SAL’S NBL ON PTV NETWORK

@Michael_Eccles @Kathryn_Milin New Zealand is a sporting-mad country and basketball is one of the most popular sports. And we, at PTV Network New Zealand, are proud to have a commitment to the Sal’s NBL - the showcase for domestic basketball.

PTV Network’s youth-targeted general entertainment channel, Shake (already the free-to-air home of the NZ Breakers), will air two of the six games each week: Saturdays at 7.30pm and Sundays at 3pm, both of which will be ‘live and free’. Huw Beynon, general manager of the NBL, will introduce Shake’s coverage and the commentators will include Andrew Mulligan and Casey Frank.

Both free-to-air games will be replayed at breakfast time, i.e. Sundays at 7.15am and Mondays at 7am, taking us right up to normal transmission (at 9am).

The Sal’s NBL Grand Final will be exclusively live on Shake.

For subscribers to PTV Sport+, viewers can watch every Sal’s NBL game live and on-demand through PTV+, plus on-demand streaming of past NBL seasons. PTV Sport+ is available as monthly subscriptions ($29.99 per month), six monthly subscriptions ($179.99, billed every six months) or annual subscriptions ($359.99, billed every 12 months).

JAM SESSION

PTV Network’s exclusive coverage of the Sal’s NBL, across linear television and online, will be complemented by a new, weekly show with a particular focus on basketball - Jam Session.

Fronted by Brook Ruscoe (ex-basketballer and Mai Morning Crew host) and Casey Frank, Jam Session will provide basketball fans with a half hour package of the best moments from the latest Sal’s NBL round, as well as the latest basketball news and information.

Although it will be pre-recorded, Jam Session will be available on ptvsport.co.nz as a live stream from 3.30pm every Tuesday, then broadcast on Shake at around 11pm that night (straight after Family Guy).

ANNOUNCEMENT

I have a very important announcement to make.

Before 1975 when Jennie Goodwin became New Zealand’s first regular female newsreader, news bulletins on our screens were read traditionally by men - Bill Toft, Philip Sherry and Dougal Stevenson, for instance.

And when Julian Mounter, an Englishman, joined TVNZ in 1986 as its CEO, double-headed presentation for the evening news was adopted. Judy Bailey and Neil Billington (later replaced by Richard Long) took over from Philip Sherry as co-anchors.

Today, everything has changed and the people who bring you the news on television have come and gone. With advice from my mum, May Te Pou, my dream television network - PTV Network New Zealand (Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Ltd) - is undergoing a complete overhaul.

The reason why the PTV News and Current Affairs teams change is to enable the on-air staff to focus strongly on female talent. This will be achieved by increasing the amount of female staff, especially journalists from within the newsroom and those who are new to my network, and will allow our male staff to be progressively reduced, although it is fictional. This will also reduce the risk of serious issues in the newsroom, and the news media itself, such as women’s discrimination and sexism.

I want to apologise to you all for your comments in which I received in the past. No hard feelings. And there’s more in the future.

Pretty good @PaddyTePou, but I think the Bubble schedule needs to not closedown at 7pm, as I think it is a bit too early. Maybe 9:30pm?

@TBoy Not at this stage. From my point of view, CBBC closes transmission at 7pm each evening to make way for the youth-oriented BBC Three, which was relaunched in the UK as a linear television channel earlier this year, and the closedown time for Bubble (7pm) applies to school nights, i.e. Monday to Thursday evenings during school term time, only.

I hope to extend Bubble’s transmission hours sometime in the future, so if you have any post-7pm ideas that will run until around 9.30pm, then please let me know.

There’s usually a family movie on at 7pm during the weekends and every night over the school holidays!

CHANGES TO NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

@Michael_Eccles @LiamP @Kathryn_Milin The post you are about to read is, as always, a mock press release.

PTV Network New Zealand today announced a number of changes to its News and Current Affairs line up from 4 July onwards.

