Unfortunately not so good on Day 2 - buses replacing trains between Hawksburn and Caulfield in the middle of peak. Outside of the tunnel but causing some major issues.
Power supply failure at Armadale with overhead a mess. Cooked.
Reports of people fainting in carriages due to no AC and doors locked.
Sunbury line is still suspended between West Footscray and Footscray as I post this (10.50pm AEDT) and this suspension will continue until last train tonight. It will be interesting to see if regular service will be able to resume in time for the morning peak.
The power failure at Armadale demonstrates it was a big mistake to dismantle the crossover tracks at Caulfield station as part of Metro Tunnel project. In a major incident such as todayâs, Pakenham and Cranbourne trains would have been able to cross tracks at Caulfield and follow the Frankston line to Flinders Street.
Yeah I think thatâs a major oversight. Itâs always good to have backup options if youâre having a âBig Switchâ. Hopefully it gets ironed out soon.
Also it would help if they had options to run footy specials on the Sunbury/Pakenham/Cranbourne Lines to Richmond
Numerous cancellations this morning due to trains out of position.
I have genuine concerns we will see repeated OHLE and associated power failures on this line, especially in warmer weather. The HCMTs are very power hungry, and with high train frequency and high loads, expect more of what happened yesterday, especially around Malvern and Footscray. IMHO.
If itâs not addressed, it will be an utter lemon and people will have no confidence to use it, IMHO.
OâFlaherty also made an apology to affected commuters when he had a phone chat with Sharnelle Vella and Bob Murphy on ABC Melbourne breakfast today.
That does not cause a sagging piece of un insulated copper wire to sag and get tangled in the pantograph. Heat causes that and thereâs passive devices which use gravity to tension the wire to nominal standards depending on environmental factors.. Yes theyâre power hungry but thatâs not the issue here.
Itâs happened many times before, even with trams getting tangled.
Cable sagging is made worse by high current loads. Itâll be interesting to see if design shortcomings, material defects, or mechanical failure in the compensating mechanism was/were a factor.
Despite the expansion of Sydneyâs transport network through new and upcoming metro lines and light rail, there are areas in the city that remain transport deserts.
In other words, make a suburban rail loopâŚ
That Liverpool to Bradfield line - which should be a heavy rail extension of the T3 not âmetroâ - should be the first built - thatâs such a crazy missing link in the network.
Except they canât make it a single loop - the Tallawong to Bankstown section is incompatible with the St Marys to Bradfield section
Parramatta - Epping should never have been cancelled, and Strathfield - Hurstville (interchanging with the Bankstown and East Hills lines) should also have been built long ago. These days they could probably start it out of Rhodes and people going to the city from there could interchange at Strathfield or Nth Strathfield (to Metro West)
Melbourne would be exactly the same - the western section of the SRL is an incompatible airport linkâŚ
Yeah. I can remember plans for it being suggested 40 years ago with suggestions for stations in Roselands, Greenacre etc. Alternatively, I think a link from Hurstville to Bankstown could be considered.
Strange theyâve only shown the Bankstown to Kograh section instead of the full proposed line length to Westmead, and the envisioned Metro West extension to Randwick is also absent
I think it can go all the way to La Perouse, making use of the wide centre median of Anzac Parade.
Reminder to one and all - we are New South Wales, and we make massive errors on a regular basis.
We wonât see a suburban rail/metro/rickshaw loop. At least not in our collective lifetimes.
London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway have become publicly owned in the UK, bringing the country one step closer to a simpler, unified rail system under the umbrella of Great British Railways.
Through this move, the two components of West Midlands Trains (WMT) are becoming publicly owned: London Northwestern Railway, which operates services between Liverpool and Birmingham and along the West Coast Main Line to and from London Euston, and West Midlands Railway, which serves destinations throughout the West Midlands via Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill.

From the Sydney âDaily Mirrorâ 10 October 1988.. there were once plans for a second monorail in the Sydney CBD, servicing Ultimo, Broadway and Central station.
I do miss the old monorail, it was great view riding around the city from up high.. but didnât help that (compared to light rail) the cabins were comparatively small, and were always crowded.
Seems like a lot of the comms and social media from the first week of full metro tunnel opening is celebrating the frankston line back in the city loop.
Isnât that a mixed message, just spent $12b and 10 years on a project to remove 3 of the busiest lines from the city loop. How are users of cranbourne, pakenham and sunbury interpreting those messages? Seems the metro tunnel has triggered a new found appreciation for the loop.
