BREAKING NEWS!

PTV Network New Zealand is undergoing major changes to its existing news and current affairs programmes, although it is only a mock announcement. Watch this space for more details.

I don’t understand what that one is? It’s just the BBC News being replayed with an ABC bulletin in the middle?

The PTV News Channel would carry a live, international feed of the BBC News channel which provides audiences with comprehensive coverage of world news and impartial, in-depth analysis of global events - all of which are drawn on the resources of and delivered via satellite by BBC News.

BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten - with such BBC News presenters as George Alagiah, Fiona Bruce, Reeta Chakrabarti, Huw Edwards, Mishal Husain, Clive Myrie and Sophie Raworth - are being inserted (in lieu of the usual BBC News feed), although viewers in NZ would have to get used to the upside-down sense of time.

BBC News at Six beams in from London at 5am NZ time and BBC News at Ten, 9am NZ time. In that case, the 6pm and 10pm bulletins would be recorded off the satellite, re-edited and shown in NZ on Tuesday to Saturday (at the later times of 10am and 4pm respectively) rather than in the usual Monday to Friday evening slots they are geared to for British viewers.

The BBC’s own content (including the BBC News feed, BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten) would be supplemented with other content such as international news bulletins from ABC and CBS in the United States - e.g. CBS Evening News is shown at 1.30pm & 5.30pm daily and ABC World News Tonight at 2.30pm & 6.30pm daily with ABC Nightline at 11.30pm every Tuesday to Saturday - and live feeds of breaking news and press conferences from around NZ via the PTV News newsroom.

What’s more, commercial spots for the PTV News Channel are built in. Equipment at the Warkworth satellite station would enable these spots to be replaced with programme trailers and promos as well as ‘filler’ content.

Yeah I know what the BBC News is and understand time differences, but this just seems like a rebroadcast of the BBC News channel with local ads? Why not craft a proper local news channel that’d serve your audience?

No plans at the moment.

The planned news bulletins, produced originally for the PTV News Channel, have moved to the PTV News website (ptvnews.co.nz) and mobile app as an online-only service and would be available as live streams during the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday (on the half hour): 5.00am - 8.30am
  • Monday to Friday (on the hour, every hour): 9.00am - 11.00pm
  • Weekends and public holidays (on the hour, every hour): 6.00am - 11.00pm

Each bulletin would be shorter and snappier, i.e. four minutes, and include national and international news stories in summary form along with a sports story and a national weather forecast.

Additional content, such as financial market updates and weather forecasts, would also appear online and as ‘filler’ content on the PTV News Channel.

As you would have heard and the winter season approaches, I have had to make the decision to change the name of Patrick Te Pou Enterprises Limited (trading as PTV Network New Zealand) to Patrick Te Pou Broadcasting Limited. However, the trade name remains unchanged.

The reason why I had to change the name is to branch into talk radio since the closure of the real-life Today FM, although plans within my dream television network are still emphasised.

the planned bulletins should be on linear too

So why would you not put them on your news channel?
Seems silly to waste time just rebroadcasting BBC world which is already available most places.

Yes you posted that above already.

Back to the news channel, what’s the rationale for moving local news off of the local news channel and onto a website?

To make the latest and most important stories from across NZ available on the PTV News website and mobile app at any time. Viewers come back during the day and night to see how a story develops.

Initially, the live news bulletins would be streamed live on the website and app during the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday (on the half hour): 5.00am - 8.30am
  • Monday to Friday (on the hour, every hour): 9.00am - 11.00pm
  • Weekends and public holidays (on the hour, every hour): 6.00am - 11.00pm

As a recap, each live bulletin would run for up to four minutes and include national and international news stories in summary form along with a sports story and a national weather forecast.

Once a BBC News bulletin finishes, the live bulletins would be replayed on the PTV News Channel at:

  • :25 & :55 past each hour from 5-8.30am weekdays
  • :25 past each hour from 9am-11pm weekdays and 6am-11pm weekends/public holidays (except at 10am & 4pm Tuesday to Saturday, where the live bulletins are replayed at :55 past due to the scheduling of both BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten).

These would be followed by 60 seconds of promos and trailers of programmes seen on other PTV Network channels.

Hrmm not on board with this idea tbh sorry, just dunno why people would wanna watch British or American news just to catch a local update at the end.

True. It’s great overnight filler content but not if it’s a direct relay.

SPORT FOR ALL

@Trains_and_Sports @greenpea @LiamP @Damo In relation to the real-life fact that TVNZ’s streaming platform, TVNZ+, becomes the new home of free-to-air sport from 1 July, the press release you are about to read is mock.

PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) today announced that all sporting coverage and sports content will be freely available to all New Zealanders via PTV+ from 1 September 2023.

