Over the next four years, the hole will be reshaped into an underground station known as Burwood North, one of nine along the 24-kilometre Metro West rail line between central Sydney and Westmead.
It will be turned into a 60-metre pedestrian link stretching from the station to the southern side of Parramatta Road, meaning commuters will avoid having to cross the arterial route.

The Victorian government will continue its free public transport program for an additional month, after which fares will be reduced by half for the remainder of the year.
Unless this is being paired with extra carriages on v/line, free regional travel shouldnât be extended. $11 is a fair price to pay for a 2hr+ trip if it makes the difference in getting a seat.
The free travel has been a bit of a mess on regional long distance services- the capacity is simply not there to keep up with demand. It was already struggling to cope when it was $11, which was already exceptionally generous as it was (I remember it used to be $30-$35 at one point).
Many people around here (Albury) actually would prefer the price to go back up a little bit- to around $15 or $20 each way, as that would ensure more seats for travellers who have a genuine need to go to Melbourne (such as medical appointments), rather than the opportunistic, induced demand we see now.
Half price public transport on the metro network is a great move though- itâs crazy that under the current fare model it costs the same to travel from say, South Yarra to Flinders Street, as it does to travel from Southern Cross to somewhere like Albury or Swan Hill.
The inner regional V/Lines (Bendigo, Ballarat etc) are pretty fairly priced at $11 though- I think thatâs about the sweet spot for them.