Laura Tupou will make the move from Saturday mornings to weekday mornings by taking over as newsreader for Sunrise (6-8.30am Monday to Friday mornings) and anchor Early Sunrise (5.30-6am Monday to Friday mornings). Today FM’s Wilhelmina Shrimpton will read the half hourly news bulletins during Saturday Sunrise (7-9am Saturdays).

The Sunrise and Saturday Sunrise teams, including dedicated presenters for sport and weather, will remain unchanged.

A PTV Network spokesperson says: “Laura brings considerable experience to the job as our morning newsreader and with the welcome return of Wilhelmina to television we can look forward to a brand that will have a combined, consistent on-camera line-up and will only go from strength to strength.

Sunrise will be on air six days a week, Monday to Saturday, so that viewers can turn on and get the latest news, sport, weather, entertainment and current affairs at breakfast time. Ryan Bridge and Melissa Chan-Green will have weekdays covered, with Amanda Gillies and Matty McLean keeping viewers informed, entertained and engaged on Saturday mornings.”

Susie Nordqvist will read the PTV News bulletins at 11.30am and 4.30pm.

PTV National News will be relaunched as PTV News at 6pm with Mike McRoberts and Samantha Hayes taking over as co-anchors in a double headed format from 4 July. Andrew Gourdie will continue to read sport, with meteorologists Dan Corbett (transferred from TVNZ) and Philip Duncan (from WeatherWatch.co.nz) anchoring the weather.

Meanwhile, Jess Tyson steps aside to focus on other roles at PTV Network, although she will still continue in her role as a fill-in weather presenter.

The late news bulletin, Nightline, will also be relaunched as PTV Late News.

Sacha McNeil (from TVNZ’s Seven Sharp) will join Nightline’s Mitch McCann as co-anchors of the newly relaunched PTV Late News in the same double headed format as the 6pm bulletin. The late bulletin, however, will continue to feature the evening’s breaking stories, international news, interviews, current affairs investigations, a preview of the next day’s newspaper headlines and a detailed weather forecast - all rolled into a 45 minute package.

At the same time, PTV News at 8pm will transition from a live stream on ptvnews.co.nz to a live broadcast on GEM with changes to programming on GEM, such as Coronation Street, to be made (more details to follow). The 8pm bulletin will be produced five nights a week, Monday to Friday, and broadcast on that channel as a gap between the 6pm and late bulletins on PTV.

Janika ter Ellen will present weekend bulletins under the title PTV Weekend News (at 6pm and late nights), rather than the weekend editions of both PTV News at 6pm and PTV Late News respectively, with Jeff McTainsh reading sport (6pm only). Ravinder Hunia will continue in her role as an additional sports anchor.

The spokesperson says: “We can confirm that, due to overwhelming demand, Mike and Sam - well known from their days at 3 News and, later, Newshub - will be joining us as co-anchors in a format similar to that of Newshub’s (at 6pm).

“Sacha and Mitch will cover late nights and become backup anchors for the 6pm bulletin on PTV but, every two weeks, one of the two co-anchors for the late news will read the 8pm bulletin in a single newsreader format on GEM and the other will read evening newsbreaks on other channels. Janika is also an exceptional talent and will be perfect as our weekend anchor at 6pm and late nights.

“We wish Daniel Faitaua, Tom McRae and Wendy Petrie would be part of PTV Network’s News and Current Affairs team, however due to other commitments this is not possible at this stage. They are deservedly popular and professional members of the New Zealand news media and should their circumstances change we would welcome the opportunity to work with them again.”

PTV Newsroom - a series of 10-minute bulletins covering news, sport and weather - will be available on ptvnews.co.nz as live streams at 6.30am, 9.15am, 12.30pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 8.30pm and 11pm weekdays, and at 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 7pm and 11pm weekends. The PTV Newsroom team will also produce a PTV Weekend News bulletin for 10 minutes at around 8.30pm on GEM.

