PTV Network New Zealand & Independent Radio Service (Patrick Te Pou Broadcasting Ltd)

Thanks for your feedback, @Trains_and_Sports.

@Trains_and_Sports My dream, NZ based TV network’s breakfast programme, Sunrise, runs at 6am every weekday and is preceded at 5.30am by Early Sunrise. Both programmes are simulcast across both channels, i.e. the network’s main channel and a 24-hour news channel in which I created.

There’s also a half hour highlights version (Sunrise Extra) on the news channel at 11.30am and 9.30pm (NZ time) on weekdays, plus an extended hour-long version (The Best of Sunrise) on the weekend, so that viewers across NZ could catch up on the headlines, events and interviews they missed or anything they might like to see again.

It is intended that the theme tune for PTV News would be the same as Australia’s Nine News (formerly National Nine News) and Papua New Guinea’s EMTV News - “Cool Hand Luke” (2000-05 version).

And it is also intended that the PTV Sport theme would be the same as Nine’s Wide World of Sports from Australia (2001-04).

EVENING VIEWING ON PTV IN MARCH 2023

Here’s a sample of the evening programmes PTV Network New Zealand’s main channel, PTV (as a fictional broadcaster), in March as the new Super Rugby Pacific and NRL seasons commence. (Please note that additional information regarding the Super Rugby Pacific and the NRL is in brackets.)

SUNDAY

Local talent quest/variety series ASB New Faces kicks off PTV’s Sunday night viewing at 6.30pm.

Based on the the British show of the same name, ASB New Faces features the cream of upcoming entertainers - including singers, dancers, musicians and comedians - who, across three region specific competitions, are given the opportunity to showcase their talent in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond. Contestants have the chance to win $2,000 per heat and $20,000 for a regional final. The regional finalists (first, second and third) then go through to the national final where they compete for $200,000.

Walter Neilands (formerly of Sticky TV fame) returns to host ASB New Faces 2023, along with a panel of well-known Kiwi personalities as judges (TBC).

At 7.30pm, tune in to PTV Network’s flagship current affairs programme - 60 Minutes. A team of US, Australian and New Zealand correspondents, including Garth Bray, Mark Crysell, Guyon Espiner, Sarah Hall, Paula Penfold and Melanie Reid, join forces to provide a blend of hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news. It’s ‘television’s finest hour’.

And at 8.30pm, settle in for the biggest blockbusters with Sunday Night at the Movies. Titles expected to screen include F9: The Fast Saga, Free Guy, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Godzilla vs. Kong, House of Gucci, Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Suicide Squad.

MONDAY

The week on PTV begins at 5pm with an all new round of Wheel of Fortune - more puzzles to solve, more money and prizes to win and the same old hosts (Matt Gibb and Diamond Langi).

After a break for the regional news (at 5.30pm), the national news with Daniel Faitaua (at 6pm) and Campbell Live with John Campbell and team (at 6.30pm), Sale of the Century’s back at 7pm with more quick-fire questions, ‘Fast Money’, luxury prizes and even more of Mike Puru and Evana Corric as hosts!

Evana Corric - once a fan and, later, hostess of Sale of the Century. Photo: Supplied.

And right after Sale, there are new rounds of old favourites like The Neighborhood (at 7.30pm), Bob Hearts Abishola (at 8pm), NCIS (at 8.30pm) and NCIS: Hawai’i (at 9.30pm) to keep viewers engaged on a Monday night.

TUESDAY

PTV’s ‘Kiwi Variety Hour’ on Tuesday night starts with the return of Give Us a Clue in its classic, half hour format (unlike the real-life version as seen on TVNZ) at 7.30pm, but with Corin Dann (from RNZ’s Morning Report) rather than Paula Bennett as host and Kimberley Crossman replacing Hilary Barry as captain of the women’s team. Tom Sainsbury stays behind and continues to lead the guys on Give Us a Clue.

We all know Meg Mansell from The Edge and now, she moves into television by hosting New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos (at 8pm) which is really New Zealand’s (and the world’s) funniest home videos. There are prizes to be won here and there’s also a chance to compare the quality of our foul-ups with those of our favourite tourists.