SPORT ON PTV+

From 1 September 2023 PTV+ will offer a free sports hub housing all of PTV Network’s sports rights in one place.

Accessed via the PTV+ menu alongside TV, Movie and Documentary options, clicking on ‘Sport’ will take users through to a comprehensive streaming platform where fans will have the ability to pick and choose the events, matches and games they’d like to watch.

In addition to live coverage, PTV+ will host replays, highlights and extra content (including original talk and highlights shows from ptvsport.co.nz) on demand, plus dedicated FAST channels. These will ensure fans can engage with their favourite sports in the way that suit them best.

There will be a range of functionality available at launch, including the delivery of multiple live streams simultaneously and ‘watch from start’ or ‘watch live’ options. The user experience will continue to evolve over time.

While users will require an account to login, sport streaming will be free and supported by commercial advertising which will be placed mindfully to ensure minimal disruption to the live action. For subscribers of PTV+ Premium as a paid subscription service, all on-demand content (including replays and highlights, see below) will be 100% free of advertising but the live coverage will remain ad-supported.

SPORT ON BROADCAST TV

To ensure every sports supporter is covered, Rugby, Rugby League, Netball, Horse Racing, the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and other major events will also be available across PTV Network’s broadcast TV channels (PTV, Shake, Bold and Peach) and the PTV Pop Up channels. Its cross platform approach will give Kiwi viewers choice and control over how and where they watch.

Importantly, all sporting coverage and sports content will be free for fans - whether on PTV+ or the PTV Network channels.

A PTV Network spokesperson said: “At PTV Network New Zealand we can ensure that TV viewers, particularly sports fans, won’t miss out on the action. We’ll be delivering a huge selection of sport on our broadcast TV channels, including PTV, Shake, Bold and Peach.

“At the heart of this offering will be rugby: the All Blacks on PTV and the Black Ferns on Peach, along with the Super Rugby Pacific, Super Rugby Aupiki, Bunnings NPC, Farah Palmer Cup and the Heartland Championship.

“But there’s more! Shake will still be the free-to-air home of the NZ Warriors, the NZ Breakers, Sal’s NBL, Tauihi Basketball and the Bathurst 1000; and Peach will still play host to netball, including the Silver Ferns and the ANZ Premiership. Fan favourites and major events with mass appeal, including the State of Origin, the NRL Grand Final, the major golf tournaments, the FA Cup Final, Grand Slam tennis, the AFL Grand Final and the Olympic and Commonwealth Games will also play out on broadcast TV, with Bold and PTV Pop Up serving as the homes of additional free-to-air sport where necessary.

“Whether live or delayed, our goal is to bring sporting coverage to all New Zealanders however they choose to watch with us.”

Sports Saturday, Sports Sunday and Sports Arena (on Monday nights) will continue to screen across PTV and Bold and combine a blend of live action, highlights, round-ups and regular features (sports news, results, score updates, racing information and the top 10 ‘plays of the week’) in magazine-style formats.

CHANGES TO PTV+ PREMIUM, NO CHANGES TO PTV RINGSIDE & PTV SPORT SELECT

Until this time, all sporting coverage and sports content were available with PTV+ Premium, an advertising-free version of PTV+.

The paid subscription tier will still carry all on-demand content without commercial advertising and ‘PTV+ Premium exclusive’ content (including new series and box sets from HBO, Showtime, AMC and many others), plus the best of Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video through licensing agreements.

PTV+ Premium pricing will now be structured as follows:

  • Option 1: Same on-demand content as PTV+ without ads for only $9.99 per month.
  • Option 2: Same on-demand content as PTV+ without ads - plus exclusive access to ‘PTV+ Premium content’ (HBO, Showtime, AMC etc) - for only $19.99 per month.
  • Option 3: Same on-demand content as PTV+ without ads - plus exclusive access to ‘PTV+ Premium content’ (HBO, Showtime, AMC etc) and your choice of the best of Disney+, Netflix or Prime Video - for only $29.99 per month.
  • Option 4: Same on-demand content as PTV+ without ads - plus exclusive access to ‘PTV+ Premium content’ (HBO, Showtime, AMC etc) and the best of Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video - for only $39.99 per month.

PTV Ringside and its pay-per-view events (including Boxing, UFC and WWE) will still be available to purchase before streaming on the PTV+ platform.

PTV Sport Select, as a linear television narrowcasting service, will still be shown in pubs, clubs, TAB stores and other commercial businesses nationwide, as does the PTV Ringside events and the TAB Trackside channels.

KIDS CONTENT ON THE MOVE TO PTV+

Below is a mock press release.

PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) is launching a new dedicated destination for kids on PTV+ with more content than ever before, across a range of titles appealing to both school age and preschool age tamariki.