Newsreaders for PTV Newsroom will include Carly Flynn, Heather Keats, Jared McCulloch, Trudi Nelson, Karen Rutherford, Wilhelmina Shrimpton, Marama T-Pole, Lucy Warhurst and Alice Wilkins.

PTV Network’s Māori news service, Te Hēteri, will now be produced as two half hour bulletins and two short bulletins every day, five days a week, across three platforms (PTV, GEM and ptvnews.co.nz).

Oriini Kaipara will present the afternoon edition of Te Hēteri which will be broadcast live at 4pm on PTV, just before PTV News at 4.30pm, and repeated with English subtitles at 5.30pm on GEM. Peata Melbourne will present the evening edition which will be exclusive to ptvnews.co.nz as a live stream from 9pm, with a delayed broadcast (with subtitles) to follow just before closedown on PTV.

Piripi Taylor will present five-minute headline bulletins which will be available on ptvnews.co.nz as live streams from 10.30am and 2.30pm, and will serve as a backup anchor for the 4pm and 9pm bulletins.

@Michael_Eccles I have a what-if scenario for you.

What if Robert and Jeanette (from The Breeze Auckland) had returned to television and hosted a new, mid-morning magazine show on my dream network?

Hosted by Robert Rakete and Jeanette Thomas, I describe Mornings with Robert & Jeanette as a live-to-air, weekday entertainment/lifestyle show which combines editorial content - a mix of magazine-style features, celebrity interviews and competitions - with ‘in programme’ commercial opportunities, i.e. advertorial content.

Regular features on the programme include cooking with guest chefs, movie and book reviews, panel discussions, live music, fashion, exercise, parenting, craft, interior design, gardening, makeovers, nutrition and relationship advice.

Sunrise will finish at the earlier time of 8.30am to make way for Mornings with Robert & Jeanette, which replaces The Morning Break (from Christchurch) and broadcasts live from Auckland. It screens weekdays from 8.30-10am on PTV.

GEM 2 REJUVENATED

@Kathryn_Milin @Michael_Eccles @TBoy @TV3_NZ In Britain, there are many channels largely dedicated to replaying now-axed popular shows from the past, such as Agatha Christie’s Poirot, The Bill, London’s Burning and ‘classic’ EastEnders.

Last time, I created GEM 2 as an extension of PTV Network New Zealand’s ‘General Entertainment and Movie’ channel, GEM . I describe GEM 2 as a free nostalgia channel, i.e. a free-to-air equivalent of JONES! on Sky (in real life), with a unique schedule of classic soaps, dramas, comedies, miniseries and entertainment from local and international sources.

GEM 2 aims to celebrate heroic characters above all else and offers Kiwis an opportunity to relive the memories that mean so much to them, as well as celebrate a time when the world was a simpler place.

After weeks and weeks of thinking, I decided to give GEM 2 a bit of a rejuvenation.

CONTENT

GEM 2 will screen ‘classic episodes’ of Coronation Street (from 1982), Emmerdale (from 1989) and EastEnders (from episode one) in a weekday schedule that maximises choice for British soap fans. The on-air pattern will see the same episode of each soap repeated three times in a day, morning, afternoon and evening (e.g. Classic Coronation Street airs at 8am and is repeated at midday and 6.30pm; Classic Emmerdale at 8.30am, 12.30pm and 6pm; and Classic EastEnders at 9am, 1pm and around 10.30pm).

Half hour episodes of the much-loved British police drama The Bill (from 1988) will also be screened on GEM 2 in the same on-air pattern as the British soaps, i.e. weekdays at 9.35am and repeated at 1.35pm and around 11.05pm. Other weekday offerings will include Ironside, Kojak, Hill Street Blues, Matlock, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Happy Days.

Primetime on GEM 2 will be made up of classic American and British programming: Howards’ Way, Boon, Minder, Murder She Wrote, Moonlighting, Cagney & Lacey, Hi-de-Hi!, Keeping Up Appearances, Open All Hours, Butterflies, Ever Decreasing Circles, Diagnosis: Murder, Battlestar Galactica, Are You Being Served?, ‘Allo ‘Allo!, Bread, Bergerac and London’s Burning.