Then at 8.30pm, it’s two hours of drama and action with all new episodes of FBI and FBI: International (at 9.30pm).

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday night on PTV means compelling viewing, beginning with two hours of New Zealand content.

Dulux Home Front is at 7.30pm where, once again, Hamish Dodd, Shelley Ferguson and Peter Wolfkamp team up to provide practical tips and helpful advice for your next DIY project. Getaway follows at 8pm with more holiday destinations from across the country and overseas, although Laura McGoldrick and Nickson Clark are joined by a new host - radio personality Marty Hehewerth (well known from his days on The Edge).

If you’re a great fan of Top Gear then don’t miss this! Introducing Mobil Car Show (at 8.30pm), a new motoring magazine series. Veteran sports broadcaster Stephen McIvor and New Zealand motorsports legend Greg Murphy are joined by former Silver Fern Storm Purvis as they team up to road test new cars and provide information about buying, selling and maintaining cars.

And at 9pm, the hit fly-on-the-wall series Border Patrol sees the men and women of the Customs Service and Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) Biosecurity aiming to prevent pest plants, animals, drugs, weapons and pornography filtering through the country’s borders.

There’s a new round of CSI: Vegas at 9.30pm where Marg Helgenberger joins the cast and reprises her role as Catherine Willows (from the original CSI series).

THURSDAY

Thursday night on PTV starts at 7.30pm with a brand new consumer affairs programme, Target, where Mitch McCann, Kaitlin Ruddock and Ximena Smith investigate your consumer issues whilst keeping you up to date with the latest scams and advice.

Young Sheldon’s along at 8pm with brand new episodes, followed by more drama and action with Queen Latifah in The Equalizer (at 8.30pm).

And last, but not least, Kiwi drag queen Anita Wigl’it (from RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under) goes live and loud with an hour of celebrity interviews, comedy, live music, games and trivia on her very own ‘Thursday night live’ talk/variety show, The Anita Wigl’it Show (at 9.30pm).

FRIDAY

When the week is over, the weekend is about to begin on PTV.

Friday night starts with the return of Palmers Garden Show at 7.30pm where, once again, Carly Flynn and her team of experts (Andy Ellis, Lynda Hallinan and Justin Newcombe) give inspirations and provide practical advice and information to everyone from first-time gardeners to those who have been gardening all their lives. Carly also drops in on the who’s who of New Zealand celebrities, giving viewers a look at their gardens.

Then, get ready for even more heart-stopping Super Rugby action as 12 best sides from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Pacific Islands play home and away for Super Rugby glory. KFC Friday Night Rugby (at 8.30pm) has full delayed coverage of the week’s top game as the new Super Rugby Pacific season kicks off. And after Nightline, there’s full delayed coverage of hardcore rugby league from the latest round of the new NRL season on dtr Friday Night NRL.

(If you subscribe to PTV+ Premium and add an extra $20 to your monthly subscription, all Super Rugby Pacific and NRL games are available ‘live and on demand’, as do other major local and international sporting events. Live coverage of the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific and NRL seasons are also available via PTV Sport Select, a linear television narrowcasting service for pubs, clubs, TAB outlets and other commercial outlets nationwide.)

SATURDAY

PTV’s Saturday night viewing starts with two hours of top-line entertainment (from 6.30pm).

There are more local towns, more prizes and more surprises as Jason Reeves (from Coast) and Matilda Green (winner of The Bachelor NZ 2015) team up to host an all new version of the iconic travelling quiz show, It’s in the Bag, then Matt Gibb and Diamond Langi invite famous New Zealand celebrities to spin the wheel, solve word puzzles and win money and prizes for home viewers on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (at 7pm).

Ben Shephard follows at 7.30pm with Tipping Point: Lucky Stars where three British celebrities take on the tipping point machine in the hopes of winning 20,000 pounds for charity.

That’s followed by two new US dramas from 8.30pm - East New York and Fire Country.

