Race Around The World Statement

Race Around The World contestant Kate McGuinness has asked the ABC to share the following statement on her behalf which the ABC supports:

“The sense of humour featured in each of my films on the Race Around The World program is farcical. In no way was it my intention to promote violence. My writing is cartoonish and always satirical. Unfortunately, jokes do not land with everyone. Its purpose was never to be taken literally. I apologise to anyone I’ve offended.”

The ABC Ombudsman is independently reviewing audience complaints in relation to the 12 July Race Around the World episode in accordance with the ABC’s complaints handling process. The ABC won’t be commenting further while the review is in progress.

Kate’s skit was unacceptable, but to remove that particular episode from iView (that’s how I interpret Gina Rinehart’s legal notice) would be unfair to the other five contestants who had shot and produced the videos while in their respective countries.

They could just remove the offending section and replace with a message on screen for that time.

The ABC’s managing director Hugh Marks has apologised to Gina Rinehart and the material subject to the complaint has been removed from ABC platforms.

The ABC doesn’t seem to understand that nothing will placate these people. No apology, no removal.

Meanwhile Daily Mail commenters now threatening violence towards the filmmaker with no moderation in sight. Nobody even commented on the film until 2 weeks after it aired. Australian media is broken.

Very close scores at the end. Elliot did well especially since he was disqualified one week so received no points that week.

Constable’s main hope is that people watch his films and care for the people and their complex situations.

This sentiment is shared by the competition’s People’s Choice Award winner, Jayden O’Neill, who took out the top spot in the ABC’s audience poll.

“The reason you make content is because you want the audience to take it in,” O’Neill says.

Jayden’s favourite films to make were the same ones the audience loved, including his week one entry from the Philippines, which detailed fishers using illegal methods to feed their families.