Called PTV+ Kids, the new consolidated children’s offering will be available on PTV Network’s streaming platform, PTV+, and jam packed with over 1,000 hours of child-safe programming to watch live and on demand.

PTV+ Kids will feature a library of over 150 titles, including brand new programmes dropping monthly on the service, and cover an array of genres such as animation, live action, comedies, dramas, entertainment, factuals and sport. The content will be sourced from a broad spectrum of production and distribution studios worldwide, including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and CBBC to name only a few.

New Zealand-made programmes, with thanks to funding from NZ On Air where possible, will play an integral role in the PTV+ Kids line-up.

As a consequence of this new streaming approach, and responding to the changing ways tamariki and their parents are increasingly accessing content, Bubble will cease to exist as a broadcast TV channel. However, kids content on other PTV Network channels will still be available.

For example, Shake will offer kids content in the early mornings and afternoons and Shake Extra (an extension of the main Shake channel) will carry a block of commercial-free preschool content from 7am on a daily basis, running through to 3pm weekdays and 12pm weekends.

@OnAir @Leotv @TV3_NZ @TV4 @nztv Below is a updated version of the one I posted earlier.

Freeview is currently available by one of two types of television antenna (UHF aerial and satellite dish), plus the Freeview Streaming TV app.

Below is the Freeview channel line-up (channels 1-24) in real life.

Earlier this year the Te Reo channel was moved from channel 15 to channel 10 with Prime swapping places. Additionally, Prime +1 (a one-hour timeshift of Prime) was added and is currently available via satellite and on the Freeview Streaming TV app.

Now, here’s how the proposed Freeview channel line-up would look like if PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) becomes a reality and incorporates the best of Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery NZ as separate, real-life companies.

Although the image is only a mock design, Three, Bravo, Prime, eden, Rush, HGTV and one-hour timeshifts (for Three, Bravo, Prime and eden) would be replaced with a brand new set of linear television channels under the PTV Network New Zealand banner. The channels would be available free-to-air nationwide via Freeview and in HD via UHF and the Freeview Streaming TV app, offering all Kiwis a brilliant viewing experience.

There are 12 permanent linear channels and each of which would have its own programme format - i.e. a full service channel (PTV), six general entertainment channels (Shake, Shake Extra, GEM, Bold, Peach and Rewind), two lifestyle channels (MAX and MAX 2), two 24 hour music channels (MAX and MAX 2) and a 24 hour news channel (the PTV News Channel - in association with the BBC and the American ABC and CBS networks) - so that viewers get to make the choice on which one to watch.

These would be located on channels 3-5, 8-10, 13-15 and 18-20.

In addition, there are three temporary or pop-up channels (PTV Pop Up 1-3) which are used mainly for sport (a mix of live and delayed coverage, full replays and highlights) where possible. PTV Pop Up, on channels 21-23, would only be available via UHF and on the Freeview Streaming TV app.

Freeview viewers would also notice a change in channel numbering.

  • To make way for GEM, Whakaata Māori (Māori TV) moves from channel 5 to channel 7.
  • TVNZ 2 +1 moves from channel 7 to channel 12.
  • TVNZ DUKE +1 moves from channel 12 to channel 16.
  • To make way for Shake Extra, the Te Reo channel moves from channel 10 to channel 17.
  • To make way for the PTV News Channel, Al Jazeera moves from channel 20 to channel 24.

A NEW FORMAT FOR PTV

@NuStraya @SA_TV Below are the mock details in regard to PTV Network New Zealand’s main channel, PTV, and its revamped schedule from 31 July 2023.

PTV Network New Zealand’s main channel, PTV, opens transmission at the later time of 6am with Sunrise.

Sunrise’s companion programme, Early Sunrise, gets the chop, but PTV Network New Zealand is introducing a new text-based information service – watch this space for more details.

The diagram, as shown below, indicates that the existing Sunrise continues to run from 6-9am Monday to Friday and offer a blend of current affairs, interviews, information, entertainment and the latest news, sports and weather updates on the half hour (at 6am, 6.30am, 7am, 7.30am, 8am and 8.30am).

The first hour of Sunrise, from 6-7am, presents comprehensive coverage of overnight events along with the latest business news, live crosses to PTV Network’s Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch newsrooms and a summary of the morning’s newspapers. On Mondays and Fridays, there are segments reviewing the weekend’s sporting events and previewing the sport to come (at around 6.20am).

The second hour, from 7-8am, combines additional overnight news coverage with current affairs-style interviews and a daily round-up of showbiz gossip and entertainment news. “Your Money”, a twice weekly segment based around consumer insights and information, appears at around 7.40am every Tuesday and Thursday.

The third and final hour, from 8-9am, is presented in a magazine-style infotainment format and incorporates a mix of feature interviews, panel discussions, showbiz gossip, entertainment news, human interest items and coverage of lifestyle topics.