East New York stars Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York - a working-class neighbourhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval. Keep an eye out for Jimmy Smits (from LA Law and NYPD Blue) as shrewd veteran two-star Chief John Suarez!

He doesn’t count on being assigned to a fire in the rural town where his life first began. In Fire Country (at 9.30pm), from the producers of Grey’s Anatomy and CSI, a young convict (played by Max Thieriot) signs on to battle California’s wildfires in exchange for a reduced sentence.

And following the late news for 15 minutes, there’s more celebrity chat, live music, the very famous Red Chair game and plenty of laughs from Graham and his guests on The Graham Norton Show, which we’ll be seeing just a few hours after it screens in Britain.

Dedicated to @Trains_and_Sports and @Damo, who used my inspirations and created their dream TV networks. What do they think (especially @Michael_Eccles & @greenpea)?

Corin Dann? Interesting choice. Still, anyone is better than Paula Bennett. And - this will probably get me banned from NZ, let alone MediaSpy(!) - I’ve never got the hype over Hilary Barry. Always found her WAY too overrated.

No I’m with you on that one

She was good when she did 3 News, but ever since she joined TVNZ I have gone right off her. Very, very annoying now.

The fact that you have managed to introduce multiple themed nights across your network is impressive @PaddyTePou although how would you replace a program like Sale of the Century or The Anita Wigl’it Show when their seasons end? Would you create/produce new formats to occupy those slots and create a rotation of programs or would you do something different over summer/non-ratings?

Good question, @greenpea. Most local programmes in primetime are shown in two 13-week seasons throughout the year, with midseason replacements to follow.

Midseason replacements, suitable for screening during the winter (13 weeks), include:

Blankety Blank
With the help of a celebrity panel, contestants must fill in the missing words of statements and phrases. Comedian Rhys Mathewson hosts a panel game show and replacement for New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos in its usual timeslot (Tuesdays at 8pm).

Candid Camera
As Celebrity Wheel of Fortune takes a break for the winter, radio personality Megan Papas and comedian Tim Batt team up to host an all new version of the classic hidden camera comedy show, where they put unsuspecting members of the New Zealand public under the spotlight in odd but funny predicaments. This show is intended for screening on Saturdays at 7pm as a midseason replacement.

Face the Music
Well-known media personality Clint Randell hosts a quiz show where, each week, three contestants use their musical knowledge and their memory to put names to classic hits from rock and pop music. This show is intended for screening on Tuesdays at 7.30pm when Give Us a Clue takes a break.

The Krypton Factor
Mitch McCann (from Target) hosts an all new version of television’s toughest quiz as contestants match mental and physical abilities to see who will become New Zealand Superperson 2023. Timeslot TBC.

Money
Presented by Ingrid Hipkiss, Money is a series about finances and financial management. This show is intended for screening on Wednesdays at 8pm when Getaway takes a break for the winter.

Play Your Cards Right
Comedian Ben Hurley hosts a family game show and replacement for It’s in the Bag (usually aired on Saturdays at 6.30pm) in which two couples attempt to predict the outcome of survey questions to gain control of a row of oversized playing cards, then determine whether the next card drawn is higher or lower.

Really Living
Hosted by Wilhelmina Shrimpton, Really Living is a series on health and lifestyle choices available in New Zealand with reports on fitness, injury prevention and management and new developments in health and wellbeing in magazine-style format. Field reporters include former Olympian Sarah Cowley Ross, rugby league legend Wairangi Koopu and TV journalists Kimberlee Downs and Nats Levi. This show is intended for screening on Wednesdays at 7.30pm when Dulux Home Front takes a break for the winter.

The Tami Neilson Show
A ‘Thursday night live’ talk/variety show and replacement for The Anita Wigl’it Show (usually aired on Thursdays at 9.30pm), hosted by country music sensation Tami Neilson. I describe it as ‘a blend of heartwarming stories, live musical performances, games and surprises, combined with Tami’s unique style of country music’.

Towards Tomorrow
Jared McCulloch, Thomas Mead and Emily van Velthooven present a magazine series and midseason replacement for Target (usually aired on Thursdays at 7.30pm), featuring the latest in scientific and technological breakthroughs from New Zealand and around the world.

