Pirate Radio

On the GC for a day and there is a pirate on 101.7 very powerful had from Bundall to Harbour town and still going as I head north. Playing a mix of 80s to modern hits

That’s a big coverage area! Could well be coming from any of the high rises around Labrador or even Southport maybe?

Not sure, finally lost it about Hope Island Turnoff to the highway going north

Yesterday, I came across what appears to be a pirate near Bredbo, about 35 km north of Cooma, it was on 90.0, had some music on that I wasn’t familiar with, probably lasted for about 10 kms.

@dxnerd have you heard of that one?

Haven’t heard that one! I might get my Cooma correspondent onto it (or I might hunt it down myself on Saturday).

I did a quick trip to Bredbo to suss out that pirate. It’s definitely a pirate as you can tell from the clip! And yes, received roughly 10 km either side of town. Noise free in the town centre; looks to be using a cheap Chinese transmitter as there was a bit of junk down the low end of the band from it. It’s also a bit overdriven.

Thanks, I’m back in Canberra now, passed through Bombala and Bredbo and yes that pirate was on air again when I passed through:around 3pm this afternoon. Probably on 24/7.

I can’t hear it from the south facing hill at Bungendore, just too low powered. Interestingly though, you can hear 90.5 2MNO/t Cooma at the Bungendore spot but not in Bredbo.

The Bungendore site is basically line of sight to Michelago (you can see the Tinderry Peak) but not quite to Bredbo.

that and the explicit music is sure to bring him to attention much quicker then if he was clean and playing non offensive music

Yes and it’s also a silly frequency to choose being so close to 89.7 NewsRadio (though in Bredbo, 103.9 Canberra is still stronger).

This may have been on air a while as I’m not in the habit of DXing through Bredbo normally, simply because it’s too close to home (results not that different) and it’s also down in a valley.

There is a country music pirate in the southern Monaro on 87.6 and yes, I’ve checked the listings and nothing seems to match. It can be heard far and wide too. This is a crafty move as it appears to be an LPON at first blush; even I assumed an LPON.

I think the Sydney pirate has moved from 89.5 to 90.3 as I’m picking up similar sounding music to the previous broadcasts on 89.5 on 90.3. Also comes in strongest on my NW antenna like the previous 89.5 transmissions.

Recording off 90.3: Vocaroo | Online voice recorder

Doesn’t match with Radio Northern Beaches when I checked with the webstream.

It’s on air right now, but disappears without warning like the previous transmissions on 89.5.

A new pirate seemingly has appeared on 91.5. First noticed tonight, causing some pretty severe co channel interference to 5RM. It has been playing several songs on repeat, including various Christmas songs, some mild swearing in between and one Coldplay song. I even heard 30 seconds or so from the children’s movie The Polar Express in there.

That’s not the Polar Express, that’s South Park.

Could be one of those houses who does themselves up big time for Xmas and has a FM station that seems to be way over powered for what the intention was and for the legal requirements are?

Yes possibly a Christmas lights broadcast. I picked up one years ago that actually ID’d as ā€˜Banool Street FM’ and used 93.4 MHz. This was about 2 km from my location.

I got it clearly tonight. It’s definitely one of these houses with an extravagant display. I walked around the neighbourhood with the TEF and found it coming from the next block over, and yes it did indeed Cartman and his lovely voice. As well as a bit of Coldplay they did use a bit of The Polar Express in the loop right at the start, welcoming visitors to their display.

It had stereo but no RDS which is a pity.

Does those micro powered transmitters do RDS?

Perhaps not natively, but one member did get RDS working on an in car transmitter a couple of months ago, so it can be done using PC based software or via other means.

It looks like Whiz FM are back in Melbourne on 99.9 FM.
I’m yet to pick them up but they are brazenly running a poster ad campaign in the northern suburbs!