Sunrise ends with the news headlines at 9am, followed by daytime programming with newsbreaks at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm – see the diagrams below for examples.

Full-length (half hour) PTV News bulletins screen at noon and 4pm on weekdays – see the diagram below for an example of how the midday edition of PTV News is being produced in a new half hour format.

The midday bulletin begins with national and international news stories, wrapping up the morning’s events. After the first commercial break, part two of the bulletin includes a few more news stories, a business news summary, an update on the financial markets and sports news. The afternoon’s weather forecast is presented at the end of the second break and the bulletin ends with a recap on the main news headlines at lunchtime.

The same format, as outlined above, applies to the 4pm edition of PTV News.

PTV Network New Zealand’s daily Māori news programme, Te Hēteri, moves to the new timeslot of 5pm and continues to provide its viewers with the very latest in Māori news and issues, along with a Māori outlook of the important news of the day, in 100% te reo Māori. The bulletin, as shown in the diagram above, is divided into three segments: news (part one), sport (part two) and weather (part three), with a headline recap to finish off.

For the benefit of non-Māori speakers Te Hēteri is repeated with English subtitles on GEM at the new time of 6.30pm, on the PTV News Channel at the new time of 9.30pm and on PTV just after midnight.

PTV News at 6pm, PTV Network New Zealand’s main evening news bulletin, comprises 30 minutes of national and international news, sport and weather – see the diagram above.

Parts one and two, with a commercial break in between, cover the day’s national and international news stories and there is a business news summary and financial market update in part two. After the second commercial break, sports news and a national weather forecast are presented.

The national bulletin is followed at 6.30pm by regional news from Auckland (Look North), Hamilton (Waikato Today), Tauranga (Bay of Plenty Today), Hawke’s Bay (Look East), Palmerston North (Points West), Wellington (Spotlight), Christchurch (Mainland Today) and Dunedin (South Today). Each regional programme provides local communities with a concise 28 minute package of the day’s news, current affairs and magazine-style features, reflecting community life and people-to-people involvement. At around 6.58pm the regions hand back to the network for a short recap on the main news headlines and the national weather before PTV’s evening programming starts at 7pm.

For busy viewers, unable to watch the 6pm news, PTV News at 8pm allows them to catch up on the day’s national and international news, sport and weather and is presented by the same on-air team as the 6pm bulletin on PTV. It screens Monday to Friday at 8pm on GEM – see the diagram below.

Unlike the 6pm bulletin, part three of the 8pm bulletin includes an update on the day’s sport, the national weather and the headline recap before GEM’s regular programming resumes at 8.30pm.

PTV Network New Zealand’s late news and current affairs programme, Nightline, rounds off the day and screens at around 10.30pm – see the diagram below for an example of how a typical edition of Nightline is being produced in a 45 minute format.

To me, I describe the new version of Nightline as a serious current affairs examination of the important news of the day and a television equivalent of RNZ’s Checkpoint (in real life), rather than a relaxed news magazine (similar to the old Nightline from TV3/Three in real life). It aims to provide all New Zealanders with a deeper insight into the political and economic ramifications of the events that have happened today and that will likely to happen tomorrow.

Each edition of Nightline opens with a news update, wrapping up the day’s major news stories in NZ and previewing the international news day ahead as the Northern Hemisphere wakes up. After the first commercial break and right through until the end of the programme, Nightline offers a hard-hitting mix of current affairs investigations, background stories, studio interviews and overseas content via satellite to keep its viewers informed and up to speed. On Fridays, sports news and a preview of the sporting weekend are presented in part three (in place of the current affairs items/studio interviews).

At the end, Nightline closes with a final recap on the main news headlines for the day and tomorrow’s weather.

Below is PTV’s revised (and mock) weekday schedule from 31 July 2023:

  • 6.00am: Sunrise (includes News Updates at 6.00, 6.30, 7.00, 7.30, 8.00, 8.30, 9.00)
  • 9.00am: The Drew Barrymore Show (NEW TIMESLOT)

Not really sure you can do a minute by minute structure of a news bulletin to be honest, things change etc.

@SA_TV Just created a series of diagrams and each diagram represents the structure of the following:

  • a Sunrise format for three hours (6-9am);
  • a three-minute newsbreak, followed by two half hour programmes (one of which runs for 27 minutes);
  • a five-minute newsbreak, followed by an hour-long programme (which runs for 55 minutes);
  • half hour news bulletins (at midday/4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 8pm on weekdays, and at 5.30pm on weekends); and
  • a Nightline format for 45 minutes (10.30-11.15pm).

@greenpea What do you think of the diagrams I created in the earlier post? Although the schedule is only a mock, I had to give it a complete overhaul.