Grand Designs NZ (as seen on Three and, later, TVNZ in real life) would go to air Fridays at 7.30pm when Palmers Garden Show takes a break.

On the documentary side, we at PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) have a commitment to producing and commissioning a number of New Zealand documentaries that reflect our society - our heritage, our cultural makeup, and issues that are relevant to us as New Zealanders. Later in the year, Neil Waka would introduce a season of informative homegrown documentaries as part of the Inside New Zealand series - Wednesdays at 8.30pm.

Five-nights-a-week game shows like Sale of the Century and Wheel of Fortune are on air for no more than 44 weeks of the year, taking a break over Christmas. It is intended that summer-friendly versions of Face the Music and Play Your Cards Right would screen weeknights over the summer holiday period (replacing both Sale and the Wheel).

The local talent quest/variety series, ASB New Faces, is on air for 40 weeks of the year and when the show finishes, a natural history documentary strand (Our World) would fill the 6.30pm timeslot on Sunday nights.

MOCK FREEVIEW CHANNEL LINEUP

@Damo @Trains_and_Sports Here’s a real-life Freeview channel line-up (numbered 1-24 - see below).

I liked the way that Freeview is offering (e.g. Three, Bravo, Prime, eden, Rush and HGTV, plus one-hour timeshift services for Three, Bravo, Prime and eden), but what if PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) became a reality by incorporating the best of Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery NZ as separate companies? And what if some Freeview channels moved across?

PTV Network’s main channel, PTV, would replace Three on Channel 3. Shake would take over from Bravo on Channel 4. You’d find GEM on Channel 5, Bold on 8 (replacing eden), Peach on 9 (replacing Bravo +1), Bubble on 10, Rewind on 13 (replacing Three +1), Home on 14 (replacing Rush), Taste on 15 (replacing Prime), MAX on 18 (replacing eden +1) and MAX 2 on 19 (replacing HGTV).

Meanwhile, both Whakaata Māori (Māori TV) and Te Reo would move to Channels 7 & 17 respectively with TVNZ 2 +1 on Channel 12 and TVNZ DUKE +1 on Channel 16.

BBC World News was due to become available via Freeview on Channel 20 but due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I created the PTV News Channel and allowed it to broadcast on 20 if it becomes a reality. Staff at PTV Network New Zealand wish to refer to the PTV News Channel as “Channel 20”, “Freeview 20” or the “News Channel” if they can. Al Jazeera would move to Channel 24 (UHF only).

The PTV Network linear suite comprises 12 channels which are free-to-air on the Freeview platform (UHF and satellite), including six general entertainment channels, two lifestyle channels, a kids channel, two 24-hour music channels and a 24-hour news channel. Each channel would have its own target demographic and programme format, with a complementary programming strategy that maximises viewer choice and advertiser opportunities.

PTV Pop Up - a trio of occasional or pop-up channels on 21 (replacing Prime +1), 22 & 23 respectively - is designed to give viewers the opportunity to see extended coverage of sport and special events (e.g. Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Australian Open, Wimbledon, National Agricultural Fieldays etc), as well as ‘extra’ programmes that can’t be fitted on any PTV Network channel.

REWIND SCHEDULE 2023

Below is a typical week’s schedule for Rewind - PTV Network’s general entertainment channel devoted to ‘the greatest television of all time’ - in 2023.

As always, I created Rewind as a channel for nostalgia buffs; it aims to provide them with a schedule of classic dramas, classic comedies, classic entertainment and classic children’s programmes from television’s golden age.

Many of the content is digitally remastered and in HD, offering all Kiwis a brilliant viewing experience.

PRIMETIME VIEWING

Rewind offers themed nights of programming in primetime (from 7.30pm weeknights and 7pm weekends) which include: Monday: Classic British Drama; Tuesday: Classic Crime; Wednesday: Classic British Comedy; Thursday: Classic Action; Friday: Stateside Classics; Saturday: Classic Entertainment; Sunday: The Best of British. The content is grouped with similar attributes to give viewers an expectation of the kind of programming they find during the evening.

