Radio Data System (RDS)

Thanks for doing that :slightly_smiling_face:

@4TAB-1008kHz It appears we should now be linking the Radio TAB Qld RDS entries
on the RDS List now to the 4TAB audio link on the www.skyracing.com.au website.

BTW a question for you;
Will RDS appear in the future for the SA outlets such as 95.5MHz Loxton?

If an existing tx is needing replacement, and the replacement purchased has RDS functionality, then yes.
As far as a network wide program to enable them all, no.

Thanks. Appreciate the feedback.
Are any of your SA or NT FM transmitters with RDS at the moment?

Katherine has it, but it’s not switched on yet. That’ll happen on the next visit.

Not sure it’s mentioned yet but Bridge FM on the Northside of Brisbane now has RDS.

RDS RT on Bay 93.9 has been stuck on the same song since yesterday.

Thanks! This appears to be quite new AFAIK. Need a decent localised tropo event to pull in further Bridge FM RDS details from the QLD webservers. But for starters:-

I’ve turned my yagi south and only briefly picked it up earlier, the cold westerly isn’t helping much.

Thanks for that. :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s not helping…tropo is non existent across most of the country atm & for the foreseeable tropo forecast.
Cold winds not so nice outside either down here.

I entered the PI code into our worksheets.
I’ll flag @4TAB-1008kHz here as 4TAB & Bridge FM are sharing the same last 2 digits in the PI code meaning there is potential for unwanted frequency switching between the stations, more likely between the 4TAB outlets in Beaudesert & Bundaberg outlets during tropo & Bridge FM.
Bridge FM are using the suggested CRA PI code of 4997, but as we know it’s a flawed system CRA are using with PI code selection.
4TAB PI = 4897, Bridge FM PI = 4997

Good reception from my nearby location.

I know they 4TAB got in first, but I wonder whether something 4008 or 44AB might be a better substitute?

It would be a huge amount of work for Radio TAB to change PI code as the same PI code is also used by the Sky Sports Radio network in NSW. Additionally 4008 is unsuitable as the second digit being a zero in the PI code can prevent station swapping to another of their Radio TAB/SSR FM RDS outlets, that’s completely unwanted. 2nd nibble of zero is usually reserved for single transmitters (solitary outlets).
It would be much much easier for Bridge FM to change their PI code to this one: 4098 which looks good to me. 4998 perhaps being my 2nd choice. The 3rd & 4th nibble (digits) of 98 are free nationally AFAIK.

I really wish ACMA could administer the PI codes nationally.

Agree.
the system made by CRA is a joke.

Thanks for the tag. I’ll give them a bell during the week and get it sorted.
It is a bit difficult choosing a correct code when CRA’s advice isn’t correct.

Can absolutely confirm this was an issue in the Forester today @4TAB-1008kHz - although in my part of the world it generally worked in your favour, flicking me to 89.7 when I was tuned to 99.7.

And also, how bad is their signal these days. Driving around even elevated parts of the western suburbs I struggled to get RDS-level reception, or even listenable stereo, in the car.

All good. :slightly_smiling_face:

Which is why I created the Engineering Worksheet 14 within the Australian/NZ RDS Sheet & associated sheets so techs & engineers could choose with a reasonable level of confidence a suitable RDS PI code that’s not going to conflict with other broadcasters due to the failure primarily of the ACMA & to a lesser degree CRA to manage PI allocations. The PI code of 4098 should/will be okay for Bridge FM to use from all available intel & evaluation within worksheet 14 of the RDS List.

Great feedback. Thanks for that.

Out of curiosity @tamago_otoko does your Forester tuner have a REGION button in the RDS settings? If a RDS tuner has a REGION button (many vehicles don’t) this might prevent the station flicking where the PI code is the same except for the second digit (nibble) & where the 2nd digit is numbered anywhere from 4 to F, if the Region button is set to ON. If it is set to OFF that’s when the station switching occurs from reports. Apparently if the 2nd nibble of PI code is digits 1 to 3 then switching happens irrespective of the REGION button setting. But that said, with varying vehicle tuner firmware one can’t be absolutely sure of above behaviour, per design.

Yes it does and it was turned off. Labelled ‘Regionalisation’ in the menu.

Didn’t seem to be switching this morning. Not sure if they’ve made a change or just dumb luck at my end.

Finally got a full RDS decode, had to drive all the way to the William Jolly Bridge before it came in though. Easily the worst signal of the submetro community FMs in Brisbane now.

low RDS level and no stereo on joy 94.9 at the moment.

Its pretty average. From the chat I had with them the other day, they’re sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Good TX sites on the peninsular are expensive. There just isn’t any mountain or economical places to transmit from. I suggested they look elsewhere in their license area and maybe get an experienced planner on the case.