Late nights will feature Night Court, The Saint, It Takes a Thief, The Prisoner, The Mod Squad, Airwolf, The Sweeney, The Twilight Zone, The Young Ones, Dempsey and Makepeace, The Professionals, Tales of the Unexpected, Sapphire and Steel and The Gentle Touch.

Weekends will feature ALF, Mork & Mindy, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider, The A-Team, Wonder Woman, My Sister Sam, Head of the Class, Growing Pains, Who’s the Boss?, The Flintstones, Top Cat, Wacky Races, the Gerry Anderson franchise ( Stingray, Thunderbirds etc), The Big Valley, Laramie, Alias Smith and Jones, The Waltons, The Monkees, I Love Lucy, The Onedin Line, The Brothers, The Duchess of Duke Street and All Creatures Great and Small.

Thursday and Friday nights on GEM 2 , from 8.30pm, will play host to classic miniseries like The Thorn Birds, Shōgun, The Winds of War, North and South and Lonesome Dove to name just a few.

Saturday nights will become Kiwi treasure trove night and made up of classic homegrown television from the TVNZ archives and other New Zealand sources. The sitcom version of The Billy T James Show, That’s Country, McPhail and Gadsby and Gliding On are amongst them, with the 9.30pm slot being the home of light entertainment specials from TVNZ’s vaults.

CLOSEDOWN

GEM 2 broadcasts from 8am until late, seven days a week (see the schedule above for closedown times). Outside these hours, a customised test card will be shown and accompanied by an audio simulcast of Radio Dunedin, although those subjects are off-topic.

In real life, Radio Dunedin broadcasts on 1305AM, 106.7FM (central city) and 95.4FM (Mosgiel and surrounding areas), as well as streaming live on its website (radiodunedin.co.nz) and the rova app. The station was launched in late 1922, becoming the first radio station in New Zealand. It is also the fifth oldest station in the world (five weeks older than the BBC), according to the station’s website.

Radio Dunedin is part of MediaWorks, which operates several other stations including The Breeze. MediaWorks runs the station from 6am-6pm weekdays. Air time is leased outside these hours by the Otago Radio Association, which is made up of volunteer announcers.

The station is aimed primarily at the 50+ age bracket, with a community focus, local news, and playing music primarily from the 1960s to 1980s. It is rated number two for share of commercial radio listening in Dunedin in the Radio Audience Measurement Survey.

Speaking of the GEM 2 test card, it features a photo of one of my good friends from within the pinup community - Kate McAulay, otherwise known as Betty Bouffant (photo courtesy of The Fire Inside Photography in the Wairarapa). Based in Pukekohe, she works in out-of-home advertising by day but has been a freelance makeup artist since 2008 and taken part in pinup beauty pageants in recent years, like Miss Pinup New Zealand (2019), Miss Rebel Roundup (2020) and Miss Frankton Thunder (2021).

Kate is one of the 12 PTV Network Mascots, a Calendar Girl type initiative of PTV Network New Zealand and made up of former Miss Pinup New Zealand contestants - many of whom appear in test cards during closedown. In regard to marketing and promotions, they promote a wide range of services within the network and serve as brand mascots, pinup-style. There’s more information on the Beauty School Dropouts website; the Beauty School Dropouts are specialists in vintage and pinup-style hair and makeup.

Your feedback regarding the GEM 2 schedule will be welcome, as my brain may be overloaded.

PTV NETWORK MULTI-CHANNEL SCHEDULE FOR JULY 2022 - UPDATE (PART 1)

@Michael_Eccles @fournews @TBoy @McMuffinMan17 @Biscuit45 @Kathryn_Milin @fournews @charlie @2265MHZ @LiamP @TV3_NZ Here’s an update on the schedules in which I posted earlier.