FUN AND GAMES

Rewind offers a three-hour block of classic US game shows for mid-morning viewing - weekdays from 8.30am. Many of those shows have not aired on New Zealand television before.

LUNCHTIME DRAMA

Rewind offers two hours of classic US dramas for lunchtime viewing - weekdays from 12pm.

CLASSIC KIDS TV

Rewind offers a dedicated block of classic children’s programming from 6-8.30am and 3.30-5pm on weekdays, and from 6am until 12pm on weekends.

OTHER PROGRAMMING

Rewind’s four strands (primetime viewing, “Fun and Games”, “Lunchtime Drama” and “Classic Kids TV”) are complemented by other programmes that fit in with the channel’s objective to provide its viewers with classic television entertainment.

Loving the line-up there bro. And if you ask me I think it’s a better lineup than both Jones channels IRL.

Thanks, @Damo. I describe Rewind as a free-to-air equivalent of both JONES! and JONES! too which, in real life, are available as subscription channels on Sky.

EVENING VIEWING ON SHAKE IN MARCH 2023

Here’s a sample of the evening programmes PTV Network New Zealand’s youth skewed general entertainment channel, Shake (as a fictional broadcaster), in March.

SUNDAY

Sunday night on Shake begins with a double helping of The Simpsons at 6pm, followed by new rounds of The Great North (at 7pm) and American Auto (at 7.30pm).

Then comes an all new version of the classic 80s sitcom, Night Court (at 8pm), starring Melissa Rauch (better known as Bernadette Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory) as Judge Abby Stone, the daughter of the late Harry T Stone (originally played by the late Harry Anderson). She follows in her father’s footsteps by presiding over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and attempting to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics. Keep an eye out for the legendary John Larroquette as Dan Fielding from the original series!

Set 30 years after Dr Sam Beckett (originally played by Scott Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished, follows a new team that must restart the project hoping to understand the mysteries behind the machine and its creator. Following a new round of La Brea (at 8.30pm), Raymond Lee stars as Dr Ben Song in an all new version of the original sci-fi classic, Quantum Leap (at 9.30pm).

And if you’re a die-hard wrestling fan, there’s more ringside action with the Superstars and Divas of WWE SmackDown (right after Quantum Leap).

MONDAY

The week on Shake begins at 6pm with ‘your nightly dose’ of America’s favourite dysfunctional cartoon family, The Simpsons (i.e. seven nights a week at 6pm with a double episode on Sunday). They’re followed by The Big Bang Theory (at 6.30pm), then more cartoon laughter with the Griffins on Family Guy (at 7pm).

My dream network has a reduced focus on reality television, but The Masked Singer USA kicks off Shake’s Monday night viewing at 7.30pm as more celebrity performers wear costumes to conceal identities. One singer is eliminated each week and unmasked. Small hints are given for the viewer guess along.

If you used to be a fan of Mr Roarke and Tattoo then be sure not to miss the all new version of a 1970s classic, Fantasy Island (at 8.30pm) - starring Roselyn SĂĄnchez (from Without a Trace) as Elena Roarke, a grand niece of Mr Roarke from the original series. People who walk in with a desire, but end up reborn to themselves through the magical realism of Fantasy Island, and among them are Daphne Zuniga (from Melrose Place), Cheryl Hines (from Curb Your Enthusiasm), James Denton (from Desperate Housewives) and many more.

A brand new US crime drama, Alert: Missing Persons Unit (from executive producer Jamie Foxx), is at 9.30pm and follows Nikki Batista (played by Dania Ramirez) after she joins the Philadelphia Police Department’s Missing Person’s Unit (MPU) to help other people find their loved ones at the same time that she is looking for her missing son. Watch out for Scott Caan (from Hawaii Five-0) as Jason Grant.

After that, the Griffin family are back with a brand new episode of Family Guy - just hours after it screens in the United States.

