NRL on Nine

Yes, about 15 seconds after full time the screen faded to black with the 9 WWOS logo. The next shot was a quick pan in of The Footy Show audience, and Bec Maddern introducing the panel. (This was for Melbourne by the way and I imagine Adelaide would have been the same. Perth may have taken some of the post-game to delay The Footy Show’s start until 8.30 WST)

Maybe it’s time for Nine to get Matt Thompson full time.

what about anyone from the QLD cup coverage like Peter Psaltis or Ben Dobbin?

Lots of negative social media last night aimed at Ch 9.

Mainly towards the late start, commentators and style of presentation.

Many were dumbfounded by Ray Warren’s “Welcome to ANZ Stadium”.

I can see why Seven Sport won the Logie Award.

###ROUND 14

GRAND FINAL REMATCH TURNED TOP-OF-THE-TABLE CLASH

Nine’s Wide World of Sports brings viewers a colossal round of rugby league action starting tonight when the Sharks face their current foes, the Storm, in a match that has the potential to boil over once again.

It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. After meeting in last season’s Grand Final the two sides now find themselves at the top of the table at the halfway point of the 2017 competition but that’s where the similarities end with no love being lost in a spiteful clash earlier this year.

Additional to team comparisons are two men wearing different colours who are out to prove they belong in the maroon jersey of Queensland’s State of Origin side - two of the best entertainers in the game, Billy Slater and Valentine Holmes, who will be putting each other to the test.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “There is a genuine dislike between these two teams and bad blood which will make for great viewing, I can’t wait.”

“Both sides are packed with representative stars and with one of the most notable, Cooper Cronk, being ruled out, the Sharks go in as favourites - but never write off the Storm led by a well-rested Cameron Smith and their mastermind coach Craig Bellamy.

Fittler’s player to watch: “Andrew Fifita – he scored the match-winning try in the Grand Final and was unstoppable in Origin 1 last week. The Storm need to find a way to contain him or they could be hearing the Sharks’ faithful singing ‘up, up, Cronulla’ once again.”

On Friday Night Football, the Rabbitohs are out for revenge on the Broncos after a controversial Anthony Milford field goal in round 8 rubbed more salt into the wounds sustained in their challenging 2017 season.

Despite being at separate ends of the ladder, a close clash should play out with the Rabbitohs well prepared after a bye week and high on motivated to keep their season alive against a Broncos side welcoming their Origin stars back from representative duties.

In an unusual edition, Sunday Football between the Tigers and Roosters at Campbelltown sees Jason Taylor plotting the defeat of the club he was coaching at the start of the season, in his new assistant role at the Roosters.

On the field it will be another Roosters signing coming from the Tigers in James Tedesco who will be playing a central role when the superstar fullback sets out to halt the progress of his former coach.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that commentator Matt Thompson is at the centre of a police investigation after he allegedly crashed into a car at a childcare centre in Sydney’s north and fled on foot when he was confronted. It happened on June 1.

That’s thrown a monkey wrench into the works for Nine. If he is stood down to is the next caller. Ray Hadley mentioned on his radio show today that he is only available on Thrusday Nights cause of his contract with Macquarie Media

Seems like odd reasoning considering he used to do Friday nights and has done Sundays.

They really need more callers.

###STATE OF ORIGIN II
Wednesday 21 June at 7.30pm AEST

Two of the biggest names in the game are back, but it will it be enough to stop the NSW Blues attack when Queensland heroes Billy Slater and Johnathan Thurston return in State of Origin Game II – exclusively LIVE and FREE on Nine next Wednesday, June 21, at 7.30pm.

The voice of rugby league, Ray “Rabs” Warren, will call the action from from ANZ Stadium in Sydney alongside Peter Sterling, Phil Gould and Paul Vautin.

James Bracey will host Nine’s exclusive LIVE and FREE State of Origin II coverage, flanked by rugby league Immortals Andrew “Joey” Johns and Wally “The King” Lewis, along with Origin legends Darren Lockyer and Brad Fittler.

Lockyer, a former Queensland captain, explained what the Maroons must do to stop a NSW series win and force a Game III decider on their home turf at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

“The first mission for the Maroons will be shutting down Andrew Fifita, but mentally as a unit they need to hang in the fight much longer than they did in the opening match. Thurston and Slater will bring an attacking mentality to the fore as well as a sense of calm by knowing what is required to win.

