Olympics Rights 2024-32 (Nine)

maybe an announcement will be made when NEC release their half-year results on 23 February 2023

Possibly thereā€™s been a issue of some sort (major or otherwise). Youā€™d think they would have wanted to spruik it in their AO final coverage.

Iā€™m sure they will next summer, with Olympic rings watermark and all (like Seven) and throughout 2024 including (e.g.) Married and NRL, Wimbledon, etc. But yes, considering all but confirmed by media and acknowledged by Seven and 10 too, youā€™d think at least a deal confirmation wouldā€™ve taken place by now and teaser/mention during this summer.

A case of buyerā€™s remorse, I expect. The delay could be because they are trying to renegotiate the terms with the IOC.

lol what a silly comment

Seven will only have cricket and AFL to promote the Olympics during 2023/24 unlike Nine where they have Grand Slam Tennis, Australian Open series and State of Origin

Yeah and its a doozy, they havenā€™t reached an agreement yet.

People went off half-cocked when Seven withdrew assuming that Nine had it. That might be what transpires in the fullness of time though

If it isnā€™t signed why did Nine mention they won the Olympics on the Today Show then?

On that morning it seemed pretty unambiguous.

Must be a mistake on Christmas Eve last year. No formal agreement has been made between Nine and the IOC

Given that the lead story on the IOC web site at the moment is the death of Sydney 2000 organising committee vice-pres (among other things) Phil Coles over the weekend - something that, as an honorary IOC member, they are flying the Olympic flag at half-mast for three days at IOC HQ - maybe there are reasons for delaying an Australian announcement, even if it is ready to make.

If there end up being problems, Iā€™m sure weā€™ll hear about it - because one of the other networks will be squealing as much as when Nine did when they announced themselves as preferred bidder a month ago. The business world often does not run on internet time. :man_shrugging:

Iā€™m also sure the IOC will be trying to get as much as they can from Nine in negotiations given the bidding basically ended up ā€œpassed inā€ compared to what they wanted.

Meanwhile, theyā€™ve announced a new pan-European deal with Discovery already this year - itā€™s pretty clear thereā€™s nothing to announce.

Youā€™re saying that as if AFL and cricket arenā€™t two of the biggest sports in Australia.

I can easily see how a producer saw fit to include it in a bulletin, especially given Nineā€™s newspapers were reporting it. Perhaps without getting the go-ahead to run it from ā€˜upstairsā€™.

7 appeared to not have spent as much for the Cricket. Could they have gone back to the IOC and offered more?

I think we would have read something in the paper, a leak, if there had been some change though?

Something is up. Agree.

There have been nothing on either the News Corp or Nine mastheads today. All quiet with no announcement made. We heard some noise on 23 December and the ā€œunofficialā€ announcement on Weekend Today before any formal announcement the day after.

So this is all speculation? Or actually a deal that is not signed yet?

Is this going to be the cricket rights thread for 2023? :eyes:

Looks like it all over again.

Today couldā€™ve seen a major announcement with Nine Entertainment Co. just a few weeks after the IOC awarded the rights in Europe.

This morningā€™s TVT programmer wrap with Nine says (from chief Hamish Turner): "the middle of the year [2023] will, as will be in 2024, very different for us, with 25 days of ā€¦ [Ashes]. :eyes: :man_shrugging:

Paris Olympics?