TUESDAY

Tuesday night on Shake begins at 7.30pm with a new round of The Voice USA (express from the US) where contestants are selected through public auditions and trained by a panel of four coaches who guide and critique their performances in an attempt to discover America’s next great voice.

There’s a brand new local comedy series, Not Even (at 9.30pm), which follows a group of twenty-something Māori and Pasifika stumbling their way through the city of Wellington.

And at 10pm, Pax Assadi hosts Pulp Comedy - featuring a cream of some of New Zealand’s best known and successful standup comedians who perform in front of a live audience at Auckland’s Q Theatre.

WEDNESDAY

The Voice USA returns with an hour-long results show (express from the US) at 7.30pm on Wednesday night.

Then, Shake brings the big screen to your comfy couch with Wednesday Night at the Movies (from 8.30pm). Blockbuster titles straight out of Hollywood such as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Miami Vice, Inception, The Three Musketeers and Gone Girl mean all the entertainment and no expensive ticket!

THURSDAY

If the new consumer affairs programme, Target, is not necessarily your cup of tea then Shake has plenty of laughs on a Thursday night.

Last seen on TVNZ, a new round of Have You Been Paying Attention? is at 7.30pm where New Zealand’s best and brightest comedians showcase their current affairs prowess unpacking the hot topics of week: politics, sports, pop culture news and international affairs to test just who’s been paying attention
Host Hayley Sproull and regular guests Urzila Carlson and Vaughan Smith are back.

Superman & Lois return with brand new episodes at 8.30pm, then a new superhero series makes its debut.

Bruce Wayne is murdered and his adopted son, Turner Hayes (played by Oscar Morgan), forges an alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies. As the city becomes more dangerous, these mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviours, known as the Gotham Knights (at 9.30pm).

FRIDAY

It’s Fri-yay! Friday night on Shake becomes US sitcom night.

Lopez vs Lopez (at 7.30pm) is a working-class family comedy about dysfunction, reconnection and all the pain and joy in between, starring father-and-daughter duo George and Mayan Lopez. That’s followed by new rounds of Call Me Kat (at 8pm), Ghosts (at 8.30pm) and Grand Crew (at 9pm).

Walker’s back with more drama and action at 9.30pm, then kick start the weekend with the latest ringside action on WWE Raw. And later, Maaka Pohatu (from Wellington Paranormal) comes to Shake as late night horror host, Deadly Earnest, introducing a pick of the best horror movies on Deadly Earnest’s Friday Frights.

SATURDAY

Saturday wouldn’t be Saturday without Survivor 44 (at 6.30pm), filmed on location in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji and featuring 18 new players divided into three tribes: Ratu, Soka and Tika. Among the contestants is former Seattle Seahawks fullback Brandon Cottom.

At 7.30pm we’ll be saying goodbye to Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and all their friends as the final round of Riverdale is about to begin.

And at 8.30pm it’s time to laugh along with Saturday Night Comedy (a selection of comedy movies on a Saturday night). Titles include Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Bad Teacher, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad and Ted.

Followed by more ringside action on WWE NXT.

PTV SPORT ON SHAKE

Shake’s regular programming, as listed above, may be pre-empted by exclusive free-to-air coverage of the NZ Breakers (NBL) and the NZ Warriors (NRL) games. If the Breakers or the Warriors play in New Zealand then it is intended that their home game would be televised ‘live and free’. If not, the channel would carry full delayed coverage.

PTV+ Premium ($19.99 per month + extra $20 for live and on-demand sport) and PTV Sport Select (a linear television narrowcasting service for pubs, clubs, TAB outlets and other commercial outlets) offer live coverage of all NBL and NRL games where appropriate.

@Damo Here is a mock schedule for the three PTV Network channels (PTV, Shake and GEM) in the week beginning Monday 6 March 2023. (Programmes may be subject to change without notice.)

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2023 ON PTV NETWORK

@foxyrover @Medianext.MX @Trains_and_Sports @Damo @NuStraya In real life, Sky Television owns the New Zealand broadcast rights to Rugby World Cup 2023 (9 September - 29 October 2023) but I have a question to ask.