“The Queensland forward pack is mostly new to the arena but their great energy will account for what they lack in experience. Over the years Queensland have proven that they can perform when their backs are against the wall and this is the case now. Expect a much closer outcome this time around.”

##ROUND 15

RABBITOHS VS TITANS EELS VS DRAGONS

I> n the lead-up to State of Origin II, Nine’s Round 15 NRL coverage will show you the way with Rabbitohs vs Titans on Friday Night Football and the Eels vs Dragons on Sunday Afternoon Football.

LIVE and FREE from ANZ Stadium tonight, a desperate South Sydney Rabbitohs are out to revive their season against a Gold Coast Titans squad steered by their young-gun halfback, Ashley Taylor.

Nine’s rugby league expert, Brad Fittler, says: “Souths have stuck to their guns with their traditional style this year and so far it hasn’t paid dividends. For the sake of their own confidence they need to win tonight.

“Souths are at full strength but don’t count the Titans out. They have proven on a number of occasions they can beat anyone in the comp, but without their Origin stars it will be tough.”

Fittler’s player to watch: “Ashley Taylor – I like his instinctive style of play and I think he is a real star of the future, but his side needs him to deliver now. He is more than capable if his forwards can lay him a solid platform.”

On Sunday Afternoon Football, the fearsome forward packs of the Eels and Dragons will lock horns at ANZ Stadium where an aggressive match promises to play out.

The new Eels halves combination of Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses is yet to fire, but Sunday presents an opportunity for the creative big-name duo to show that the Eels are title contenders in 2017.

After a strong start to the season the Dragons have surprised all, but stumbled in the past month and are now out to prove they are still the real deal. Led by captain Gareth Widdop, the famous Red V has earned headlines for the performances of forwards Paul Vaughan and Jack De Belin who will have their work cut against the Eels enforcers Beau Scott, Manu Ma’u and Tepai Moeroa.

For some reason today’s InTrust Cup from Wynnum is in SD. Not enough HD trucks?

Availability shouldn’t be an issue since there are no other major sporting events on in SE QLD today eg. AFL, NRL,Super Rugby etc.

The score and clock has disappeared a few times for a couple of minutes during the State Of Origin.

This is from live play around the 36th minute

movie pop-up at half time.

While going through a recording from last night, I noticed that some native HD footage of this game was replayed on The NRL Footy Show:

I wonder why Nine Brisbane didn’t air it live(?) in native HD? Technical limitations with the OB truck they were using?

STATE OF ORIGIN – THE DECIDER

SPECIAL EVENT

State of Origin – The Decider is building as the biggest game of rugby league ever, and today Nine announced a special broadcast to spotlight this amazing event.

From 7.00pm on Wednesday, July 12, Wide World of Sports will produce a special one-hour pre-match show live from Suncorp Stadium – the spiritual home of State of Origin.

Nine commentator and NSW’s most successful coach, Phil Gould, says: “This will be the biggest game of rugby league ever. It will break all the records. The Blues smashed Queensland in Origin I before Queensland and their champions showed us why they are exactly that in Origin II. It all comes down to this – The Decider!”

Exclusively LIVE and FREE from 7.00pm on Nine, The Decider will give the audience unprecedented access to the players and coaches with expert analysis from rugby league Immortals Andrew “Joey” Johns and Wally “The King” Lewis, along with Origin legends Peter Sterling, Paul Vautin, Darren Lockyer, Brad Fittler and Phil Gould.

Speaking on the announcement, Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “The build-up to The Decider will be incredible. There are so many angles and stories to tell that we’ll struggle to get it all in – even with the extra half-hour.”

Nine’s Head of NRL, Ben Clark, said: “There’ll be a special tribute to Johnathan Thurston, and who knows how many of the Queensland champions are playing their last Origin? Is this the last chance to see them? Will NSW be able to beat them? Or will the great Queensland dynasty finish on top?”

Nine’s Director of Sports Sales, Sam Brennan, said: “Origin I and II were commercial sellouts. With The Decider looming as the biggest game of rugby league ever, it means there’ll be huge interest from brands to get involved in this unique opportunity.”
