NRL on Nine

ROUND 5

As the only team unbeaten after four rounds, the Melbourne Storm face the North Queensland Cowboys in enemy territory to make it five straight this week in NRL on Nine .

But before that, in Macca’s Thursday Night Footy tonight, LIVE at 7.30pm AEST, the Broncos meet the Tigers after both were defeated last week. While the Tigers lost to the Panthers in a golden point nailbiter, the Broncos were demolished by the Roosters.

Anthony Seibold’s men need a form reversal fast to hold off the naysayers, with the pressure on captain Darius Boyd and the young Broncos forward pack, especially with Tevita Pangai Jr and James Roberts out through suspension and injury respectively.

The Tigers – feeling hard done by after letting the Panthers out of jail – will look to five-eighth Josh Reynolds to provide more sparks and Mahe Fonua to terrorise the Broncos wingers.

The table-topping Storm face one of the toughest tests in the NRL, heading to Townsville to play the Cowboys on Friday Night Footy . The Storm’s close call against the gallant Bulldogs last week will give the out-of-form Cowboys some confidence. Dangerous winger Suliasi Vunivalu is out for Melbourne, but NSW winger Josh Addo-Carr returns on the other wing. Michael Morgan and Matt Scott have to right the ship if the Cowboys are to spring an upset.

On Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy , a super-confident Corey Norman will lead the Dragons against the Bulldogs, whose position on the ladder contradicts their form. Norman, who has hit two field goals to win two tight games, is taking pressure off halfback Ben Hunt, while Matt Dufty, now at fullback, adds potency to the Dragons attack.

The Bulldogs – despite being without playmaker Kieran Foran and big forward Dylan Napa due to injury – haven’t had their confidence dented. Young winger Jayden Okunbor has been a revelation, and Lachlan Lewis – a nephew of “The King”, Wally Lewis – is improving with every game. This shapes as a very tight contest.

Accidentally caught Nine’s coverage last night for the first time this season, and boy, are those new graphics ugly. I’ve seen American college lacrosse broadcasts have better looking graphics than Nine’s ugly, Helvetica-filled boxes.

Round 6

With four live games, including a re-match of the 2018 grand final, there is no better way for rugby league fans to enjoy the Easter long weekend than with NRL on Nine.

The action kicks off with the Cronulla Sharks taking on the Penrith Panthers on Macca’s Thursday Night Footy, with both teams battling for momentum after only two wins apiece to start the season. The Sharks are boosted with the return of their talisman Paul Gallen and hooker Wayde Egan.

Embattled Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will be drawing up a new playbook to get his team to fire. Viliame Kikau provided a spark against the Titans last week when the Panthers needed it, despite going down, and will be aiming up against a tough Sharks pack. Nathan Cleary has also looked dangerous at times as he searches for the consistency that made him an Origin player last year.

Good Friday Footy provides the traditional Easter duel between the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs. Though up and down this season, the Bulldogs have proven that on their day they can be lethal.

While Greg Inglis has retired, Cody Walker was outstanding for the Rabbitohs last round with four tries against the Warriors, and Adam Reynolds has kicked as many goals as anyone this season.

The Bulldogs must tighten up their defence, with Aiden Tolman, Corey Harawira-Naera and their other forwards needing to match the intensity of the Burgess brothers to have any chance of upsetting the Rabbbitohs.

VB Friday Night Footy features the biggest game of the season to date as the Roosters, the reigning premiers, travel to Melbourne for the grand final re-match. With the teams positioned first and second on the ladder, a big crowd is expected at AAMI Park as the Roosters look to inflict the first loss of the season on the Storm.

The premiers are without classy centre Joseph Manu due to suspension, but buoyed by the return of prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. It is likely to be a hostile reception for halfback Cooper Cronk, who returns to his old stomping ground in different colours.

Melbourne and their captain Cameron Smith will be keen for a measure of revenge. Winger Suliasu Vunivalu is back, while Jahrome Hughes has made the fullback position his own after superstar Billy Slater’s retirement and given the Storm a new facet to their potent attack.

On Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy, the surprise packet of the 2019 season, the third-placed Canberra Raiders, defend home turf against the Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos have failed to fire under new coach Anthony Seibold and there is increasing pressure on the halves pairing of Anthony Milford and Kodi Nikorima to turn their fortunes around.

Josh Papalii and Joseph Leilua have been spectacular for the Green Machine in recent weeks, and will look to continue their dynamic form at home and keep Canberra on their winning ways.

The scoreboard and clock at the bottom of the screen went kaput with about 9 minutes to go in tonight’s comeback win by the mighty Sharkies!

Which was made all the more frustrating in not knowing how long to go when Cronulla got within 2 points and then hit the front with about 3 minutes left. Felt like an eternity without that clock there.

I just checked highlights of Fox League’s coverage on Fox Sports website and its own scoreboard and clock were working in the last 9 minutes of the match. So it was only Nine which had the technical hitch.

ROUND 7

TWO SPECIAL ANZAC DAY FIXTURES HIGHLIGHT THE ACTION

Few games on the calendar pack the same kind of emotion as the ANZAC Day fixtures, and NRL on Nine maintains the tradition with two absorbing contests tomorrow.

Fresh from their amazing wins against Melbourne and Manly respectively, the Roosters meet the Dragons in the first game of ANZAC Day Footy , with both teams on a hot streak of form.