What if PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) incorporated the best of Sky and covered the Rugby World Cup this year?

All 48 Rugby World Cup 2023 matches would be ‘live and free’ across two PTV Network channels, PTV and Bold, and would also be available as world feeds on PTV+ Premium.

Every New Zealand match at the pool phase and knock out phase of Rugby World Cup 2023 (including the quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze final and final) would be broadcast on PTV. The remaining 36 matches (excluding New Zealand) at the pool phase would be broadcast on Bold.

I have here a list of common questions, as shown below.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What matches will I be able to watch on Freeview?
All 48 matches will be broadcast ‘live and free’ across PTV and Bold. Our main channel, PTV, will have live coverage of all New Zealand pool matches, the quarterfinal, the semifinals, the bronze final and the final. PTV’s sister channel, Bold, will have live coverage of the remaining 36 pool matches (excluding New Zealand). See “Match Schedule” below.

How do I watch Rugby World Cup 2023 on Freeview?
PTV and Bold are available free-to-air nationwide on the Freeview platform (UHF, satellite or live streaming). If you normally watch us through a traditional broadcast (using a Freeview-approved TV/set-top box connected to a UHF aerial or satellite dish), or if you’re streaming any of those channels via the Freeview Streaming TV app, you should be good to go.

Please note that the Rugby World Cup 2023 broadcasts, via PTV and Bold, are exclusive to Freeview (including the Freeview Streaming TV app). This means we won’t be streaming or making matches available on PTV+ as a free service.

To stream all 48 Rugby World Cup 2023 matches and other major sporting events live and on demand, you must subscribe to PTV+ Premium ($19.99 per month + an extra $20 for live and on-demand sports content).

Will you show replays?
Yes, both PTV and Bold will replay all matches during the daytime. We’ll release details closer to the time of the tournament. However, to stream replays you must subscribe to PTV+ Premium ($19.99 per month + an extra $20 for live and on-demand sports content).

Will you have a highlights programme?
Yes, we’ll have a weekly highlights programme in our Auckland studios, featuring all the must-see action from across the tournament.

Will you have a FAST channel on PTV+?
Yes, we’ll launch two dedicated FAST channels for availability on the PTV+ app and website, ptvplus.co.nz - “Rugby World Cup: Classics” and “Rugby World Cup: Action Replay”.

Will there be ads during a live game?
Yes, but the live broadcasts on PTV and Bold will offer uninterrupted game time viewing. Ads will screen before the game begins, during half time and after the final whistle - we won’t be breaking into live game time or during game stoppages and extra time. And we won’t be holding back live coverage to accommodate ad breaks.

Will there be ads during replays?
Yes, the replays on PTV and Bold will have regular ad breaks throughout. If you subscribe to PTV+ Premium and add an extra $20 to your subscription, the replays will be 100% ad free and offering you uninterrupted catch-up viewing.

Will there be live captioning available?
Live captions will be available across PTV and Bold.

I am a fluent Māori speaker or language learner, will there be Māori commentary available?
Yes. PTV’s coverage of all New Zealand pool matches, the quarterfinal, the semifinals, the bronze final and the final will carry live commentary in te reo Māori. A team of Māori commentators will be announced in due course. However, Māori commentary will not be available during Bold’s live broadcasts or replays across PTV and Bold.

MOSAIC CHANNEL UPDATE

Just given PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) Mosaic Channel a makeover.

If you normally have Freeview via a traditional broadcast (using a TV/set-top box connected to a UHF aerial or satellite dish, depending on where you are in the country), I created the PTV Mosaic Channel as an interactive, ‘multiview’ feature that lets you watch all 12 PTV Network channels on your TV at the same time.

In 2023, I had to give the PTV Mosaic Channel a revamp (similar to the now-defunct Sky News Multiview from Australia, as seen on Foxtel).

To access the PTV Mosaic Channel you’d have to press the red button on your remote, then use the arrow keys to navigate the channels. The red border indicates that the audio from one PTV Network channel is selected. To see the channel in full-screen view, press the OK, SELECT or ENTER button on your remote.

