Peter Jolly on the Triple Newcastle call tonight. Well deserved he’s worked hard, cutting his teeth calling nsw cup on community radio, calling local league for Bar TV and doing a bit with the NSWRL and NRL more recently.

I noticed that Melbourne-based AFL commentators Alister Nicholson and Corbin Middlemas have started commentating Storm home matches for ABC Radio this season, rather than having Sydney-based commentators flying south. Andrew Moore was here at AAMI Park for the season opener in March.

That’s interesting - thanks for that … I would be keen to listen to how they call the Storm games given they don’t seem to have much of a rugby league background.
Corbin called many NRL matches when he was based in Sydney a couple of years ago before moving to Melbourne.

Yes, I was production manager at Hawkesbury Radio. Peter travelled from Newcastle each week to Penrith from 2004-2011 to call NRL for us for free when we had the NRL rights. He was only 23 years old calling NRL. must be some record. I have watched him stick to this in recent years calling NRL Live streams, the odd game on Fox Sports, Country Rugby League and more recently NSW and QLD Cup. He is a natural and TRIPLE M Newcastle should get him to do more. He deserves to be given more opportunity because he has so much passion and drive to call Rugby League I wish him all the best. He will go far and lets hope its with Triple M. Go well.

It’s still a pity I think that 4RO Rockhampton now has no NRL coverage, whereas they used to have calls of near every game.

For the last few weeks it’s just been fake crowd noise which sounds very flat and really saps the energy out of the calls. There’s absolutely no indication from the bland noise as to what’s happening in the game, unlike the official fake crowd noises of the crowd-free sports which are made to react to events like a real crowd.
But I can’t understand why they’re doing it as the season started with real crowd noise, and the TV broadcasters provide an atmospheric noise + refs mic mix for the benefit of radio broadcasters who are calling off the box…and NRL Nation used to use it.

Cost.
It costs an absolute fortune to get the off air broadcast feed. We get it on Triple M but it does cost an arm and a leg.

Ahh yep, I can understand it would. But it creates a far better product by having that noise I believe because the energy just didn’t there when the noise isn’t there.