In a battle that is expected to fill the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Roosters will be on a high following their golden point win in the grand final rematch against the Storm, and looking for more heroics from Latrell Mitchell who makes his debut at five-eighth. He replaces Luke Keary who is being rested, while hooker Jake Friend returns from injury for the premiers.

The Dragons are making a habit of squeaking away with a win and won’t mind being the underdogs, given their 24-8 win over the Roosters last ANZAC Day. Halfback Ben Hunt is playing with the hunger to reclaim a spot in Origin this year, while prop James Graham will savour his battle with inspirational Roosters’ big bopper Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Macca’s Thursday Night Footy provides the second ANZAC Day encounter when the Storm and Warriors face off in Melbourne. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has been at his brilliant best for the Warriors, ripping defences apart with his footwork, while Tohu Harris, who played five seasons with the Storm, will relish the chance to take his old team on and lift the visitors to their third win of the season.

After their first loss of 2019 last week, Melbourne need stars Cameron Smith, Cameron Munster and fullback revelation Jahrome Hughes to put them back in the winners’ circle.

VB Friday Night Footy matches the struggling Panthers and the surging Rabbitohs. The Panthers, desperate for a win after an ordinary start to the season, are looking to their NSW Origin halves, James Maloney and Nathan Cleary, to light up their lacklustre attack.

South Sydney, powering along under master coach Wayne Bennett, sit equal top of the ladder, helped by the three rampaging Burgess brothers and outstanding lock forward Cameron Murray, whose showdown with the Panthers’ James Fisher-Harris will be a highlight.

On Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy, Blake Ferguson returns to a Parramatta side high on confidence as they meet the out-of-sorts Newcastle Knights. After piling on 51 points against the Tigers on Easter Monday the Eels have sent a warning to the rest of the competition, with Mitchell Moses now living up to his vaunted potential as a playmaker.

Embattled coach Nathan Brown has stayed loyal to the team embarrassed by the Titans, and their experienced players Mitchell Pearce, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and David Klemmer need to aim up big time in this must-win game for the Knights.

This week’s episode of Six Tackles with Gus podcast is also one not to be missed, as Phil Gould sits down with James Bracey, exclusively revealing the circumstances surrounding his decision to step away from his lucrative role with the Penrith Panthers.

ROUND 8

GRUDGE MATCH FOR THE AGES IS LIVE TONIGHT

The Broncos and Rabbitohs meet tonight in the grudge match of the year to start Round 8 of NRL on Nine .

After months of speculation last season, coaches Wayne Bennett and Anthony Seibold switched clubs in dramatic circumstances – and with plenty of bad blood still in the air between Brisbane and Souths, their clash in Macca’s Thursday Night Footy promises to be a beauty.

Both teams are coming off victories, and after a slow start to the season Broncos fans are hoping they are now back on the track to the top eight. In a major shake-up, halfback Kodi Nikorima is replaced by 18-year-old debutant Tom Dearden, who will be thrown straight into the deep end. He will need to shoulder the burden in directing the team so that five-eighth Anthony Milford is at his creative best as he was last week against the Sharks.

The Bunnies squeaked by the Panthers last week to stay equal top of the table and come into this game with a relatively unchanged squad. The key battle tonight lies in the forwards, with Damien Cook, George and Thomas Burgess and Cameron Murray in exceptional form for Souths, while the highly rated Broncos pack have had a subdued start to the season.

The Melbourne Storm, who survived a depleted Warriors attack last week, travel to Cronulla to take on the struggling Sharks in VB Friday Night Footy . Kyle Flanagan comes in for the Sharks to replace injured star Shaun Johnson, but they get a boost from returning Origin player, Josh Dugan.

The Storm add in-form forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona to the starting lineup. Cameron Smith continues to defy the laws of ageing, and young half Brodie Croft will be playing with confidence after kicking a field goal to sink the Warriors.

The Parramatta Eels’ rollercoaster season continues. After a destruction of the Tigers two weeks ago in their inaugural game at Bankwest Stadium, they fell to the struggling Knights last weekend. They return to Bankwest week to face the Dragons on Chemist Warehouse Sunday Footy , with the hopes that lightning could strike twice at the new venue.

Eels prop Daniel Alvaro returns from concussion to line up against the inspirational Dragons big man, James Graham. Mitchell Moses will be out to find the touch that had him cheered on by a monster home crowd against the Tigers, and his match-up with likely Queensland Origin starter Ben Hunt could be decisive.

Paul Vaughan continues to get better every season, a powerhouse in the Dragons pack alongside Tyson Frizell. They will test Parramatta as they thunder down the middle of the park.

Ebroadcast’s TV guide has Lego Masters encores in this timeslot

Something I just noticed, on 9Gem, they (during telecast) abruptly aired the Ken Sutcliffe “this has been a wwos presentation” ender (clearly done from Nine’s play-out) and went immediately to a movie. Around 9:48pm.

Does this happen every week? If so that is bloody terrible!

Even Seven air the entire AFL post game until very late on 7mate in Sydney and Brisbane

Yes, they aren’t airing the post-game this year after they’ve become ‘separate’ shows in their own right.

Agree that it’s a terrible move

What’s more terrible for viewers is that they’ve also blatantly stopped airing matches on the main channel in Melbourne when that local team is playing (when again Seven have already aired lots of main channel Swans and Lions AFL games on the main channel in Sydney and Brisbane day and night time so far this year)

They have lost faith in Victoria for the Storm, no Hd no post game piss poor effort from 9, I switch to the 9now app through Fetch to watch the post game coverage once 9Gem starts airing crap