PTV Network New Zealand’s main channel, PTV, has six regional variants: Auckland, Hamilton (Waikato), Tauranga (Bay of Plenty), Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. One of the six regional variants, depending on where you are in NZ, are only available via Freeview’s UHF service. It covers about 86% of the country’s population.

Regional news programmes are broadcast five nights a week, Monday to Friday, at 5.30pm with a weekly round-up on Sundays at 12pm. Other than regional news programmes, regional opt-outs include the weekly rural news programme Grassroots Focus (on Saturday mornings), the weekly Crimestoppers-style programme Police Five and the lunchtime talk/magazine shows in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty (those based in Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua and Taupo). Insertion of local commercials and community notices is also available.

Because the regional variants are not available via satellite and an Auckland feed of PTV is carried, I created PTV Regional Television as a multiview feature (similar to the now-defunct Sky News Local from Australia) for viewers of Freeview’s satellite service. If your Freeview TV or set-top box is connected to a satellite dish, PTV Regional Television allows you to watch all six regional variants on your TV at the same time - just like the PTV Mosaic Channel.

To access PTV Regional Television you’d have to press the green button on your remote, then use the arrow keys to navigate the regional variants provided. The red border indicates that the audio from one regional variant is selected. To exit, press the green button again.

What do you think of the idea?

REWIND SCHEDULE 2023 - UPDATE

@greenpea @Damo Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I had had to make the decision to update a typical week’s schedule for Rewind, PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) general entertainment channel devoted to ‘the greatest television of all time’.

Key changes are:

  • Classic Coronation Street now screens at the new time of 8.30am every weekday;
  • The “Fun and Games” block (Card Sharks, Love Connection, Press Your Luck, Supermarket Sweep and The Price Is Right: The Barker Era) moves to the later time of 9am every weekday;
  • Iconic Australian soap Sons and Daughters is added and screens at 2pm every weekday, followed by A Country Practice at 2.30pm;
  • British game show Give Us a Clue moves to the earlier timeslot of 6pm every weeknight, followed by Strike It Lucky at 6.30pm;
  • Classic episodes of the international TV success story, Neighbours, are added and screen at 7pm every weeknight;
  • US action/drama Miami Vice is added and screens at 8.30pm every Tuesday;
  • The Bill Classics now screens at around 10.30pm every weeknight.

Bonanza would now be shown over the school and public holidays when Rewind’s “Lunchtime Drama” block (12-2pm weekdays) is off air, with the US sitcoms Barney Miller and One Day at a Time to follow until regular programming continues with Sons and Daughters at 2pm.

As I said earlier, many of the content seen on Rewind - classic dramas, classic comedies, classic entertainment and classic children’s programmes from television’s golden age - is digitally remastered and in HD. This offers all Kiwis a brilliant viewing experience.

AUSTRALIAN SOAPS

The updated schedule features the addition of three Australian soaps: Sons and Daughters, A Country Practice and Neighbours.

Sons and Daughters cast

The classic 80s soap, Sons and Daughters, screens five afternoons a week at 2pm and follows the dramatic lives of two Australian families, the Hamiltons and the Palmers. They were linked by the long-ago secret affair of David Palmer and Patricia Hamilton and the offspring of that affair, twins John Palmer and Angela Hamilton secretly adopted into the respective families. Later more wealth arrived in the form of the Morrell clan who managed to marry their way into the Hamilton family.

A Country Practice cast

A Country Practice is at 2.30pm and chronicles the highs and lows of the residents of Wandin Valley, an Australian rural country town. From the patients and staff at the hospital to the locals and their everyday lives - the award-winning A Country Practice was one of the most popular and much beloved primetime television programmes from across the Tasman.

The original Neighbours cast (1985)

And at 7pm every night from Monday to Friday, go back to where it all began with Neighbours, the iconic early evening Aussie soap sensation. From the very first episode in 1985 we are launched straight into the trials and tribulations of the friendly folk who, over the years, had lived down Ramsay Street; introducing for the first time the Ramsays, the Robinsons and the Clarkes.