I had to give the multi-channel schedules some tweaks by adding new programmes, moving existing programmes to new timeslots and removing some of which from the schedules, and extending transmission hours for both GEM 2 and Bubble.

BUBBLE

On free-to-air television, children’s normal viewing times usually run until 8.30pm (though times may differ during weekends and school holidays) and because Bubble is a free-to-air channel geared specifically for children, I chose 8.30pm as the closedown time on Monday to Thursday evenings (school term time only). Family movies will screen at 7pm during weekends and school holidays and Bubble will run through until the end of the movie (anywhere from 8.30pm to 9.15pm).

Bubble’s three flagship blocks - The Early Bird Show (Mon-Fri, 6-8.30am), After School (Mon-Thu, 3-6pm; Fri, 3-7pm) and Ya Hoo (now Saturdays from 7-11am) - will feature wraparound segments between programmes, which are produced locally. Each wraparound segment, similar to Britain’s CBBC, will include a mix of games, guests, competitions, giveaways and interactive elements, with birthday calls being featured on The Early Bird Show in the morning. During school holidays, The Early Bird Show will run from 7-10am and the After School block will become Free Time.

Bubble’s preschool block Baby Bubble (Mon-Fri, 5-6am & 8.30am-3pm; Sat-Sun, 5-7am) will feature local, five-minute wraparound segments covering songs, stories and games for preschoolers in a safe and educational environment. Each wraparound segment will lean towards the style of the former TVNZ Kidzone service (in real life) and usually screen on the half hour (e.g. 8.30am, 9am, 9.30am, 10am and so on) during the Baby Bubble block.

Karen’s House (a weekday preschool series - starring Karen O’Leary of Wellington Paranormal fame), Camilla & Friends (a weekday preschool series - similar to Here’s Humphrey, set in a jungle treehouse and starring Camilla the gorilla of What Now fame) and Moe & Friends (an animated spin-off from The Moe Show) will still feature.

During school holidays, Baby Bubble will run from 5-7am each morning.

GEM 2

GEM’s sister channel GEM 2 will now conclude transmission at 1am on Monday to Thursday nights, extending to 2am on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sundays, GEM 2’s closedown time will be 12.15am approx.

‘Classic episodes’ of Coronation Street (from 1982), Emmerdale (from 1989) and EastEnders (from episode one) can now be seen three times every weekday, as does the British police drama The Bill in its half hour format (from 1988). The same episode will be first shown in the morning and repeated in the afternoon and evening to offer a choice for viewers.

US sitcom Night Court will now screen at approx 11.35pm Monday to Thursday nights, and at approx 11.45pm on Sunday nights.

For insomniacs out there, Airwolf, The Sweeney and The Twilight Zone will move half an hour later on Friday nights (overnight Saturday) while a BBC comedy series, The Young Ones, has been added and will screen Saturday nights at 10.30pm with Dempsey and Makepeace, The Professionals, Tales of the Unexpected and Sapphire and Steel moving half an hour later.

THE VIDEO CLUB

PTV Network’s new short-form programme, The Video Club, is a music video slot (there are two versions, a 10 mins duration and an extended 15 mins duration) offering a randomly assorted selection of the latest and best video clips from New Zealand and around the world - many of which are drawn from the libraries of PTV Network’s 24 hour music television services, MAX and MAX 2. The programme will screen in 10 or 15 minute formats on Shake, GEM and Turbo at various times during the day.

NEW ZEALAND PROGRAMMES

New local programmes added to the schedule include:

  • Wonder Dogs: The new version of the original ‘canine Krypton Factor’ (PTV)
  • Face the Music: A quiz show in which contestants use their musical knowledge and their memory to put names to classic hits from rock and pop music (PTV)

  • Late Night Big Breakfast: The new version of the New Zealand comedy series, featuring live interviews, regular segments and sketch comedy which parody morning television chat shows (Shake)

That’s all for now - here’s a typical multi-channel schedule with some tweaks; this is divided into two parts.

More to come in Part 2.
