Engineer or visiting tech rather than being tightly overseen by ABC technical dept. I note that they (in Adelaide) are now using the correct EU PTY for classical music rather than the North American PTY code of 15 which (was) translating poorly as ‘Other Music’. It should be PTY code of 14 (Serious Classical) across all of the ABC’s ‘ABC Classic’ FM RDS sites.

Don’t forget the GC is now set to Classic too

THANK YOU!!! Someone else who wants it to Classical

Very strong opening to Victoria and South Australia today so there is a chance I picked up something that might fill in missing info for RDS. Any requests?

Signals strong enough to overcome JJJ/Zinc
